Basketball fans know him as "The Hick from French Lick," but Larry Bird actually grew up in nearby West Baden Springs, just outside French Lick. Bird's Indiana State and Boston Celtics legacy made him one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
3. David Letterman (Indianapolis)
Before he hosted The Late Show, David Letterman was a radio DJ and weatherman in Indianapolis. His dry humor and Hoosier charm became a late-night TV staple for over 30 years.

4. John Mellencamp (Seymour)
John Mellencamp's songs about small-town life were autobiographical. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer grew up in Seymour, Indiana, and still reps his Hoosier roots.
5. Janet Jackson (Gary)
Like her brother Michael, Janet Jackson hails from Gary. She built her own powerhouse music career with chart-topping albums and award-winning performances.
6. James Dean (Fairmount)
An icon of rebellion, James Dean grew up in Fairmount, Indiana. His legacy lives on through his classic films and the annual James Dean Festival held in his hometown.

11. Gus Grissom (Mitchell)
One of NASA's original Mercury astronauts, Gus Grissom was a Mitchell, Indiana native. He flew two space missions before tragically dying in the Apollo 1 accident. His legacy lives on at the Grissom Memorial at Spring Mill State Park.
12. Miles Teller (Honorary mention in Bloomington)
