Small Town Breakdown No. 85: Royal Center, Indiana

For this week's small town breakdown we're going from Bristol in Elkhart County to Royal Center in Cass County. Royal Center is one hour and 45 minutes north of Indianapolis, 55 minutes northeast of Lafayette, and 45 minutes west of Wabash.

The History of Cass County and Royal Center, Indiana

Cass County was established in 1829. It was named after General Lewis Cass, who was the second territorial governor of Michigan and later the U.S. Secretary of War. Logansport was selected as the county seat in August 1829. The arrival of the Wabash & Erie Canal made Logansport a successful agricultural trade center and helped small farm towns like Royal Center grow quickly. Cass County became a major Midwestern railroad junction when the steam locomotive arrived in 1855, and by the 1920s, over 200 trains passed through Logansport daily. The number of railroad tracks and bridges crossing the Wabash and Eel rivers gave Logansport its nickname “The City of Bridges.”

Royal Center was platted in 1846, and it grew when the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad was built in the area, establishing the Panhandle Route. Royal Center became incorporated in June 1880.

As of February 2026, Royal Center’s population was 919, making it the fourth-largest incorporated town/city in Cass County and the 372nd-largest incorporated town/city in Indiana.
