The short version: When you sign up for a newsletter, use a form, vote on or suggest a place, or buy something in our store, we collect the details we need to do what you asked: usually your name and email, and for orders your shipping address and order details. Form submissions go to our team's private Slack channel. Stripe takes your payment, and we never see your card number. Beehiiv, our newsletter service, tells us how often you open and click our emails and which poll answers you pick. Some links in our newsletters go through our own short links (go.getindiana.com), which tell us which of those links you clicked (and, for some past issues, we also saved which links readers clicked). We keep those counts in a private reader database that only a few named people on our team can open, and we use them to decide what to write and to group readers by topic, such as trails or coffee. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand the site, and a Meta (Facebook) Pixel to measure and run advertising. Google Analytics may also use Google's advertising features (such as Google Signals) where they are switched on. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not give your email address or reader profile to advertisers or sponsors. You control analytics and advertising cookies through the "Your Privacy Choices" link in our footer, and we honor Global Privacy Control automatically. If you ask us to delete your information, we remove your reader profile, poll choices, link clicks, and interest groups and never rebuild them, whether or not you stay subscribed. Introduction

Get Indiana ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website getindiana.com and publishes the Get Indiana newsletters. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website, subscribe to our newsletters, buy from our store, or interact with our services. By using the site, you agree to the practices described here.

Information We Collect

Information you give us. When you subscribe to a newsletter, fill out a form (contact, partner inquiry, event promotion, Hoosier Home Connect, ice cream stockist, a content submission, a small town or nonprofit nomination, a podcast guest nomination, an athlete signup, or a place or event suggestion), or apply to write for us, you provide information such as your name, email address, phone number, the city you're interested in, your school, sport, social media handles, and age range (athlete signup; athletes under 18 also give a parent or guardian's name and email), and anything you include in a message or submission. If you give us another person's name or email, such as a contact at a nonprofit, please make sure they are fine with that.

Purchases. When you buy something in our store, we collect your name, email address, shipping address, and order details (what you ordered, quantities, amounts, and shipping cost). Stripe, our payment processor, collects and processes your payment details on Stripe's secure checkout page. We never see or store your card number. We keep the Stripe payment reference for your order so we can match payments to orders and handle refunds. If you are on our reader list, we also note on your reader profile that you bought from our store: whether you did, how many orders you placed, and the date of your latest order. We match this to your profile by your email address. We do not put what you ordered, amounts, or your shipping address on your profile. We do use order amounts in overall averages for the store, such as the average order, and nothing about amounts is stored on your profile. See "Reader Profiles and Interest Groups" below.

Advertising and sponsorships. If you pay us for advertising or a sponsorship, we may check the email on your payment against our reader list and use that only in overall counts and averages, such as how many sponsors read our newsletters, what sponsors pay on average, or whether sponsors also buy from our store, never as a note on your reader profile.

Directory votes and suggestions. On our directory you can vote to put a place on Nate's list and you can suggest a place or event. A vote can include an email address, and a suggestion can include the place or event name, town, website, a note, your name, and your email address. When you give an email address in either, we subscribe it to the main Get Indiana newsletter. When you vote, or suggest a place that is already listed, we also save a one-way scrambled code made from your IP address, so each person counts once a day. The code cannot be turned back into your IP address, and it is kept with the vote. Votes cast on our earlier "Nate's List" page, before the current directory, were stored with the email address and IP address used. We keep those older records in a private database and do not use them to add anyone to a newsletter. Email hello@getindiana.com to have yours deleted.

Information collected automatically. Like most websites, ours records basic technical and usage data when you visit: pages viewed, time on page, the link that referred you, your approximate location (country/region), UTM campaign parameters, your IP address, and general device and browser details. This comes through the analytics, hosting, and content delivery providers listed below, and where it is collected through non-essential cookies it is subject to your consent choice (see "Cookies and Tracking"). Our servers also use your IP address briefly to limit abuse and automated spam. When you read a news article and analytics is allowed under your cookie choice, our own system also records the article and a one-way code made from your IP address, browser details, and the date, using a secret key. The code changes every day and cannot be turned back into your IP address. We use it to count readers for "trending" lists, and we delete these records after 90 days.

