If you enjoy Indiana ghost stories, few local legends are as well known as Stiffy Green in Terre Haute. Tucked away in Highland Lawn Cemetery, this unusual gravesite has fascinated visitors for more than a century. Whether you believe in the supernatural or simply appreciate local folklore, Stiffy Green is one of Terre Haute's most talked-about attractions.

Unlike many haunted tales that fade over time, the story of Stiffy Green continues to attract curious visitors who want to see the famous grave of John G. Heinl for themselves.

The Story Behind Stiffy Green

The legend begins with a man named John G. Heinl, a local businessman who passed away in 1920. His beloved bulldog, whose name was Stiffy Green, was said to have remained faithfully by his owner's side even after his death. According to local stories, the grieving dog eventually died and was buried near Heinl's grave.

To honor his loyal companion, a life-sized statue of Stiffy Green was placed beside the family monument. For decades, the bronze dog sat alert, watching over the gravesite just as the real Stiffy Green was said to have done in life.

Why Is It Considered Haunted?

Over the decades, countless ghost stories grew around the statue. Some visitors claimed the dog's eyes would glow green after dark, while others said they heard barking or felt an eerie presence nearby. A few even insisted the statue changed position or seemed to watch people as they walked through the cemetery.

Of course, there is no evidence that any of these stories are true. Still, the legend has become one of Indiana's best-known ghost tales and has inspired books, ghost tours, and countless conversations among locals.

Where to See Stiffy Green Today

In the 1980s, a group of teenagers fired a shotgun into the Heinl gravesite and blew out one of Stiffy Green’s eyes. The Terre Haute Lions Club then built a replica of the Heinl mausoleum inside the County Historical Museum, and Stiffy was moved there in 1989, where he’s been ever since.

A Piece of Indiana Folklore

Highland Lawn Cemetery is peaceful and beautifully maintained, making it easy to visit the famous Heinl monument during daylight hours, where Stiffy Green watched over his owner. Many visitors stop there or at the County Historical Museum while exploring Terre Haute's historic sites or searching for unusual roadside attractions throughout Indiana.
