A Local’s Guide to South Bend & Mishawaka

Discover the best restaurants, attractions, and things to do in South Bend and Mishawaka. From PEGGS breakfast to Notre Dame campus and Studebaker Museum.

Northern Indiana shines bright thanks to South Bend and Mishawaka. Split by the scenic St. Joseph River, these communities blend local flavor and Hoosier hospitality with college-town energy. Between South Bend’s historic downtown and Notre Dame campus to Mishawaka’s picturesque trails, this area has become a can’t-miss stop for travelers.

The Get Indiana crew spent a few days eating, exploring, and soaking in all things South Bend and Mishawaka. Needless to say, this region exceeded expectations. From legendary restaurants to riverfront trails, here’s your guide to a weekend well spent.

Where to Stay in South Bend & Mishawaka

We stayed at Embassy Suites near the Notre Dame campus. The hotel features a modern design, spacious fitness center, relaxing indoor pool, and free breakfast.

The lobby was also filled with impressive artwork and signed memorabilia, all tied to Notre Dame. Whether you’re here for a game weekend, a weekend getaway, or just passing through, Embassy Suites makes you feel like you’re part of the Notre Dame tradition.

Restaurants and Bars in South Bend & Mishawaka

Breakfast at PEGGS (South Bend)

We started our morning at PEGGS, a local favorite serving up classic American breakfast and lunch dishes in downtown South Bend. We ordered the breakfast burrito, chicken and waffles, and a cinnamon roll to share, and every bite delivered.

Owner Peg Dalton stopped by our table to share the story behind the name: it’s a twist on her own, with “g” and “s” added to make sure “eggs” found their way in. Between the warm service and hearty food, it’s easy to see why PEGGS boasts over 1,500 Google reviews and a 4.4-star rating.

Lunch at Taqueria Chicago (South Bend)

When it comes to authentic Mexican food in South Bend, all eyes point toward Taqueria Chicago.

The carne asada tacos topped with cilantro, onion, and salsa verde are second to none. You can dine or take your order to go, making it a convenient spot for lunch.

Dinner and Drinks at The View Tavern (South Bend)

Established in 1954, The View Tavern has major Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs energy, and a menu full of classics.

Nate ordered The Becky, proudly listed as “The Best Burger in South Bend.” It’s topped with Swiss and American cheese, grilled onions, bacon, and BBQ sauce. Cheyne – a devoted Cubs fan – went for The Ryne Sandburger, named after the late Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg. It came stacked with cheddar cheese, grilled onions, and a fried egg. Both were home runs.

This neighborhood hangout is a go-to for locals, and on Notre Dame game days, it transforms into one of the liveliest spots in town.

Dinner at Crooked Ewe Brewery & Ale House (South Bend)

If you’re chasing great food with a view, Crooked Ewe Brewery & Ale House is the move. The gastro-brewery overlooks the St. Joseph River and sits right next to passing trains, a setting that pairs perfectly with a pint.

We ordered Poutine to share — Idaho potato fries piled high with house gravy, cheese curds, and brisket — and it was truly unbelievable. Between the family-friendly dining area, lively bar, and 4.5-star rating among 1,000+ Google reviews, Crooked Ewe checks every box.

Drinks at Corby’s Irish Pub (South Bend)

If you know South Bend, you know Corby’s Irish Pub. It’s a popular gathering place for students, alumni, locals, and even movie buffs. Why? Because scenes of “Rudy” were filmed here.

Shoutout to Gary who showed us around and gave us a behind-the-scenes peek, including an incredible view from the rooftop. Corby’s is nostalgic, energetic, and screams South Bend. The outdoor patio was lively with college students mingling and playing cornhole, and it’s only going to get bigger and better in the not-so-distant future.

Drinks and Bar Food at Manny’s Sports Bar (South Bend)

New to the late-night scene is Manny’s Sports Bar, which opened in summer 2025. It’s got everything you’d want for a game day hangout. TVs everywhere, pool tables, Pop-A-Shot basketball, and a big outdoor patio will make this spot a favorite.

Drinks at Salvation (South Bend)

If you’re into craft cocktails, Salvation should be at the top of your list. Housed in a former Salvation Army building, this newly opened lounge is led by bartender and award-winning mixologist Matt Lester.

The drinks are expertly made, the lighting is moody but inviting, and the upscale atmosphere adds to the experience. South Bend’s nightlife has ascended with the opening of Salvation.

Drinks on Eddy Street (South Bend)

Whether you like O’Rourke’s, Barrio or Brothers, the Eddy Street Commons area is buzzing with life on weekends. This is the hangout where locals, students, and visitors all converge for food, drinks, and energy that lasts after midnight.

Things to Do in South Bend & Mishawaka

The Studebaker National Museum & The History Museum (South Bend)

Start with a trip to the Studebaker National Museum, which tells the story of South Bend’s industrial heart. The exhibits trace the evolution of the Studebaker company from wagons and carriages to classic automobiles, and ultimately to its fall after 114 years in business.

Fun fact: The museum is home to the largest collection of U.S. Presidential carriages in existence. We spent over an hour there but could’ve easily stayed all afternoon.

Right next door, The History Museum is home to the Knute Rockne: Life & Legacy Exhibit, which runs through May 2026. It’s the largest public collection of Rockne artifacts in the world, chronicling his journey from player to legendary Notre Dame coach.

Rockne helped revolutionize football – famously popularizing the forward pass – and his coaching record of 105-12-5, with three national titles, makes him one of the best ever in college football history.

Explore Notre Dame’s Campus (South Bend)

A walk or jog through Notre Dame’s campus is an absolute must. Between the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and the iconic football stadium, it’s impossible not to feel the history here. The architecture is stunning, and the campus paths make for a perfect morning stroll.

Walk the Mishawaka Riverwalk (Mishawaka)

Over in Mishawaka, the Riverwalk is a gem. The circular trail system runs along both banks of the St. Joseph River, offering beautiful views, peaceful rest spots, and easy access to parks and downtown. It’s great for jogging, biking, and watching the river flow.

See the River Lights (South Bend)

When the sun goes down, head to Seitz Park for a look at the River Lights, an installation that illuminates the St. Joseph River with colorful displays. The lights change themes for holidays and special events, and locals gather along the water to fish, relax, and take in the view. It’s one of the most photo-worthy spots in town.

Play a Round at Warren Golf Course (Notre Dame)

For golfers, Warren Golf Course is a must-play. Designed by Coore and Crenshaw and opened in 1999, the course emulates the feel of early Irish and American layouts with rolling greens, deep bunkers (98 to be exact!), and a creek that comes into play often. Warren was the site of the 2019 U.S. Senior Open won by Steve Stricker.

Fusion Fest (South Bend)

The 3rd Annual Fusion Fest took place on Sept. 27-28, 2025. It’s a unique festival where visitors can essentially “travel the world” and shop at arts & crafts and food vendors from around the globe. The craziest food we tried on the menu? Oxtail.

Mark your calendar for Fusion Fest 2026.

Final Thoughts

South Bend and Mishawaka delivered in every way, from walking through automotive history at the Studebaker Museum, sipping cocktails in a repurposed Salvation Army building, and ending the night under the glow of the River Lights.

Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or a Notre Dame game day, South Bend and Mishawaka promise an unforgettable trip.