Newsletter activity. Our newsletters are sent through Beehiiv. Each email contains a small image and tracked links, which let Beehiiv count when an email is opened and when a link is clicked. Beehiiv gives us, for each subscriber, running totals: how many newsletters were sent to you, how many you opened, and how many links you clicked. It also gives us the date of your latest open and click, which of our newsletters you receive, the date you signed up, and how you found us (for example the referring site or campaign tag on the signup link). These totals tell us how many issues you engage with. Beehiiv's running totals do not say which links you clicked. For some past issues we also asked Beehiiv which subscribers clicked a particular link, and from now on our own short links record it, as described under "Link clicks" below.

Link clicks. Some links in our newsletters go through our own short links at go.getindiana.com. Each short link carries a code that Beehiiv adds for your subscription. When a short link is opened, we record which link it was, the date and time, the request type (a normal visit or a preview check), and a rough class of the software that opened it (browser, email scanner, bot, or unknown). The click record does not include your IP address or the full browser name, and we set no cookie. Our host, Vercel, keeps standard server logs for go.getindiana.com as it does for the rest of our site, and those logs include IP addresses and may include the code in the link (see the service providers list below). We hold the code only until we match it to your subscription in our reader database, which happens within a night or so, and then we delete the code from the click. If we cannot match it after about a week, we delete it anyway. The code is not your email address. The short link then sends you straight to the page you wanted. We try to leave out clicks made by security scanners and bots. We label each link with the topics, places, businesses, teams, or events it is about, so we can see which subjects readers care about. We do not label links about civic or political topics. We screen each link with a list of civic words and an automated check, and a person reviews any link our word list flags. No screen is perfect. If you think we labeled a civic link, tell us at hello@getindiana.com and we will remove its labels. Clicks on every short link, including unlabeled ones, and past-issue click records stay in your profile for up to 24 months (counted from the click, or from the issue's send date for past-issue records), or until it is deleted, whichever comes first, but we do not use unlabeled links to place you in a group. For a set of past issues, we also saved a past-issue click record: which link a subscriber clicked and the date we sent that issue. It has no exact time. We got these records from Beehiiv, matched them to your Beehiiv subscriber ID, and deleted the downloaded files once they were loaded. We saved none of them for readers who had asked us to delete their information. We use clicks from the last 12 months to place you in a group. If you forward one of our newsletters, clicks on its short links count as yours.

Poll answers. When you answer a poll in one of our newsletters, Beehiiv records the choice you picked. We copy your choice, the poll it came from, and the date into our reader database. We do not copy written answers into our database.

Facts you tell us in polls. Some polls ask about you directly: the county you live in, whether you own, rent, or are looking to buy a home, and whether kids live at home with you. These polls are always optional. If you answer, we save that fact to your reader profile and use it to group readers, such as "lives in Hamilton County." Poll questions about kids are written to be light, and we turn your answer into one fact only: whether kids live at home with you, as a yes or a no. If your answer does not plainly say so, we save nothing. We do not ask for a child's name, age, school, or anything else about a child. We do not guess any of these facts from what you click.

Signup details. If you gave us a name, we store it. For the Hidden Gems download and the "Newsletter City" field, we also store whether you asked for the download and which city newsletter you follow.

Interest groups we create. From your poll answers, the short links you click and your past-issue click records, and your signup details we work out topics you appear to care about, such as rail trails, coffee shops, or a local team, and we place you in reader groups that match (our "Audiences"). We create these labels about you. See "Reader Profiles and Interest Groups" below.

We do not ask for and we do not store sensitive data such as health, religion, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, immigration status, or precise location.

