Welcome inside the Get Indiana podcast studio. Nate Spangle, founder, beautiful person, unbelievable guy, just extraordinaire of all things, everything joins us. I'm so pumped this morning, dude. Dude, it is week four of high school football here in the state of Indiana. And yes, we just wrapped up week one of college football. We're We're like here and pros coming like this Wednesday, tomorrow.
There's football at the time of this recording. NFL football. When you when this gets out, it's 7 a. m. right now. This is going to get out this afternoon.
Yes, there's going to be football tomorrow. Yes, let's freaking go. I know. We're timely here. People are going to be like, we recorded same day delivery package fresh. Ding.
Order's ready. Ding, your order is ready. We got fun fun week. We had a great week three of Friday Night Football. Yes, we did. Uh, as of today, as of the time we're recording, there are 65 unbeaten teams.
There are still 65 hanging on. That's a good stat. I mean, that's pretty good, right? 65 teams still holding on to that perfect season. We do have to talk about the first headline, widest margin of victory. This is one I just I just love this.
This is this is his thing. First of all, I love talking high school ball with you and I appreciate the response we've gotten to this show because I'm going to keep dragging Nate in here every Tuesday and we're going to talk high school ball. We can talk high school ball. There were some great great great games uh across the state of Indiana. All right, biggest blowout. What we got?
Biggest blowout. Uh well actually we're gonna say in respectful tone the widest margin in victory. Okay sorry now biggest blowout. Shout out to the number two of 5A Bloomington South hangs 77 up on our boys at Terote North Patriots. Okay. Remember we talked about Bloomington South and they are knocking on the door just like Miraville's knocking on the door in class 5A.
Gabe Johnson's bunch in Bloomington South. Get this. back in 2021, 2022 went to regionals. 2023, 2024, 2025 went to semi-state. They are knocking on the door, dude. Are they frustrated?
I mean, you score 77 on anyone and and you might be in the money. They've beaten Bloomington North, a rival, 44 to6, Martinsville perennially solid, 4814, and Teroot North perennially not as solid, 77 to zero. And I can say that cuz I covered the Patriots over there in terote for quite a long time. but averaging 56 points per game. Shout out to Bloomington South. I'm going to give a lot of shout outs.
We're going to If there's one thing you got to know about Dom, if you listen to the last episode, it's shout out. Shout out this, shout out that. There is no shortage of shout outs. I got to do synonyms for shout outs. I just have it on here. The thesaurus out.
The thesaurus. Thank you. It's early. Uh other big uh uh headlines. This This is what I love. I'm here for this.
Can we talk about Fremont? Talk about Fremont. Can we talk about Fremont? They had lost 23 straight games to Cherbusco last Friday night, buddy. They pull out a 40 to 25 victory. 23 straight.
That is two decades. That's like your children. Like someone and their children both lost to Churbus. That means the last time if they've played every single season, the last time Chur or excuse me, Fremont beat Churbusco, I was six years old. Isn't that crazy? That is wild.
That's pretty nuts, dude. That's 2003. Uh, something like that. You know what happened in 2003? What happened in 2003? Chitaard beat Northwood in the state championship 63 to zero.
O, that's a tough one to take back to Napony. We'll talk about Chitaard later cuz they're at the top of my list. Okay, so Fremont breaks a 23game losing streak. Congrats to them, dude. I think it's the Fremont Eagles. Well done.
Well done to the Fremont Eagles. Yes, I am addicted to the mascot game. We're going to play it later. Isn't it awesome? I'm so happy you've been sending it in the thing. Uh, we have it in the show notes.
You can play. We We have it ready for release for the public. We can give the link out for people to play. It'll be in the show notes of this episode. Was that Beta Stage or That was beta stage, but we were playing. Now it's like almost full full go, but we've been tinkering around with that.
Uh, another big streak broken. We're going up to the region. Yes. Northwest Indiana. Shout out to the crew. Another shout out.
Uh, got to give our thing. Got to give some kudos to the crew at Hammond Null. They took down Whiting 19-6. And that was the first time they'd done that in a dozen years. A dozen years. A dozen straight losses.
They flip it over. Hammond null takes down Whiting 19 to6. I love Whiting. I had a great time up there. Great small school, but the Oilers couldn't get it done. We're going to keep giving shout outs.
That's okay. And also, uh, good response on our region love letter. Oh, by the way, thanks. Thank you. We love you guys. and we have a great game to talk about in the region.
