Thanks so much for coming on this journey with us. Let's get into it. Hey, welcome to Get Indiana. It's the Get In Sports podcast. Football in full swing. We talked about the Colts ad nauseium a week ago.

Training camp full swing. The season is closer and closer. IU Notre Dame Purdue. Oh my goodness. Everything is going on and we love it here at Get Inports. Be sure to be following at get in sports at Indiana Nate Spangle at DMiranda TV for all your coverage of pro college high school sports in the great state of Indiana.

Is Brownsburg going to make it a threep caramel Warren Central Center Grove all with legitimate chances to win a state championship in class 6A. Does Newal continue their dominance? They got IMG Academy coming to town this season. Who's going to win in 3A, 2A, 1A? We don't know. Hope springs eternal.

It is high school football season in the great state of Indiana. Be sure you're watching channel 13 as well. Friday mornings, we got you covered. Operation Football Sunrise Kickoff. We got the best 8 to 12 games in the state of Indiana at 11 o'clock on channel 13. We're going to be with you.

We're bringing you everything you need to know between here at Get In Sports and WTR. You have everything you need to know as far as high school football goes. But we're going to go back in the time machine here and talk about some Indiana Mr. Footballs in the great state of Indiana. Will Duncan, let's do some trivia. Let's do it, man.

So, I came up with a few questions to have Dom incorporate not only high school football, not only college football, but also the NFL. So, Dom, my first question to you is this. Can you name the six Mr. Footballs from Indiana that made it all the way to the NFL? Okay, let's think about this real quick, and I just was uh appraised of this uh not too long ago, but I'm going to go with a guy from Bloomington, Rex Gman. Rex Gman is correct.

from 1998, made his way to Florida, and then in a 2003 NFL draft, was a first round pick, 22nd overall to the Chicago Bears. Went to a Super Bowl. Yes, he did. Lost to the Indianapolis Colts, baby. Yes. So, there's one.

There's one. We got six. Yep. Grossman is the oldest. The next guys that you got, uh, next one is not until ' 06. Okay.

Zack Martin. Zack, did he win Mr. Football? Zack Martin is not on the list. No, Mr. football for the O lineman.

Come on. Quarterback award, they're telling me. Okay, let's think here. Who went to the league? Oh, okay. I'm going to go with a guy from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Jaylen Smith. Jaylen Smith is correct. In 2012, won Mr. Football, made it to Notre Dame, and in the 2016 NFL draft, was a second round pick to the Dallas Cowboys. Okay. Jaylen Smith was an animal.

He is on the coaching staff at uh Lures. I believe he went to Lurs. He went to Lurs. He did go to Lurs. Yeah. So I think he's on the coaching staff now.

I was talking to a guy from Fort Wayne at Colts training camp. Pretty sure he's on the coaching staff there now. Jaylen Smith, one of the best injuries caught up with them, but absolutely do. I think he's one of the best Indiana high school recruits ever. We talked about that. I believe he is the best recruit ever.

Okay, so there you go. Um he was absolutely unbelievable. All right, four more. Four more. We're off to a hot start. Rex Gman, Jaylen Smith.

Let's keep going here. There's there's some got to be some well-known ones here. Definitely. I would say uh a few recent guys. One guy was the year after Jaylen Smith and is probably the biggest name on this list, I would say. Okay.

Biggest name on this list, he would say. H Okay, I'm not going to ask for schools quite yet. I'm going to ask for positions. Okay, so 2006 was a running back, 2013 was a wide receiver, and then you have 2018 quarterback and 2020 running back. 2015 wide receiver 2013. 2013 wide receiver 2013.

Okay. Come on, Dom. Here we go. Um, running back's well known. Is that what you're telling me? No.

The receiver from 2013. Oh, okay. Okay. Here we go. Okay. Thank you.

Receiver got me. He's from Cathedral. He plays for the Washington Commanders. One of the very best in the league. That would be Terry McLaren. Scary Terry.

Scary Terry, baby. 2013 won Mr. Football. traveled all the way to Ohio State was a Buckeye and then in the 2019 draft was a third round pick to the Commanders. If you are a receiver and you're playing at Ohio State, you're pretty dang good and Terry McLaren is pretty dang good. All right, three for three.

We're feeling good about ourselves. 2015 is going to bother me. There is no 2015. So, no, you're totally good. 2006 running back, 2018 quarterback, 2020 running back. 2018 quarterback.