How We Use Your Information

  • Deliver newsletters and email communications you have opted into
  • Take, fulfill, and support your store orders
  • Respond to inquiries, submissions, suggestions, and partnership or writer requests
  • Operate, secure, and improve the website, prevent abuse, and understand how it's used
  • Decide what to write, what to cover, and what to feature in our newsletters, based on what readers open, click, and vote for
  • Group readers by topic, and by the facts they tell us in polls, so we can see how many readers care about a subject or share a situation
  • Tell partners and sponsors how many readers click on a topic, as a rounded total with no names or emails. We round down to the nearest 10 and share nothing for groups under 50
  • Measure and run advertising for Get Indiana
  • Manage partnerships, sponsorships, and promoted content
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not use your information for purposes that are unrelated to these, unless you agree to it first.

Reader Profiles and Interest Groups

This section describes the reader database Get Indiana keeps for the newsletters.

  • What is in it. Your email address and name (if you gave one), which of our newsletters you receive and whether you are still subscribed, the totals and dates from Beehiiv described above, your poll choices and the facts you tell us in polls, the short links you clicked and when, the past-issue click records described above, the signup details above, a note of whether you bought from our store, how many orders you placed, and the date of your latest order (never what you ordered, amounts, or addresses), the interest groups we place you in, the domain of your email address (for example gmail.com), and a one-way code made from your email address (plus the older code if you changed your address). We use that code to match your Beehiiv record each night and to find your profile when you ask us to delete it, without opening the encrypted address. A note that you bought from our store can place you in a group of store buyers. We use that group to see how many readers buy from our store and how they read our newsletters.
  • What it is for. It helps us choose what to publish and see how many readers share an interest. It is a form of profiling, because software groups readers by interests using this data. We do not use it to make decisions about credit, housing, jobs, insurance, education, health care, or anything else with a legal or similarly serious effect on you. We do not create groups from opinions on civic or political questions.
  • Where it lives. It sits in a private database that Get Indiana's technology partner, Tuscan Agency, runs for us, on Supabase's servers. Tuscan Agency may use the data only to run this system for Get Indiana.
  • Who can see it. Only a few named members of the Get Indiana and Tuscan Agency team can sign in. Lists show a partly hidden version of each email address. Showing a full email address needs an extra permission, and every time someone shows one, the system logs it.
  • How it is protected. We encrypt the full email address and name before they are stored. The one-way code is made with a secret key we keep separately, cannot be turned back into your address, and is never sent outside our database. Connections use HTTPS. Access needs a team login. The system does not write readers' email addresses to its logs.
  • Who it is shared with. Only Get Indiana, Tuscan Agency, and the service providers listed below. We do not give or sell your email address or profile to advertisers, sponsors, or data brokers. We do not upload it to Meta, Google, or any other ad platform.
  • How long we keep it. While you stay subscribed to at least one of our newsletters. Once you have been off all our newsletters for 30 days, an automatic nightly job deletes your profile, your poll choices and facts, your store purchase note, your link clicks, and your interest groups. We also delete any individual short-link click or past-issue click record once it is 24 months old. If you ask us to delete your information, we remove the same things when we act on your request and we never rebuild them (see "Your Rights"). If you ask us to delete your information, we keep the one-way code of your email address described above, which is a string of characters made from the address that cannot be turned back into it, and your Beehiiv subscriber ID, which is the code in your newsletter links. We keep them so we do not add you back by mistake. After the automatic 30-day deletion we keep only a record that you unsubscribed, as a scrambled code, and only if you unsubscribed. If your subscription ended another way, such as a bounced address, we keep nothing. After a deletion request, a later click on a short link from your emails is counted in link totals but is never tied to you.

The Services We Use to Run the Site

We rely on a small set of third parties ("processors" or "service providers") that handle data on our behalf. Each one handles data only to provide its service to us, under its own terms and privacy commitments:

  • Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) — measures website traffic and usage. Sets analytics cookies, subject to your consent choice and Google Consent Mode. Google Analytics may use Google's advertising features (such as Google Signals) where they are switched on. Google Signals gives us aggregated reports about our audience's age range, gender and interests, and ad personalization can use site activity to show Google ads to people who visited. Our consent settings allow these features for visitors in the United States and other regions outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland until you opt out. The reports never identify you. You can turn these off through "Your Privacy Choices" in our footer, with Global Privacy Control, or in Google's Ad Settings.
  • Meta Pixel (Meta Platforms, Inc.) — advertising and measurement. We use the Meta Pixel to measure ad performance and to build and reach audiences on Facebook and Instagram. When the pixel is active, certain event and identifier data is shared with Meta for these purposes. See "Cookies and Tracking" for how the pixel is gated, and "Your Rights" and "Your Privacy Choices" for how to opt out.
  • Beehiiv (Beehiiv, Inc.) — delivers and manages our newsletters. Your name and email are stored with Beehiiv to send the newsletters you subscribe to. Beehiiv also records your opens, clicks, and poll answers, and we read those totals and answers back from Beehiiv. Beehiiv runs our newsletters for us, and we do not share your email with other newsletters or advertisers.
  • Stripe (Stripe, Inc.) — takes payment for store orders. You enter your card details on Stripe's secure checkout page. We never see your card number. Stripe also gives us your name, email, and shipping address for the order.
  • Make.com (Celonis SE) — our automation tool. It receives certain form submissions and routes them to our team and connected tools. It also receives each paid order (your name, email, shipping address, order details, and the Stripe payment reference) and passes the details to the tools we use to fulfill and ship your order.
  • Resend (Resend, Inc.) — delivers transactional emails (such as form confirmations and writer-application replies) to our inbox and to you.
  • Slack (Slack Technologies) — our team's messaging tool. Form submissions and place suggestions are posted to a private team channel so we can read and answer them.
  • Google Sheets and Gmail (Google LLC) — Make.com adds form submissions (contact, partner, event, writer application, athlete signup, and similar) to private Google Sheets and sends our team a notification through Gmail. Store orders are copied to a private Sheet for fulfillment. When you sign up for a newsletter for a city we have not launched yet, we also add your email, name, and city to a private Sheet so we can reach you when it launches.
  • Vercel (Vercel, Inc.) — hosts and serves the website and our team's reader tools, and keeps standard server and security logs, which include IP addresses. Vercel also measures page views and how fast pages load, without cookies. It receives the page address, the referring link, country, and device and browser details.
  • Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.) — delivers our images and video. It sees the IP address of each visitor who loads them.
  • Supabase / Tuscan CMS (Supabase, Inc.) — hosts the database and content management system behind the site's pages, and the encrypted reader database described above.
  • Tuscan Agency — the agency that builds and runs Get Indiana's website and technology on our behalf. Its team can reach the systems above only to do that work for us.
  • Meta Graph API (Meta Platforms, Inc.) — used only to display Get Indiana's own Instagram feed on the site. It pulls our public Instagram posts to show them here, and it does not collect information about you as a visitor.
  • Embedded players, maps and weather (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Instagram, TikTok, OpenFreeMap, Open-Meteo) — when a page loads one of these, that company receives your IP address and basic device details under its own privacy policy.
  • Anthropic (Anthropic PBC) — an AI model (Claude) suggests topics for the links in our newsletters and for poll answers. It sees link addresses, public page text, and poll wording. It never receives reader data.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or safety, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of the business.

What We Share, and With Whom

Here is every category of personal data we share, and who receives it:

  • Contact details and newsletter data (name, email, city, signup details, opens, clicks, poll choices, and what you write in a form): shared with our service providers Beehiiv, Make.com, Resend, Slack, Google (Sheets and Gmail), Supabase, and Vercel, and with Tuscan Agency, only so they can run our services.
  • Order data (name, email, shipping address, items ordered, amounts, shipping cost, payment reference): shared with Stripe, which processes the payment, with Make.com, which passes the details to the tools we use to fulfill and ship your order, and with Google (Sheets), where each order is copied to a private spreadsheet our team uses to fulfill it. Card details go only to Stripe.
  • Directory data (suggestion details, optional email, the scrambled vote code): shared with Supabase, which hosts it, with Slack, where suggestions are posted to a private team channel, and with Beehiiv when you give an email address.
  • Website and device data (pages viewed, cookie and device identifiers, IP address, approximate location, ad and event data): shared with Google (Analytics and its advertising features), with Vercel and Cloudflare, which deliver the site, with the companies behind embedded players, maps and weather when a page loads them, and, when the Meta Pixel is active, with Meta. Google and Meta are advertising and analytics companies, and this sharing is the targeted advertising described under "Your Privacy Choices."
  • Reader profiles and interest groups: shared with Get Indiana, Tuscan Agency, and the providers that host the database.