But uh if we want to finish up these headlines just a bit little bit, can I rattle off three um upsets for you? Maybe not maybe off the beaten path upsets. Yes. Um but Gary West gets it done over Hammond Central 40 to13. Western Boon Weibo gets it done over Crawford'sville 5724. I think that's upset based on size.
I think Crawford'sville is a bigger high school. Don't necessarily know of like like perennial history if that's necessarily an upset. I think Weebo might feel disrespected like thinking they should have gone in and win the games. It's a smaller school Weibo going in there and hanging up 57 on uh the bigger school in Montgomery County. I want to talk to you about Mike Kersner. Okay, I'm pretty sure I saw him jogging the other day.
Really? I'm almost positive, but Okay, so he didn't start his career at Mount Vernon Fortville, but he had a very nice stint with them back from 2018 to 2020. He's coached at Cascade, Ben Davis, where he won two state titles, Mount Vernon, and most recently Warren Central. Took a year off. Now he's back in coaching ranks with Mount Vernon where he uh had a previous stop in his career and they get it done over Greenfield Central 28-7. Do you know what Mike Kushner's overall record is?
No, I I couldn't tell you. In 23 seasons. 23 season. This is a reverse of the trivia you gave me. But you're like the sports guy. Uh 23 seasons.
I'm going to say successful coach 65 and 72. Very close. 167 and 90. That's a really nice guess right there. Come on. There we go.
We know ball here. All right, let's keep going here. All right. Is there anything that stuck out? Do you mind if I tell you some games before we go class by class? Some games that stuck out to me.
Yeah, I want to hear your games. Okay, I want to talk about Cathedral because we have talked on this program about Cathedral maybe being quote unquote down this season. All right. It was a tough start to the year for Cathedral, but they go to Cincinnati Saint X perennial powerhouse. Do you want to know what they do? They get a win 30-21 over Saint X.
I want to talk about some guys who stood out. No. Well, wait. Do we know is Saint X down? I don't know. But I I look at this and I say this is catching my attention.
All right. I mean, I I agree it's catching your attention. Xavier Dangerfield. I mean that name. Xavier Dangerfield runs for 130 yards and a touchdown to win. I mean, with a name like that.
Okay, good. Luke, okay, so they had two guys throwing the ball, but Cathedral threw the ball 14 times. They completed 11 of them. All right. Okay, let's call it 227 yards passing. 131 of those yards passing went to Evan Johnson.
Six receptions, 131 yards, and a touchdown. So really anytime you get three digits on the receiving yards, that's pretty good. And when for a team who doesn't throw all that much, too. But Xavier Dangerfield, shout out to you, sir. Touchdown, 130 yards rushing. Cathedral goes to Ohio.
Gets it done after an 0 and2 start to the season. Well done, Indianapolis Cathedral. Is St. Xavier the one or is it Mhler? One of them has a really cool like bowl. I don't know.
Or is that Elder? It might be Elder. See, I know. I get there's like a couple of I don't know my I don't know my Cincinnati high school mascots very well, but I know that there's one really really cool stadium in high school football in Cincinnati. So the uh the Cathedral Fighting Irish play five teams out of state. They lost to Loyola Academy a week ago.
Get it done and then they got chitaard next week. I mean we'll we'll go through matchups but Cathedral well done for you guys. Okay, I wanted to mention the alma mater Northwood. A little shaky start to the year. They got smoked by Columbia City to start the season. Bounceback win a week ago over New Prairie.
They draw Warsaw ranked third in class 5A. Bart Curtis, original Black Crunch. We have We have talked about Bart Curtis on every episode. It's just the Curtisc. The Curtis report. Curtis report.
But Northwood is up 22-21. They tie it or they they score to quote unquote tie it. It's 2120. Nate Andrews goes for two. Gets it. 22-21 with a minute to play.
Warsaw goes down and scores. No. In the final seconds of the game, Trent Sers was there. My guy Trent Cellers. Dude, I actually saw I I was up in North this week and I saw I met Nate Andrews at church. Did you really, dude?
Hell of a handshake, right? Everybody says that about him. He has a hell of a handshake. Handshake will if you're not ready, it'll break your hand. I just got out of church. I was like, you know, every time I see him now, I come right.
I was unprepared for the handshake, but great guy. He introduced himself. Uh uh what church? St. Dom's up in Breeman. Great time.
I do have to say that was our Northern Indiana sports report powered by our friends at Bear Ace Hardware. They got three locations. Elcart, Lraange, Ligonier. Go check them out. All of your hardware needs at Bear Ace Hardware. We if you need your hardware needs service, we knew a guy.
