Sectionals open this Friday, Oct. 23, and on the newest Get IN. Sports episode, Dom Miranda and Nate Spangle went through all 48 sectionals, class by class, and filled out full brackets before they hit record.

The Week 9 results that mattered

Center Grove 28, Bloomington South 14. Bloomington South led 14-0 and Center Grove answered with 28 straight, without its starting quarterback again. The hosts' read: Bloomington South proved it belongs at the top of a wide-open Class 5A, but you have to finish a heavyweight when you have him on the ropes.

Northridge 37, Warsaw 30. Northridge finished 9-0 and won the Northern Lakes Conference. Nate called this one before kickoff. Warsaw drops to 8-1.

Roncalli 28, East Central 10. A road win over the team that entered the week No. 1 in Class 4A. Roncalli's only losses are to Dwenger and Chatard, and it now has six straight wins. It set up the boldest claim of the episode: Class 4A is deeper and more talented than 5A this year, and it is not close.

Penn 38, South Bend St. Joseph 7. Penn finished 9-0 and won the Northern Indiana Conference, and per the show St. Joe is still looking for its first win over Penn since 1976.

Griffith 30, Wheeler 7. Griffith finished the regular season unbeaten and ended Wheeler's perfect run. The hosts have been saying for weeks that Griffith was flying under the radar.

Pioneer 35, North Judson 9. The 1A heavyweight game was less close than expected. The hosts expect these two to meet again in the tournament, and expect the rematch to be tighter.

Evansville Memorial 37, Castle 14. Castle had Memorial on the ropes in the first half before Memorial pulled away. Dom and Nate have taken to calling Memorial coach John Hurley the halftime wizard.

Eastern Hancock 41, Milan 27. A small-school nonconference game that finished Eastern Hancock's unbeaten regular season. Both hosts think Milan gets more out of a loss like this than a blowout win.

Also worth knowing: Mount Vernon (Fortville) beat Yorktown 48-41. Fremont beat Fairfield 46-21. Hammond Noll beat Boone Grove 31-27. North Decatur beat Franklin County 15-6. And three games came down to one point: Portage 20, LaPorte 19; Tipton 29, Western 28; South Bend Riley 18, Mishawaka Marian 17.

All 24 unbeaten teams

Before the season, Nate guessed 14 teams would finish the regular season unbeaten. Dom guessed 20. It ended at 24. Class 2A has the most with seven. Class 5A has none.

Class 1A sectional preview

Four unbeatens: Pioneer, Wes-Del, Riverton Parke and North Daviess. The coaches have Riverton Parke at No. 1 and Pioneer at No. 2. The hosts point out Pioneer just beat a top-five North Judson team, while Riverton Parke has not had a close game all year.

48North Daviess (9-0) vs. Tecumseh (8-1); West Washington (5-4) vs. Springs Valley (6-3); Crawford County (0-9) vs. Forest Park (4-5)North Daviess

Game of the week in 1A: Tecumseh (8-1) at North Daviess (9-0). Tecumseh's only loss is to 2A North Posey. Nate's transitive math: North Daviess beat Springs Valley 34-12 and Tecumseh beat Springs Valley 31-6. Also circle Madison-Grant at Caston, two 7-2 teams in the same first-round game, which is what an unseeded draw does.

Their 1A final four: both picked North Judson, Pioneer, Milan and Riverton Parke. Dom has Pioneer winning state over Milan. Nate has Milan, a 7-2 team that scheduled up all year and lost only to two bigger schools.

Class 2A sectional preview

Seven unbeatens, more than any other class: Eastside, Eastern (Greentown), Hagerstown, Eastern Hancock, Indianapolis Lutheran, South Putnam and Brownstown Central.

The best first-round game in the state: South Putnam (9-0) at Cascade (8-1), Friday at 7. South Putnam won 1A last year and moved up. Cascade won 3A last year and moved down. Now they share a 2A sectional. Cascade's only loss was Week 2 to unbeaten 4A Danville. South Putnam's last five reads like a misprint, including 63-0 over Cloverdale and 45-7 over 4A Northview. Both hosts still take South Putnam.

Sectional 36 is the other one to watch. Lapel's only loss came to Eastern Hancock, 39-27 on Oct. 2. Dom is going with his gut on Hagerstown: he was there weeks after the flood and talked with coach Scott Snodgrass, and he has Hagerstown going all the way to the state final. In 2A's south half, the hosts floated an upset run by South Spencer, whose game with North Posey went to overtime, a 56-55 North Posey win on Sept. 25.

Their 2A picks: Dom has Wheeler and Hagerstown on one side and South Putnam over Brownstown Central on the other, with South Putnam beating Hagerstown for the state title. Nate has Bremen against Lapel in one semi-state with Lapel winning, and South Putnam against North Posey in the other.

Class 3A sectional preview

Five unbeatens: Griffith, Bluffton, Maconaquah, Indian Creek and Evansville Memorial. Both hosts think only Memorial has fully asserted itself. Its wins over Mater Dei, Reitz (30-27), Floyd Central (34-28) and Castle are the best resume in the class.