We do not sell personal data for money. We do not give partners or sponsors your email address or your profile.

Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies to keep the site working and to understand how it's used. These include:

  • Essential and consent cookies. First-party cookies that keep the site working and run the consent banner described below. tuscan_consent (functional, about one year) remembers your cookie choice so we don't ask again, and tuscan_geo (functional, about six hours) stores a rough region (the EEA, UK and Switzerland versus the rest of the world) so the banner shows the right options. Neither tracks you across other sites.
  • Analytics cookies. Google Analytics 4 cookies (for example _ga and _ga_*) help us understand site usage and engagement. These are non-essential and run subject to your consent choice.
  • Advertising cookies and pixel. The Meta Pixel is used for audience building, retargeting, and conversion measurement, and shares event data with Meta. Google Analytics may also use Google's advertising features (such as Google Signals) where they are switched on, which use site activity for audience reports and for showing ads. Both are gated behind your consent choice as described below.
  • Newsletter tracking. Our emails carry a small image and tracked links, run by Beehiiv, to count opens and clicks. You can stop the counting by unsubscribing, or by turning off image loading in your email app (this stops open counts only). Some links also pass through our own short links (go.getindiana.com). They record the click as described under "Link clicks" and set no cookie.

How we ask for consent

The site uses a geo-aware cookie-consent banner together with Google Consent Mode v2 to decide what runs:

  • EU, EEA, UK, and Switzerland: non-essential analytics, Google's advertising features, and the Meta Pixel stay off until you choose "Accept." Nothing non-essential runs before that opt-in.
  • United States and the rest of the world: we show a short notice. Analytics runs by default if we can tell you're in the United States or another region outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Our consent settings then allow Google's advertising features (where they are switched on), and you can decline at any time. The Meta Pixel is treated as opt-out. It loads by default in those regions and stops as soon as you decline or use the controls below. If we can't tell where you are, nothing runs until you choose.
  • Global Privacy Control (GPC): if your browser or extension sends a GPC signal, we honor it automatically as an opt-out. Analytics is not set, Google's advertising features stay off, and the Meta Pixel does not load. You don't have to do anything else.

Even when analytics is declined, Google Consent Mode still lets us see anonymous, modeled traffic totals without your individual activity. The Meta Pixel specifically is held off whenever you are in the EU/EEA/UK/Switzerland and have not yet accepted, whenever a GPC signal is present, and whenever you have declined or opted out.

How Long We Keep It

We keep newsletter sign-ups for as long as you stay subscribed. We keep order records as long as we need them for fulfillment, returns, taxes and accounting. We keep form submissions as long as we need them to handle your request and for a reasonable period after, then delete or archive them. A directory vote and its scrambled code stay with the vote. The older Nate's List vote records stay in a private database until you ask us to delete yours. Article-view records are deleted after 90 days. Reader profiles follow the rules in "Reader Profiles and Interest Groups." Analytics data follows each provider's retention settings. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see "Your Rights").

Data Security

The site runs over HTTPS, and we use reputable providers with their own security programs. We encrypt the full email address and name in our reader database, limit who can sign in to it, show a partly hidden version of each address in lists, and keep a log of who views full email addresses. We apply reasonable safeguards to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. That said, no method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a data breach affects your information, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.

Where Your Data Is Processed

We're based in the United States and our providers process data primarily in the US. If you contact us from outside the US, your information will be transferred to and processed in the US, where data protection laws may differ from those where you live.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal information. We honor the rights below for everyone who asks, in every state.