Yeah. Travis Bear. Let's keep rolling, Dominic. Okay, but Northwood, you guys just keep on trucking. Okay, you got Plymouth next week on the road. All right.
Might be a down year for the Panthers, but that's a really respectable effort, and I just had to give him Yeah. give him a little something. What else stuck out to you? Okay, so we didn't mention this in matchups last week, and I wish we would have. Um, New Pal, who falls to East Central two weeks ago, licking their wounds a little bit. They're not used to losing.
You know who stuck out to us the first few weeks? Yorktown, who was ranked seventh in class 4A. Newal ranked second in class 5A, gets it done 4228 over there on the east side of I guess East Central Indiana. But Newal gets back in the win column and gets back scoring a lot of points. 4228, dude. Here's the thing.
So, what Newal Stranked or they're still ranked in the 5A? Uh, obviously East Central's really good. Yes. Like four I don't know how the game went. We probably need to look at like how scoring went back. If it was competitive, I think that sets Yorktown up to say that they can play ball.
Obviously, you want to be in the win column. You don't want to lose games. They're in 4A, too. They're in 4A, you know, and and Newal is this perennial powerhouse. Yes. This is a great point by you.
And if you look at class 4A right now, okay, so you have East Central who beat New You have Chitard who is absolutely rolling right now. Chitaard looks unbeatable at this present moment. The way they absolutely handled Lafayette Jeff, handled Leo, handled Ronali. I left the Chitaard Ronali game. 14-7 Ronali. 3 minutes to go in the first half.
Chitard scores twice in three minutes of game time. They score 35 unanswered and win that game 424. They were playing with uh Mission uh on the second half there. Uh obviously question marks on the uh injury report there of what's going on with uh with the running back um with Danny. Yeah, we're figuring they're still figuring stuff out there. He didn't breaking news.
No, it's not breaking news. Anyway, yeah, he uh I think he got rolled up with his ankle. So, we're figuring out there. Prayers right there. But then you know what they pulled out which was awesome. They slung the ball.
Harrison ODM I mean dude he threw for four touchdowns, three to Cam Harden, one to Julio Gr. like the you're thinking it's a run first game. Shitard holds Ron Golli scoreless in the second half to win 4214 35 unanswered. He tossed the rock for 244 and I believe four touchdown passes. Yeah. I want to talk about a brother combination.
I have to believe they're brothers cuz their names are awesome. Jagger Gidry had an absolute hit stick. Okay. to start the game. And then I believe his brother Jack Gryins had a 95 yd kickoff touchdown return that I saw that was electric also. Oh yeah all three in all three facets of the game.
Chitaard Ronali. Yeah, there's three phases. Spank Chitaard Ronali was fantastic atmosphere. Shout out to both student sections. I heard you. Ronali student section listens to the program.
Proud of you guys. Keep on listening. Appreciate you. There was a coach on the sideline who during the game looked at me and said, "Hey, love the podcast." Yeah. So, I was like, "Shout out to that.
You're my man. You're the man." I didn't catch his name because it was during the game, but you're you're the man. Uh, but back to my point about 4A Spang. You you got Dwanganger ranked third who beat Ronali to start the season. Dwer's the defending state champion in class 4A.
Then you got Ronali. Then you got Yorktown who's just kind of sitting there lurking. Okay. I'm intrigued very much by class 4A this season. Lot of uh of interesting questions. Let's listen to those teams.
I mean, East Central, Chitaard, Fort Wayne Dwinganger, Ronali, Yorktown. Then you got South Ben St. Joe in the mix. East Noble in the mix. Just keep your eye out for 4. Yeah.
And again, it kind of does spread the state for the 4. Again, East Noble, right? You're looking that's like a Fort Wayne area. You're talking Hobert over in the the region. Then you have Southman, St. Joe, Mishwaka.
Not a lot of Southern Indiana representation, but you got to talk about Evansville writes 3 and 0. Everyone's Hey, we did a little mini love letter to Evansville there. A lot of thrillers, a lot of good teams. Writes is ranked 10th 3 and 0. They beat Jasper 56-21. Oh.
Um, okay. Sorry. Is this the Is this the big game this weekend? I think this weekend is is it modern day and uh rights? It is Evansville North Evansville writes Modern Day plays Evansville Memorial. Okay, Memorial.
So big big uh cross town rivalry there. Let's go. I'm I got to get down to Evansville, guys. I have to. Let me round out rapid fire. You wanted to know if Tippy Valley was for real.
