📜 This Week in Indiana History 📜

United States Grand Prix Held at IMS (2000)

Globally, Formula 1 is the most watched motorsport on the planet, and in 2000, an F1 race was finally held at the most famous race track on the planet — Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A little background… for 11 years from 1950 to 1960, the Indy 500 was a points-paying race on the F1 calendar. F1 then raced at other circuits around the country until 1991, when low attendance forced them to not race in the U.S. for the next decade until they agreed to return to Indianapolis for the 2000 F1 season. An FIA Grade 1 track was built in the track’s infield, while still including parts of the iconic oval.

The race was won by one of the greatest racers in the history of the series, Michael Schumacher, who won by 12 seconds despite spinning on the final lap of the race. He eventually ended the season as the Formula 1 World Champion, his third championship out of an eventual seven total. Given the popularity that F1 has reached in recent years, we hope to see them return to the Racing Capital of the World here soon!

Century of Progress Homes

Along the Lake Michigan shoreline near Michigan City sits a group of homes that look like they belong in a science-fiction movie. Steve explains how reality TV is not scripted but heavily edited through storytelling choices, outlines the split between field production and post, and describes the night-one filming schedule and long edit timeline. He shares memorable entrances (including a helicopter on Emily Maynard's season), secrecy mishaps while filming, and reflections on notable leads like Ben Higgins, Chris Soules, and Sean Lowe.