This is correct. 2018 quarterback. Come on, Dom. Quarterback. Not going to throw it at you, but I will say you should know this guy. Okay.

I mean, I should. That's why we're doing this. Um, okay. 2018 quarterback. H college will give it away. I don't want to I want that.

Yeah. You want to go high school? No. I I can get this. 2018. Come on.

Um, okay. Well, let me ask you this. Was he successful in the NFL? Uh, I believe he is still a current NFL player. He was a fourth round pick and was just drafted in 2025. Wait, time out.

Did Jay Cutler win Mr. Football? I don't see Jay Cutler on this list at all. Okay, so wow, the disrespect. Okay. Um, okay.

That was way prior, but I was just curious there. He's still in the league. Yes. Was just literally just drafted last year. He was I don't think this should give it away either. He was a fourthround pick in the 2025 draft to the Jaguars.

Okay, so the 2018 guy was actually listed as the wrong position. He is a linebacker and not a quarterback. He's a linebacker. How about this? You ready for this right now? Jack Kaiser.

There we go. He He did it all at Pioneer though, so that makes sense. I wonder I wonder I might actually do some research on this. Maybe he was a quarterback in high school and I didn't know. Well, I mean he he was everything Pioneer. So he now plays linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he went to Notre Dame and was just drafted in 2025.

So Jack Kaiser was the heartbeat of Notre Dame team who went to the national championship. Oh, by the way, talk about a small school kid, one A, one state, went to Notre Dame, now in the league. That guy epitomizes heart. All right. Jack Kaiser, huge fan right here of Jack Kaiser. Um, okay.

So we got Rex Gman, Jaylen Smith, Jack Kaiser, and Terry McLuren. Yep. You got two more. We got two more. Okay, we're rolling. Yes, we are.

We have 06 and 2020, both running backs. Um, I will say the 2020 guy is much easier to get. He is still, I believe, a current NFL player. Oh, he's the pride of Center Grove. He has a pet crocodile. It's Carson Steel.

Carson Steel is correct. 2020, he won Mr. Football in Indiana. Went to Center Grove, went to Ball State, was d undrafted, but was on the Kansas City Chiefs, and is now still in the NFL. That's right. He went to uh UCLA, I believe, for his final year of college, too.

Absolutely fantastic stuff. Yep. From Carson Steel. We have one more. We have one more. So, this guy 2006 won Mr.

Football in Indiana. Would you like any hints on this one? Because you're going to tell me it's tough. I will say it's tough. I was Okay. Well, let's we'll go step by step here.

What What position? Running back. Okay. What high school? Warren Central. Okay.

Warren Central running back. In 2006, I was a ripe 9 years old, so this might be tough. Um, but okay. Where'd he go to college? He went to Virginia Tech. Okay.

I was telling Dom before recording, this man made it to the NFL, only played three games. Okay. He was on the Colts in 2011. Oh. And played two games, and then he was on the Titans in 2012 and played one game. Okay.

Okay. I feel like uh he went to Virginia Tech. He went to Virginia Tech. Um why why don't you give me this one? So this guy's name is Darren Evans. Darren Evans.

Darren Evans. I've heard that name. Yep. I've heard that name. Played for the Colts very briefly. Played for the Titans for a single game and then was out of the league in two years.

So Okay. Still made it there. Hey, you know what? Five for six though. Solid, I will say. Okay, so we got Rex Grossman, Terry McLuren, Jack Kaiser, Jaylen Smith, Carson Steel, and Darren Evans.

And those are your six Indiana Mr. Footballs to make it all the way to the NFL. All right, good stuff. Hopefully, we see even more here in the cup in coming years. All right, let's keep it rolling with the Mr. Football.

Let's do it. So, you were saying speaking of the recent years, now we're going to see if Dom can name the last five Mr. Footballs in Indiana. So this is 2025, 24, 23, 22, and 21. Okay. So Carson Steel was in 2020, correct?

So these are the five after Carson Steel. Okay. I think there's some Notre Damers in here for sure. There are two Notre Damers. Yes. Okay.

Well, I one off the top of my head, watch this guy play covered in one of the best high school football players I've ever seen. That is real. That would be Mark Zachary. Mark Zachary is correct. He won in 2024. You never trust a man with two first names.

Ben Davis, stud. He's playing for some tick right now at Notre Dame. I mean, he's he's in that corner room, a stacked corner room with like Leonard Moore. Yep. All right. And Christian Gray.

