I went to Purdue. I was in the entrepreneurship and design school, not aeronautics, and I still spent four years on a campus that treats flight like the family business. The first university-owned airport in the country is there. The school calls itself the Cradle of Astronauts, and the first and last men to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan, both graduated from it. So did Gus Grissom, the Mitchell native and Mercury Seven astronaut. Indiana has a whole hall of fame for people like them.
So the news out of West Lafayette this summer landed for me a little differently than a wire story about a plane crash 89 years ago.
On July 24, Purdue University, the Purdue Research Foundation and the Archaeological Legacy Institute announced the Taraia Object Expedition. A 16-person team leaves in the first week of October to determine whether an object sitting in a lagoon in the middle of the Pacific is what's left of Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10-E.
Some of them fly out of the Amelia Earhart Terminal at the Purdue University Airport on October 3.
What they're actually going to look at
The target is the Taraia Object, a visual anomaly in the lagoon at Nikumaroro, an uninhabited island in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area in Kiribati. It sits alongside the Taraia Peninsula, which is where the name comes from.
Researchers first spotted it in satellite imagery in 2020. Then they went back through the archive and found something in the same position in aerial photographs taken in 1938, one year after Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan vanished on July 2, 1937.

Why anyone thinks it's the Electra
The Nikumaroro Hypothesis holds that Earhart and Noonan never reached Howland Island, landed on Nikumaroro instead, and were marooned there. It is one of several competing explanations for the disappearance and it has never been proven.
What the expedition organizers point to:
Radio bearings taken by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard and Pan American World Airways that converge on Nikumaroro.
An analysis of human bones found on the island in 1940 that the organizers say strongly supports the conclusion they were Earhart's.
Artifacts recovered on Nikumaroro that date to the 1930s, including a woman's shoe, a compact case, a freckle cream jar and a medicine vial.
The Bevington Object, an anomaly on the island's reef in a photograph taken three months after the disappearance, which some researchers read as part of the Electra's landing gear.
"The evidence supporting the Nikumaroro Hypothesis remains compelling, and the only way to answer this question is to go to Nikumaroro," said Richard Pettigrew, executive director of the Archaeological Legacy Institute, who is leading the expedition.
The Purdue connection is not a naming rights deal
Here's the part most coverage skips.
Earhart came to Purdue in 1935, recruited by then-president Edward Elliott. She lived in the women's residence hall, worked as a career counselor and advisor to women students, and consulted with the aeronautical engineering department. Her appointment ran through 1937.
While she was there, the Purdue Research Foundation raised the money for her airplane through the Amelia Earhart Fund for Aeronautical Research. Purdue trustee David Ross put in money. So did J.K. Lilly and Vincent Bendix, along with Western Electric, Goodrich and Goodyear. The result was the Lockheed Electra 10-E she called her flying laboratory.
And she intended to bring it back. According to Steven Schultz, Purdue's senior vice president and general counsel, "Both Earhart and her husband and manager, George Putnam, expressed their intention to return the Electra to Purdue after her historic flight."
Schultz is the team lead for Purdue on this expedition. Two Purdue alumni in the Cradle of Astronauts group, Sirisha Bandla and Marc Hagle, are also on it.
"She challenged conventions, pushed the boundaries of what was possible and inspired countless others to do the same," Schultz said.

The Amelia Earhart Terminal at the Purdue University Airport opened in August 2025 and honors that 1935 to 1937 stretch of her life. In October, part of the team searching for her plane walks out of that building to go get it.
The schedule

The full 16-person team assembles in Tarawa, Kiribati, on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
The team departs Tarawa by sea on Wednesday, Oct. 7, sailing roughly 830 nautical miles to Nikumaroro.
They spend several days on the island.
The team includes archaeologists, filmmakers, logistics, scuba and safety personnel, and Kiribati representatives.
Partners: the Archaeological Legacy Institute, the Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue University.
The trip was supposed to happen in 2025. It got pushed while organizers worked through clearances with the government of Kiribati. Cabinet approval came in July 2026, which is what opened up the October window.
What happens once they're on the island
Phase 1 is identification, not excavation. The plan, in order:
Document the site with video and still imagery before anything gets touched.
Run magnetometers and sonar over the lagoon floor.
Use a hydraulic dredge to lift sediment off the object and expose enough of it to identify.
Survey the land for debris that washed ashore.
ALI expects that if the object is the Electra, they'll know within a couple of days of arriving. That is a short fuse on an 89-year-old question.
If it is the plane, Phase 2 is a full archaeological excavation in 2027. Phase 3, if it's feasible, is a recovery effort to bring what's left to a permanent curation and display facility at Purdue.
The Hoosier version of this story
Every few years someone announces they're close to solving the Earhart disappearance, and so far every one of them has been wrong. This one could be too, and the organizers are the first to call the Nikumaroro Hypothesis a hypothesis.
What makes it worth watching from Indiana is who's going. Purdue raised the money for that airplane in 1936, expected it back, and never got it. Ninety years later the university's general counsel is sailing 830 nautical miles to check a shape in a lagoon.
