Week 5 of the 2026 Indiana high school football season is in the books. Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19, brought 151 games and 7,823 points, an average of 51.8 points per game. The widest margin belonged to Kokomo, which beat Anderson 78-0. Thirty games were shutouts, 24 were decided by eight points or fewer, two went to overtime, and six previously unbeaten teams lost. When the dust settled, 38 teams were still perfect.

The biggest blowouts
Kokomo's 78-0 win over Anderson was the widest margin of the week and pushed the Wildkats to 2-3. Anderson fell to 0-5. Right behind it were two teams sitting in the IFCA top five. Milan, No. 4 in Class 1A, beat Edinburgh 68-0, and Brownstown Central, No. 1 in Class 2A, went to North Harrison and won 72-6.

The offense had a night: Maconaquah 63, Peru 42
The highest-scoring game of the week was Maconaquah's 63-42 win at Peru, 105 combined points. Marcell Sims set a Maconaquah program record with 44 points. The senior ran 23 times for 183 yards and five touchdowns, caught two touchdown passes and added a two-point conversion, according to the Indiana Football Digest Insider. Maconaquah is 5-0.
Tipton's Zane Durham might have had the best line in the state. He carried 11 times for a program-record 348 yards and seven touchdowns, then caught a 54-yard pass for an eighth score in the Blue Devils' 69-14 win at Benton Central. He also made seven tackles and recovered a fumble. Elsewhere, Griffith (5-0) put up 70 at River Forest and Northeastern outlasted Centerville 56-42.
How the No. 1 teams handled Week 5
All six teams that entered the week at No. 1 in the IFCA poll won, and all six kept the top spot when the Week 5 poll came out Monday. Brownsburg's 49-10 win at Fishers was its 24th straight, the longest winning streak in the state. New Palestine had the hardest test of the group: it went to Pendleton Heights, then 4-0 and No. 10 in Class 5A, and won 38-21 behind junior Logan Parks, who ran for 283 yards and four touchdowns.

Upsets and unbeatens that fell
Seven teams ranked in the IFCA top 10 at kickoff lost in Week 5, and six of those losses came against another top-10 team. The biggest jolt came in the Region, where Andrean, No. 3 in Class 3A, went to Hobart and beat the 4-0 Brickies 28-10. Hobart had been No. 5 in Class 4A and slid to No. 9. The one ranked team to lose to an unranked opponent was Concord, No. 6 in Class 5A, which fell 28-11 at Northridge. That win moved Northridge to 5-0 and into the Class 4A top 10 at No. 10.
Lawrence North beat Carmel 28-21 in a matchup of Class 6A top-10 teams. Izayveon Moore ran 22 times for 165 yards, and sophomore Jannick Cross caught a 93-yard touchdown pass from Darian Prather. In Class 3A, No. 7 Indian Creek held off No. 8 Tri-West 19-12. Twin Lakes, No. 9 in Class 3A, beat Lafayette Central Catholic, No. 7 in Class 1A, 38-14, and Eastern (Greentown), No. 6 in Class 2A, won 21-6 at Carroll (Flora), No. 8 in Class 1A.

Six teams lost for the first time this season. Along with Pendleton Heights and Hobart, 4-0 Batesville ran into Class 4A No. 1 East Central and lost 38-6, Boonville fell 34-6 to Castle, Bremen lost 44-22 at Jimtown, and Gary West dropped a 46-36 shootout at Calumet.

Down the list, Fort Wayne Wayne beat Fort Wayne South 19-12 and ended a 15-game losing streak. Knox won 30-9 at John Glenn, and Oak Hill beat Alexandria 35-21.
Finishes worth replaying
Evansville Mater Dei, No. 5 in Class 3A, won 16-13 at Jasper when Louis Meredith kicked a 21-yard field goal with 2.5 seconds left. Goshen and Plymouth went to overtime tied 2-2, and Trenton Clark's 25-yard field goal won it for the RedHawks, 5-2. Mishawaka celebrated the 100th anniversary of Frank Steele Stadium by rallying past NorthWood 22-21.

A milestone night for coaches
Larry "Bud" Wright, Indiana's all-time winningest high school football coach, won his first game at Southwood, 33-12 at Wabash. It was career win No. 465, extending his own state record. Wright won his first 464 in 59 seasons at Sheridan before taking the Southwood job this year. Three more coaches hit round numbers on the same night:

Statewide team leaders through Week 5
Five weeks in, Northview owns the best average scoring margin in the state at 47.6 points a game, and Wes-Del leads the state in scoring at 55.6. Class 2A No. 1 Brownstown Central has the stingiest defense, allowing 4.0 points a game. Averages are from John Harrell's Indiana high school football data through Sept. 20.

IFCA top 10 after Week 5
The Indiana Football Coaches Association released its Week 5 poll on Monday, Sept. 21. Every No. 1 held. The biggest climbers were Plainfield, from No. 8 to No. 6 in Class 5A, and Springs Valley, from No. 10 to No. 7 in Class 1A. The biggest drops were Hobart, from No. 5 to No. 9 in Class 4A, and Concord, from No. 6 to No. 10 in Class 5A.
