The Making of Umi Grill

In 2001, Terre Haute welcomed its first Japanese restaurant. Umi Grill, originally called Sushi Umi, has always been about more than the food, pairing gourmet dishes with an authentic, welcoming atmosphere. Once the owners realized the kitchen did far more than raw fish and sushi, they swapped "sushi" for "grill" and became Umi Grill. They kept "umi," the Japanese word for ocean, as a nod to the sea's role in Japanese cooking.

The menu keeps growing. Fresh sashimi and sushi, house-made soups and salads, and a long list of entrees are just part of it. It is one more reason Terre Haute keeps growing as a destination for Hoosiers across the state.

What Locals Are Recommending

Umi Grill holds about 4.7 stars on Google from well over 1,000 reviews. A few favorites to look for on your next visit:

For starters, you will find classics like gyoza and edamame. For an entree, there are rice, noodle, and meat dishes across the board. The vegetable fried rice is a reliable pick, and if you want something broth-based, the Shoyu Ramen pairs roasted pork and bamboo shoots in a soy-based broth. Beef, tempura, and veggie udon get plenty of love from reviewers too.

And you cannot go wrong with sushi. Along with fresh sashimi and specialty rolls, the Abi Roll is one of the bestsellers: a tempura-battered, deep-fried roll topped with housemade unagi sauce, spicy mayo, and green onion. Umi Grill also does bento boxes with several protein options, plus desserts worth saving room for.