Andrean vs. Griffith is the 3A game of the week and maybe the hardest first-round pick on the board. Andrean won the 2A title last year and moved up. Its only loss is to 6A Merrillville in Week 1. Both teams beat Lowell: Griffith 36-28 on Sept. 4, Andrean 21-7 last Friday. The winner has a real shot at the regional.

Also in 3A: Tippecanoe Valley beat Jimtown 17-15 on Sept. 25, and they meet again in round one. Bluffton beat Adams Central 36-28 on Oct. 9, so a sectional final rematch would be live. And Nate wants you to stop sleeping on Batesville, which lost to Lawrenceburg 35-20 on Sept. 25 and has never won a team state title in any sport, per the show.

Their 3A picks: Nate's final four is Andrean, Bluffton, Batesville and Evansville Memorial, with Memorial running the table. Dom's semi-states are Griffith vs. Maconaquah and Lawrenceburg vs. Evansville Memorial, with Memorial beating Maconaquah in what he expects to be a 100-point state final.

Class 4A sectional preview

Four unbeatens: Northridge, East Noble, Logansport and Danville. None of them is ranked No. 1. That is Fort Wayne Dwenger (8-1), whose only loss came to 6A Carroll (Fort Wayne). Several top-10 teams will be gone before regionals because they share sectionals.

Sectional 18 may be the toughest in the state. Northridge beat Mishawaka 38-35 on Oct. 2 and gets the rematch at home in round one. The winner probably draws South Bend St. Joseph. Sectional 19 is close behind: East Noble (No. 3) and Dwenger (No. 1) could meet in the final, with DeKalb, whose three losses came by a combined eight points per the show, in the way. In Sectional 21, Danville beat Lebanon 28-14 on Sept. 18 and gets them again. The hosts' warning: do not let Lebanon's 4-5 record fool you.

Their 4A picks are identical. Northridge over Lowell, Dwenger over Logansport, Chatard over Roncalli and East Central over Reitz in the regionals, then Chatard over Dwenger for the state title. Chatard beat Roncalli 42-14 on Sept. 4.

Class 5A sectional preview

No unbeatens. Only one first-round game: Greenfield-Central (2-7) at Mount Vernon (Fortville) (5-4), with the winner getting top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral. Everyone else opens Oct. 30. Both hosts called 5A chalky next to 4A.

Sectional 13 is loaded. New Palestine has won back-to-back state titles, per the show, and still has to go through this. Its three losses are to East Central, Roncalli and IMG Academy, and it beat Pendleton Heights 38-21 on Sept. 18. Cathedral beat Chatard 16-14 on Sept. 11. The hosts called this the most under-the-radar Cathedral team in recent memory.

Their 5A picks split at the end. Both have Warsaw in the state final. Dom has Cathedral winning it. Nate has Bloomington South, whose only losses are to Center Grove and Ohio's Ironton.

Class 6A sectional preview

Four unbeatens: Brownsburg, Warren Central, Crown Point and Penn. One first-round game, Franklin Central (3-6) at Southport (2-7), with the winner getting Decatur Central (8-1). Everyone else opens Oct. 30.

Crown Point beat Merrillville 23-14 on Sept. 4 and gets them again in its opener. Carmel lost to Westfield by four in the regular season and gets the rematch at Westfield. Fishers (0-9) plays Hamilton Southeastern in the Mudsock with its first-ever winless season on the line, per the show.

Their 6A picks: Penn over Crown Point, Carmel over Carroll, Brownsburg over Lawrence North and Warren Central over Center Grove in the regionals. That sets up Brownsburg vs. Warren Central at semi-state, and the bracket on air ends with Brownsburg beating Carmel for the state title. Brownsburg beat Westfield 38-14 on Sept. 25. Both hosts say Brownsburg is the champion until somebody proves otherwise.

Players Dom and Nate kept coming back to

These lines are regular-season stats as Dom and Nate read them on the episode.

  • Keenan Mowery-Shields, South Putnam: 116 tackles, 33 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He is the Ascend Football Player of the Regular Season, and the hosts made the case that a defender belongs in the Mr. Football conversation.
  • Ty Benton, South Putnam: 1,463 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on 112 carries, mostly in first halves. The hosts said Benton was the name listeners raised most after their Mr. Football candidates video.
  • Aiden Robinson, Maconaquah: about 3,000 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes and four interceptions. The hosts want him in the Mr. Football conversation now.
  • Gibson Eagle, Eastern (Greentown): 2,252 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and zero interceptions on 162 attempts, plus 12 rushing scores. Bently Hullinger caught 16 of those touchdowns.
  • Branden Sharpe, Brownsburg: about 112 receiving yards per game with 16 touchdowns. The hosts still have him as the Mr. Football leader.
  • Keyon Thomas, Warren Central: 1,537 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 166 carries.