Adam Central comes in, beats Tippy Valley 33 to2. So a little humbling there for the Vikings. Okay, that's a get right for Adam Central. They lost to East Side. That was a close game. East Side was ranked uh in 2A.
So, a big win for them. Adam Central's like, "What's going on?" I feel like we've talked about this, but I remember covering Adam Central in 1A. So, the fact that they're in 3A is we did talk about freaking me out a little bit, but uh big win for Adam Central, Tippy Valley, licking their wounds a little bit. Who did you say did not deserve to be ranked in class 2A? Do you remember this?
Who are you like, they haven't scored a point in two weeks? The the Linton Miners. The Linton Miners. So they go to Lutheran and it did not go well for the Linton Miners. Oh no. I got there.
I literally was going to get highlights of that. I got there at halftime. 35 nothing Lutheran. I turned around and left. I was like I'm out of here. I'm not I mean Linton's not in our area.
Lutheran's up big. I got to get back and ride a show. They win 42-13. Lutheran gets it done. You know what I hear here? You know what I see here?
Linton scored. Linton's on the board. I don't think they're going to be ranked after this week. I have to be I have to imagine that they're not. And then finally, 2A number 11 Tipton goes to 1A fourthranked Lafayette Central Catholic and wins 28-21. That coach is still rolling, baby.
Hey, wait. Yes. Uh, are they undefeated since we called him out for his 150th win? I believe so. I believe so. Is that a get in sports bump right there?
Typton's 3 and 0, boys and girls. The Blue Devils, baby. Come on now. Aaron toll 152 and 91 in 22 years. 152. Come on.
All right, Dom, start taking us through uh let's go through the classes. All right, we want to go 1A spang. Those are your headlines a little bit of what we saw just statewide in interesting scores. But let's get a little deeper into our analysis here, Spangle. All right, we'll talk about 1A. I know a lot of you I think that was our best performing video, Spangle, was our 1A recap.
Well, come on. First off, uh, we've got to give some love to our friends on on the border of Fulton County and Miami County. We're talking Casten takes down North Miami 2814. Okay, that's pretty good cuz I feel like in the history, North Miami's been pretty good in the past few years. And Casten has historically not been so good because that's who we would be at Triton and we were historically not very good. So Castton getting it done, doubling up North Miami, that's a big win for the Comets of Casten High School.
the comments of Casten. I will say Carol in Flora. I was told that there are more pigs than people in Flora. I I think that's true. There was a woman last year who direct messaged me on Facebook and said, "Hey, I know Florida is a really long way away. Please come for Operation Football Sunrise Kickoff."
We put them in the fan voting like, "Okay, they won't win." And they won. And I went there and did an Operation Football Sunrise Kickoff. They brought the parents. There were a parents the stands was half full with parents and then the kids were on the field. That's the difference, dude.
That's the difference you get in Yeah. roughly an hour and 30 minutes depending on traffic. 60 68 miles. Okay, so really quick, Hagerstown was one of the communities that got absolutely devastated by flooding. Their entire football field was under 6 to 8 feet of water cuz they have a little complex. It's like two seconds away from the school and it goes like down and there's your baseball field.
The baseball field fence got taken away. The water was up to the scoreboard. I'm actually going to do a story on it this week cuz their first home game was this past Friday and they got it all done. Got the equipment back. I mean, we're talking equipment was ruined. Everything was ruined.
And they hosted their first home game this past week and I believe they won. Uh they did win in Hagerstown. The community came together. They have a town about 13,400 and the guidance counselor I spoke to said probably a thousand of those people were impacted by the flooding. No way. It was bad.
And uh he was I mean he was a really cool guy and I'm really happy I did that. And the Hagerstown Tigers moved to 3 and 0 after getting it done. You want to talk about 617 an absolute unit of a human being. Head coach Scott Snodgrass. That dude could suit up today and play football. Oh my gosh.
If we get let's get a picture of him on the screen. That guy rocks. For for anyone watching on YouTube, Facebook, you're going to see the picture of Coach Snodgrass. That just sounds good. Guy you don't mess with. So I I mean that's really awesome community coming together.
Love the small town stuff in Indiana. That's what this the storytelling I signed up for when I started this job. Heck yeah. Anyway, back to our 1A report. 1A report. Uh we had a little Clinton County battle.
Okay. The Gophers of Clinton Prairie move to 3 and 0. get it done over Clinton Central 27 nothing. That is a conference matchup. Clinton Central moves to 2-1. Yeah, our friends, the home team, the Gophers of Clinton Prairie, they're uh they're rocking and roll.
