Today, October 7, is National Propane Day, and our friends at Keystone Cooperative are celebrating more than just clean energy. They’re putting the spotlight on Propane with Purpose, an initiative launched in August 2025 that is designed to help schools and students across Indiana by eliminating school lunch debt in rural communities.

Through Propane with Purpose, propane becomes much more than a reliable, low-emission energy source. For every propane delivery stop, Keystone contributes $0.50 toward alleviating school lunch debt in local schools. These everyday contributions will add up to big change, too, with $150,000 being given to schools to help families in need and ensure no child goes hungry at school.

What is Keystone Cooperative?

Keystone is a local, farmer-owned cooperative that plays a major role in producing the safest, most abundant food supply in the world.

Why does Propane with Purpose work?

  • It’s community driven! Simple, safe propane deliveries are turned into food security efforts.

  • There is real impact. Schools save money and reduce emissions with propane-powered buses, allowing them to reinvest in classrooms and student services.

  • It’s safe, local and reliable. Keystone’s propane team consists of neighbors and familiar faces that proudly serve rural communities and metro areas alike.

Propane Tips for Cooler Weather and the Winter

Colder weather can cause propane tank pressure to drop, so always keep propane tanks at least 30% full.

Schedule an inspection for your propane tank and appliances for wear and leaks before winter.

Keep a clear path to your propane tank for deliveries, especially after a snowfall. Speaking of snow, remove snow and ice from your tank, regulator and pipes carefully with your hands or a broom. Do not use a shovel or sharp object that could cause damage.

Clear appliance vents of snow and ice to prevent blockages that could cause carbon monoxide buildup.

Conserve energy by lowering your thermostat to a comfortable temperature, and close off rooms that do not need to be heated.

Make the Switch and Make a Difference with Keystone Cooperative

Need your propane tank refilled? Visit Keystone Cooperative or call 800-525-0272, and get 50 free gallons of propane. Remember for every propane delivery, $0.50 goes toward students and schools across rural Indiana that face school lunch insecurities.
