A Storied Past: The Rise and Fall of the Farmers Market
Originally known as the American Countryside Farmers Market, Southgate Crossing was built with ambition. Opened in 2007, it was a testament to craftsmanship, with over 490 indoor and outdoor booth spaces, all housed within a 51,000-square-foot building. At the time, it promised to be a landmark for Elkhart, offering everything from fresh produce to handmade goods. But as the region was hit hard by the recession, the market was forced to close its doors in 2010. Despite this setback, the building remained a beacon of potential, waiting for new life to be breathed into it.
A New Vision: Bringing Southgate Crossing Back to Life
In 2023, Southgate Crossing was purchased by Mike DeCola and Cami Mechling, a couple with a vision to revitalize the space into an artisan market and event center. With their established roots in the local community and their experience running the Nappanee Artisan Market, DeCola and Mechling are uniquely equipped to breathe new life into the iconic structure.
The couple’s mission is to celebrate local artisans, food vendors, and small businesses, giving them a platform to showcase their talents and creations. “We want to focus on what works… artisan items, local vendors, and hosting events that bring people together,” says DeCola.
What’s New at Southgate Crossing?
Today, Southgate Crossing is home to a variety of offerings that make it a must-visit destination. On the first floor, you’ll find a charming antique market, featuring everything from vintage furniture to unique collectibles. The second floor houses the Nappanee Artisan Market, offering locally handmade gifts, decor, and more. In addition to these local treasures, the space also hosts 40 vendors, with room for many more.
For those looking for an event space, Southgate Crossing offers the stunning Harvest Hall & Event Center, perfect for weddings, corporate gatherings, and special occasions. The venue’s rustic charm and large capacity make it ideal for creating memorable moments.
Dining and More
Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy at Southgate Crossing, with a variety of dining options. Soto’s Mexican Cuisine, Southgate BBQ, and La Michoacana Burgos serve up delicious meals, from slow-smoked BBQ to refreshing ice cream treats. The space is also home to a Thai restaurant, as well as 3rd Horse Craft Beverage Supply, a local homebrew supply store.