Everyone can:

  • Ask whether we are processing your personal information, and get a copy of it or a summary of it, in a format you can move to another service. This is free once every 12 months.
  • Correct inaccurate personal information that you gave us
  • Delete your personal information
  • Opt out of targeted advertising. For us, this means the Meta Pixel and Google's advertising features (see "Your Privacy Choices")
  • Opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information
  • Opt out of profiling used for decisions with legal or similarly significant effects. We make no such decisions
  • Use these rights without being treated worse for it

A parent or guardian can make these requests for a child.

If you're in the EU, UK, or a similar jurisdiction (GDPR-style), you can also:

  • Restrict or object to how we process your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

How to make a request

Email hello@getindiana.com, or use our contact page. Say which right you want to use. Send the email from the address you subscribed or ordered with, so we can confirm it is you. If we cannot confirm it, we may ask for a little more information. You do not need an account to make a request.

We answer within 45 days. If we need more time, we can extend that once by 45 days, and we will tell you why within the first 45 days. If we decline your request, we will tell you why within 45 days and explain how to appeal. Requests are free, up to once a year for each right. If a request is clearly unfounded, excessive, or repeated, we may charge a reasonable fee or decline, and we will say so.

Deleting your information

A deletion request removes your reader profile, your poll choices and facts, your store purchase note, your link clicks, and your interest groups from our reader database. We never rebuild them, whether or not you stay subscribed. We keep a one-way scrambled code of your email address and your Beehiiv subscriber ID so we do not add you back. A deletion request leaves your newsletter subscription as it is. You keep getting the newsletters you signed up for, and Beehiiv keeps counting opens and clicks for them.

If you ask us to delete everything, or to unsubscribe, we unsubscribe you and delete your Beehiiv record too. That is a separate choice from deleting your reader profile, so tell us which you want. Order records may stay where the law or our accounting rules require.

How to appeal

If we decline your request, you can appeal. Reply to our decision, or email hello@getindiana.com with the subject line "Appeal", and tell us what you want us to reconsider. This is the same way you made the request. We will write back within 60 days of receiving your appeal, tell you what we did or did not do, and explain why. If we deny your appeal, you can file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General at in.gov/attorneygeneral.

Your Privacy Choices

Here's how to control what happens on this site:

  • Your Privacy Choices. Use the "Your Privacy Choices" link in the footer to reopen the consent banner and accept or decline analytics and advertising cookies at any time. This is also where you opt out of targeted advertising from the Meta Pixel and Google's advertising features, wherever you live.
  • Global Privacy Control (GPC). If your browser or extension sends a GPC signal, we treat it as a valid opt-out of analytics and advertising cookies automatically. You don't have to do anything else.
  • Browser controls. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on to opt out of Analytics across all sites.
  • Newsletter. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out of marketing email at any time. We honor opt-outs within 10 business days at the latest, and we never charge a fee or ask for more than your email address.
  • Delete your information. Email hello@getindiana.com. See "Deleting your information" above for what is removed and what stays.

Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information. We do not sell your personal information for money. The Meta Pixel and Google's advertising features count as targeted advertising under Indiana and similar state laws. You can opt out using the "Your Privacy Choices" footer control, by sending a Global Privacy Control signal, or by disabling advertising cookies in your browser.

Children's Privacy

Our website is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and we do not knowingly place them in reader groups or show them targeted ads. Teenagers (13 to 17) read our sports and community coverage. Our athlete signup form (NIL) is open to high school athletes. It asks for name, email, phone, school, sport, position, graduation year, hometown, social media handles, and anything the athlete writes about themselves. We use it only to build the athlete's page and to contact them about it. The form asks for an age range. Athletes under 13 cannot sign up. Athletes 13 to 17 must give a parent or guardian's name and email and confirm that the parent agrees; we keep those details with the signup and email the parent or guardian to let them know, with a way to have the signup removed. We do not ask for a date of birth. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child gave us information, including an athlete signup, email hello@getindiana.com and we will delete it.

Third-Party Links

Our website may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those external sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. If a change is significant, we'll make a reasonable effort to flag it, for example with a note in our newsletters.
