The Charger House: Ligonier's Fish-Fry Institution
In Ligonier, Indiana, The Charger House is a family-owned spot that has built its whole reputation on one thing: fried fish. The Facebook handle is literally "icelandiccod," which tells you where the pride is.
Order the Fish
The signature plate is lightly breaded, fried Icelandic cod with golden fries and coleslaw. Ask a local what to get and nine times out of ten you will hear "the fish," and some Hoosiers will tell you it is the best fried fish in the state. Beyond the cod the menu runs deep, with full breakfasts, lunches, and comfort-food dinners. Breakfast is served daily, with the full breakfast menu available until 11 a.m.
Tip: grab a booth, order the fish, and save room for dessert.
A Come-As-You-Are Room
The Charger House is not fancy, and it does not try to be. The room is modest, the welcome is genuine, and the plates come out hot and generous. The staff is known for being friendly and quick, and carry-out is there if you would rather take the fish to go. That consistency is what has kept it a Ligonier staple for regulars and travelers alike.