Yep. Notre Dame's going to be good, folks. Mark Zachary, uh, briefly on the basketball team as well. He was also a receiver in high school, too. Dude, he was unbelievable. He'd catch a screen pass and take a 80.

Like, it was just so unbelievable. Uh, was on the state team his junior year, I believe. Uh, really, really good. Mark Zachary. Okay, that's in 2024, correct? I'm gonna go.

Uh, okay. Wait, I got to get 2025. This is crazy. Um, I need to meet I need to think here. 2025. Okay, let's go past that one.

Um, I'm going to go um I I think his name was Josh Ringer. That is correct. From East Central. Yes. Okay. Dog.

Absolutely dog. So Josh Ringer won in 2023. Went to East Central as you mentioned. And then went from Miami, Ohio for college. Okay. Yeah, he was he was unreal.

They beat my uh beloved Northwood Panthers in the state championship. Tough tough L for uh Nate Anderson company, but that's okay. All right. Josh Ringer was in what 2023. So two for two. You have 21, 22, and 25 left.

Okay. Okay. You said another Notre Damer. Okay. This time's out. I believe Drake Bowen.

Yes, sir. Three for three. So, Drake Bowen went to Andrean, went to Notre Dame. He says on here that he played running back and linebacker. Yeah, he's a linebacker for Notre Dame and is a stud. I mean, an absolute He is so good for Notre Dame.

Uh I love watching him play, man. He He's an elite tackler. And Drean, I'm assuming, won state that year. Let's just assume. Yeah, I can check for you. And Drean did win state in 2021.

Drake Bowen won Mr. Football in 2022. Okay. So, we got Josh Ringer, Mark Zachary, Drake Bowen. Yes. So, you have 22, 23, and 24.

You're looking for 21 and 25. Okay. I will also mention your three for three. So, thank you if you want to keep your streak going. Appreciate that. Um, okay.

I got to get last year's. This is bugging me. Um, let me give you a little bit of help. This won't be a ton, but 21 and 25 are both quarterbacks. Okay. Not Reese Taylor.

Not Reese Taylor. Nope. Okay. He was earlier. Also a Ben Davis guy. Reese Taylor was 2017.

Oh, okay. Yeah, it was quite a bit earlier. Uh Reese Taylor was good. He was good. IU guy. Yes, he was an IU guy.

21 and 25. Would you like high schools yet? No. I feel like I'll get it. Um both both quarterbacks. both quarterbacks.

What if you told me where these guys went to college? Sure. So, 21 started at Purdue and transferred to Louisville. 25 is at Murray State. Okay. Last year was Miles Mclofflin.

There we go. Yep. Miles McGloin is correct. From Knox High School and now is at Murray State. He was a quarterback 2025. Mr.

Indiana All Football. So now you got 22 through 25. We're just looking for 2021. Okay. Miles Mclofflin was a running back also, but he was one of those small school guys who did it all. And uh he was within a stones throw of Derrick Henry's career rushing record.

I believe he has the record for like yards in a season in Indiana, touchdowns in a career. He set national records for rushing yards and touchdowns in a season. Yeah, dude. That guy was unreal. Classic small school stuff. Uh kind of the second coming of Jack Kaiser, actually.

his numbers. He was the nation's second all-time leading rusher with, get this folks, 11,839 yards. He had 4,846 yards and 71 touchdowns in a season. It's unreal. I mean, it was every game. We started covering him towards the back half of last season because he was he was knocking on the door of Derrick Henry's record.

Um, that guy was such a he's such a stud. Okay, the more you know. All right, Miles Mclofflin. We got Mark Zachary. Okay, we got uh Josh Ringer and Drake Bowen. Drake Bowen.

Yep. So, you actually just went 25, 24, 23, 22, and now all we need is 2021. Okay. Quarterback, you say? Yep. Started at Purdue and finished at Louisville.

Okay, that should give it to me. I like why am I not getting that? Um, I will say his high school is not very notable, so I feel like if I gave it to you, it might give it away. But it is totally your call if you'd like it or not. Is it Gibson Southern? It is Gibson Southern.

Okay. I don't know this guy's name, though. He knows the high school, folks. I know the high school. Gibson Southern. Give me some on that.

Is it Brady? Yes. Uh, another notable Another notable NFL quarterback has this last name. Like MVP conversations. Allen. There you go.

Brady Allen. Brady Allen is correct. We pieced it together. Quarterback from Gibson Southern. Won in 2021, started at Purdue, transferred to Louisville. So all the way through 2021, Brady Allen, 22, Drake Bowen, 23, Josh Ringer, 24, Mark Zachary, and 2025, Miles McLaclin.

