Small Town Breakdown No. 26: Mitchell, Indiana
In 2025 we are highlighting 52 small towns across the state of Indiana in 52 weeks. We’re at the halfway point with our 26th small town breakdown of the year, and we’re going from one side of the state to the other – Whiting on Lake Michigan in Lake County to Mitchell in Lawrence County. Mitchell is 1 hour and 35 minutes south of Indianapolis, 50 minutes south of Bloomington, and 1 hour and 15 minutes northwest of Louisville.
The History of Lawrence County and Mitchell, Indiana
Lawrence County was first a portion of land from Knox and Harrison counties, land that later became Washington County and Orange County, and was finally founded as Lawrence County in 1818. It was named in honor of naval officer Captain James Lawrence, who coined the phrase “don’t give up the ship” in the War of 1812. Oddly enough, Lawrence County today is home to the third-largest Naval base in the world – the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division.
Lawrence County’s first county seat was Palestine, located on bluffs of the White River. However, a malaria outbreak swept through the town forcing the state legislature to move the seat to Bedford.
Mitchell was founded in 1853 as a railroad town, where “the Monon” – a north-south line from New Albany to Chicago – intersected with the east-west line of the Ohio and Mississippi Railway. Mitchell was named after West Point graduate and University of Cincinnati professor Ormsby Mitchel, who helped plat the town in exchange for naming it for him. Ormsby later became a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
As of the 2023 census Mitchell’s population was 3,942, making it the second-largest of three incorporated towns/cities in Lawrence County – smaller than Bedford (13,855) and bigger than Oolitic (1,135). Mitchell is the 152nd-largest city in Indiana.
Things to Do In or Near Mitchell, Indiana
For outdoor enthusiasts, Spring Mill State Park is located a short drive east of town and features caves, trails, and an 1860s pioneer village that showcases Indiana's natural and cultural heritage. The park was recommended by country-music artist Clayton Anderson on the Get IN podcast, too!
Inside the park is the Grissom Memorial that pays tribute to Virgil “Gus” Grissom, a Mitchell-born astronaut who later became the second American to fly in space. He died in the Apollo I accident. In Mitchell, you tour his boyhood home for free on Saturdays from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. during May through September, or visit the Gus Grissom Rocket Monument.
The downtown district in Mitchell is on the National Register of Historic Places, with dozens of historic buildings – many featuring limestone from the limestone-rich Lawrence County. The Mitchell Opera House is a treasure along with historic churches, banks, a library and various houses.
Also in Mitchell is Whispers Estate, an active haunted house that was rated as the fourth-most terrifying place in America by the Travel Channel in 2010. The house was built in 1894 and is home to roughly two dozen ghosts and spirits, many of whom were patients of the doctor who ran his medical practice on the first floor of the home for nearly 30 years. Many Google reviews written by those who have stepped inside the home speak of being touched, hearing whispers, and experiencing paranormal activity. Talk about spooky.

In a town founded because of railroads intersecting, you’ve got to check out the Railroad Cafe Lounge. They serve up an Indiana staple - a giant tenderloin sandwich – and they know how to entertain, too, with live music and comedy nights scheduled throughout the year.

Chase Briscoe to Race in the 2025 Brickyard 400
Chase Briscoe, who was born in Mitchell, is set to race in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 27.
Briscoe is currently in eighth place out of 44 drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series standings. He has never won the Brickyard on the 2.5-mile oval, but he did win the Xfinity Series race on the road course at IMS in 2020. Briscoe did say he’d rather win the Brickyard 400 than the Daytona 500, so yeah, we know who we’re cheering for later this month.
