Craig Mince, president of the Athenaeum Foundation, joined the Get IN. Podcast to share more about its 130-year history, today’s operations, paranormal activity, and festivals and traditions.
Built by Indianapolis' German Community
The Athenaeum was originally built in the late 1800s by Indianapolis' growing German-American population. Known at the time as Das Deutsche Haus, or "The German House," the building served as a center for education, social activities, music, and cultural events. It quickly became a symbol of the city's thriving German heritage.
Today, visitors can still see many of the original architectural details that make the building stand out. The grand staircases, historic halls, and beautiful brick exterior offer a glimpse into Indianapolis' past.
More Than a Historic Building
While The Athenaeum is rich in history, it is far from a museum frozen in time. The building remains an active community hub filled with businesses, event spaces, and cultural organizations. Visitors can enjoy restaurants, attend performances, participate in fitness classes, or simply wander through the historic corridors.
One of the most popular attractions is the Rathskeller, a German restaurant and beer garden that has become a favorite gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. During the warmer months, live music and outdoor events bring even more energy to the space.
A Center for Arts and Culture
The Athenaeum continues its original mission of promoting culture and community. Throughout the year, the building hosts concerts, festivals, art exhibits, and educational programs. Many local organizations call The Athenaeum home, helping keep the spirit of creativity alive in downtown Indianapolis.
Its location near Massachusetts Avenue also makes it easy to pair a visit with shopping, dining, and exploring one of the city's most walkable neighborhoods. For anyone looking to experience a different side of Indianapolis, The Athenaeum offers a fascinating look at the city's past while remaining an important part of its present.