Okay, there are your last five Indiana footballs. Okay, I got to talk about this is actually a good segue into who I think is going to win Indiana Mr. Football this year. Who's going to win Indiana Mr. Football this season? Right off the bat, two guys jump off the page to me and they're both wide receivers.

Munchin Sales from Lawrence North. Absolute stud. 64 65 lightning quick speed. Greg Rickstro said Usain Bolt with hands. Okay. He's going to IU.

He's primed for an a thousand yard season. They got Darren Perether at quarterback. They got Xavon Moore in the backfield at running back. I'm telling you, all three of those guys can win Mr. Football this year. For Lawrence North has three Indiana Mr.

Football candidates. So, watch out for the Wildcats. They're going to be awesome. Number two for the back-toback defending state champion Brownsburg Bulldogs. Brandon Sharp. Another wide receiver, not as tall as Montin Sales, but equally as electric guy gets open at a high clip.

Oscar Fry, another guy who can win in Amsterdam Football. It just depends on how you value the stats because I tell you Oscar Fry stats going to be up. Brandon Sharp stats are going to be up. So, it's going to be really interesting to see those guys. So, we got three from Lawrence North. We got two from Brownsburg.

Right there. I'm giving you five candidates to potentially win Indiana Mr. Football. Outside of that, I mean, unless you want to go something kind of off the off thebeaten path here, there's a couple defenders. Sean Fox of Warren Central is a stud. Caleb Elkins is going D1.

Also, another Warren Central guy, too. Yeah. So, like, do defenders win Mr. Football? Like, probably not. I'm sorry, but those guys are absolute animals.

Okay. Jack Sorgg. Okay, that's where I was going. Jack Sorggy, quarterback for Tri West. Does he make an even bigger leap this year? He was going to go he was committed to Louisville and now he's committed to Wisconsin.

So that's a Big 10 quarterback right there. Does Jack Sorggy enter his name into the Mr. Football rankings here before the season? Those are my guys. Okay, I'm going with Munchin Sales, Brandon Sharp, Xavon Moore. I think solid top three right there.

Oscar Fry can get in there. Darien Prather can get in there. Jack Sorggy in the quarterback position. Those are kind of my five guys to watch out for for Indiana Mr. Football this season. It's going to be really interesting.

Will it's going to be a fun high school football season. Go back and listen to Greg Rick Straw's podcast I did with him previewing the high school football season. I mean, seriously, guys, Brownsburg, Westfield, Carmel, Center Grove, Warren Central can all win the state championship bar none. They absolutely can. What did I say? Westfield, Brownsburg, Carmel, Center Grove, Warren Central, and I feel like I'm forgetting another 6A school that's in the mix.

Got Lawrence North. Lawrence North. Bang. Lawrence North. So those are six schools that can win the 6A state championship. You're going to tell a lot who gets out of their sectional.

Sectionals are so hard here in the state of Indiana. Newal, who's going to stop Newal? Is it Cathedral? Is Cathedral going to stop Newal this season? New Pal has games at Ronali and at home against IMG Academy. Yep.

Mason Oglesby too is uh commit to I believe Kansas their tight end. He's going to be a tough cover too. Okay, there you go. So got them all over the place. Got him all over the place. Smaller schools.

We don't know. We a lot has to sift to the top there for what happens in, you know, 4 A, 3A, 2A, 1A. Roni is going to be around. Chitaard's going to be around. I mean, we went a whole conversation with Greg. We didn't even mention Chitard.

Chitaard's always around. All right. And uh uh you know it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch the Trojans play football as it always is. Cathedral and Chitaard one of my favorite matchups to watch. I'm actually really interested in this too. Dom, we talk about uh I know the contenders for state as a reporter.

I know you're on the sidelines for a lot of these games. Do you have a favorite high school to cover? Whether it's atmosphere, whether it's teams to watch. I'm actually really interested in this. Love the question. Uh there are several environments in which I very much enjoy.

Cathedral doesn't really play at home. Okay. They don't have a stadium. So when the Cathedral Chitaard games at the Butler Bowl, Yep. I really enjoyed that. Brownsburg environment.

Home games at Brownsburg are phenomenal. Phenomenal. I love covering Brownsburg. I just do. You can tell me I'm a homer. You can tell me I I go with the school who has the most success.

