Just outside the small college town of Greencastle, Indiana sits one of west-central Indiana’s best hidden outdoor spots. The DePauw Nature Park is a 520-acre natural area filled with wooded trails, open fields, and peaceful scenery. It’s a great place to take a hike, go for a trail run, or simply enjoy a quiet walk in nature.
From Quarry to Nature Park
Even though it’s connected to DePauw University, the park is open to the public, and many people visiting the area don’t realize it’s there. The land that is now the nature park used to be a limestone quarry. From the early 1900s until the late 1970s, stone was mined here. After the quarry closed, the land slowly returned to nature.
In 2004, the area officially opened as the DePauw University Nature Park. Today, visitors can still see the tall quarry walls and unique landscape that make this park different from many other Indiana parks.

Miles of Trails to Explore
One of the best parts of the park is its trail system. There are over nine miles of trails that wind through forests, meadows, and along a small creek.
A few popular trails include:
Rim Trail – A scenic path that circles the quarry
Creekside Trail – A relaxing walk along the water
Quarry Trail – One of the most interesting routes through the old quarry area
The trails are mostly gravel or natural paths, making them perfect for hiking, running, and casual nature walks.

A Peaceful Place for Wildlife and Nature
Because the park is so large, it’s easy to find quiet areas where you can slow down and enjoy the outdoors. Deer, birds, and other wildlife are often seen throughout the park. Benches and scenic spots along the trails also make it a great place to stop and take in the views.