I love home games at Brownsburg. They are phenomenal. Caramel's a really good atmosphere, especially Carmel Westfield. Yes, it is. At either place, um really good atmosphere. Westfield's a great atmosphere to watch a football game.

Caramel's a great atmosphere to watch a football game. Growing away from 6A, New PAL has that Friday Night Lights feel to it. It's kind of smaller than you would expect for a for a school and a program who's had so much success. I want to say this again. Kyle Ralph as head coach of the New Pal Dragons is 155 and4 going into his 14th year. Insane.

That is crazy. 14 losses and how many years did you say he's going into his 14th? So basically a loss a season which is still nuts. It's insane. So I really like watching games at New Pal. Let me think here off the beaten path.

I'll tell you this down south. Center Grove is a fun environment that that's a little college town. I mean truly they they really care about the Trojans down there at Center Grove and obviously you know in the early I want to say 2020 Center Grove is just winning state championship after state championship. I think Greg Rigaw Greg Raw told me last year was the first year in a long time center didn't even make it to semi-state. So like that they are just churning out teams that are crazy. Stick in Hamilton County too.

The mudsock game is always phenomenal. Oh, I'm so happy you brought it up. Mudstock games elite no matter where it's played. Okay. Hamilton South Eastern's a great place. I give the edge to Fischers.

I like that. Well, yeah, he's a Fisers alum. Okay. But Fisers is a fun home field environment for sure. Um I I really do like Fischers. That's a good one.

I You know who I where I really enjoyed playing a game and this kind of gives me like down south or like and I don't know if it's because their mascot is a mountaineer, but Morsville sneaky. I They were our Spirit Award champions last year. Moresville is a cool environment. I really like Morsville. Um that just that just popped in my head. But I think Brownsburg takes the cake for me.

I mean, just go to a game and you'll understand what I'm saying. It's unbelievable. Um but that's a really good question, Will. I I I love covering high school football in the state of Indiana. All those schools I mentioned do a really good job for home games. Um I'm trying to think of like a smaller school that I really enjoy.

I really enjoyed seeing Cascade play. Those people care. Okay. They're out in the corn fields, but Cascad's a really cool place defending 3A state champions who are playing in 2A this year. Okay, so they went down a class because of enrollment and didn't have the success in years past to get the success factor moved up, but they ran through everybody a year ago. So Cascade's a team to watch out for in class 2A this season.

South Putham won the 1A state championship, they move up to 2A, so now you got Cascade and South Putinham in 2A. Really good match up. Pretty interesting, right? Um, but yeah, I I I I just love the environments for all of our high school football teams truly. Um, it's going to be another fun year, man. It I I also judge off who gives me the best food.

Okay, so you know, and I will say this, just as far as environments go, Lawrence North Lawrence Central is elite. It is. It's elite no matter where it's being played. That's a really fun one. But that's a really good question. I like that one.

That could be a clip. Dom's going to be around, guys. So, if you see him, go up to him. Be be hospitable. Yeah. refer to me as the get in sports guy though.

That'll make me feel good. Yeah. See if you see him around. Uh so yeah, that's high school football and that's a that's a variety pod I think right there. Yes, sir. So good stuff right there.

We did some Indiana Mr. Football trivia. All right. Listen to Greg Rick's podcast if you want to get ready for high school football season. We're going to be previewing, you know, and kind of as the season starts IU and Notre Dame, too. I'm really hellbent on getting some IU and Notre Dame coverage.

I mean, we'll talk about Purdue as well. I think there's a jump for Barry Odum's group this year. I really do. They won two games last year, but they very easily could have won four. Okay. And there's there's levels to this.

Okay. Ryan Walters just destroyed the culture at Purdue. And that was a brutal it was a brutal era. Like it just was like I'm sorry and I think Purdue fans would agree going from Jeff Braum and like what he was able to do like consistently eight wins at Purdue is very very very impressive. You see what he's doing with Louisville. It was a matter of time that him going back to Louisville.

It's his home. You know that there's nothing that Purdue did wrong. He He said no to Louisville the first time, folks. Okay? Like he did it. He came open again.

He had to do it. But I tell you this, I like Barry Odum. He looks good. I like Barry ODM. I I I think Purdue can get to the four, five win situation. Like I really do.

That'd be awesome for Purdue to get back to having a sweet atmosphere. I use IU. They're going to be This is just crazy that we're talking about them just consistent college football playoff contender. I think Notre Dame's the best team in the country. So, we want to get college football talk in here as well. So, stick with us for sure.