They're one of those 65 undefeated teams. Okay, we had a very high level 1A ranked matchup. Milin defeats 10th ranked North Decar and it wasn't close. 56-7 Milin getting it done. The Milin Indians, come on, dude. That's are two and one.
That's on me. That's a hooer. How about Ryan Lenerman being at Milin since 2005? They're coming off a semi-state appearance last year. Let's go. So, all right, Indians, let me see what you got.
That's a big time ranked win in class 1A right there. All right. Uh, other news, our our guy JB gets it done. Gets their first win of the season. Frontier takes down North White 2614. Big time.
Coach Baron back in the win column. Oh my word. Yes. Sorry, I keep forgetting. Where is Where's Jack? Where's he at?
Uh at Frontier. Frontier. Okay, cool. Falcons. Uh Riverton Park. Really good.
That's West Central Indiana Pride right there. Beating Fountain Central. Are they the number one ranked team in 1A? They sure are. I've been there quite a bit in my day. Oh, Riverton Park.
It's done over the Mustangs of Fountain Central 4120. So Riverton Park Heritage have this little, you know, Park County situation. Well, cuz Riverton Park, which one is which one is Rockville? like the consolidated Rockville High School. That is Park Heritage, I believe. That's Park Heritage.
Cuz I remember Rockville was a school not that long ago. That is correct. Park Heritage is very new. When I was covering teams there, they had just been like established, I think. Rockville and Turkey Run High Schools consolidated in 2018 2019. Yes, good call.
There we go. So that's what is Park Heritage. Yeah. Wow. The more you know. I I really enjoyed my time covering football over there.
like South Vermillion, North Vermillion, Linton, Vincens's, Terote North, Terote Southwest, West VGO. I enjoyed my time over there, Spang. I did. Uh, okay. But class 1A, um, wasn't anything too nuts. I don't believe I'm like looking back through it all.
We want to give uh, Westell gets it done over Fort Wayne Blackhawk. West Central takes down Tri County 49 nothing. Culver beats Triton 340. No, it's uh, I I got the inside report. Okay, we're we're figuring it out. We're young.
We got So, Triton graduated 13 seniors last year, which in 1A that's a that's a program, right? So, people got to put in some time, stick to the process. You got to have your young kids develop, continue to hit in the weight room. Hey, there's no shame. Hey, we, you know, Okay, can we do we mention the Park Heritage game? I was just gonna say, speaking of Park Heritage, Spang, what was their final?
154 over South Vermillion. Nice. Uh, I I want to know South's a fun place to be. Do you I want to know if that how that game went. Like, do you think that they scored and went for two? Wait, PSA, I want you guys to send us information.
If there's a game, we look at your comments and we love your comments. I think that's why our last week's show was great. If there's a game that was crazy, tell us how it went. Direct message Spangarai. Direct message Get in Sports. Hell, I'll put my email out here.
Dominic geta. com. Whoa. Email me. I want standout performers. Okay.
So, like our boy Xavier Dangerfield for Cathedral. The reason I mentioned Cathedral stats is because David George, my guy, shout out to you, sends media stats from Cathedral every single week. Uh, I believe New Pal does the same. Um, please, by all means, send us standout performers, standout games. What stuck out to you? We're here for it.
I in that South Vermillion Park Heritage game, South Vermillion drew first blood up 7-0. How do you know this? By the way, I'm in the I'm in the box score on Max Brav. Then in the second in the second quarter, uh Park Heritage ties it up 7-7. Third quarter, South Vermillion uh goes up 14-7. And in the fourth quarter, I'm trying to figure out what where it was.
Go for two. Fourth quarter, 849. Monik two-yard run and then Bentley Lambro runs it in for two for so they can get the job done. 1514. Love that for Parker. Dude, the coaches just got to remember like, hey, we go for the win, we go for the tie.
You're going to make the playoffs anyway. Lay lay it all out there. All right, there we go. Now we can go talk 2A. Okay, 2A. Lutheran gets it done over Linton.
I do suspect, as Spangle called last week, Linton perhaps will drop out of the rankings. 0 and3 now. That's not something Linton's accustomed to over there. I'm sure they're not very pleased with that start to the season. The fact that we've talked about the Linton Miners in every episode is also hilarious. Obviously, we talked about Typton being Lafayette Central Catholic.
I think that's a very impressive win right there. Renelier Central gets it done over John Glenn. 14- nothing. Renelier Central 3 and 0. The Bombers, baby. Bomber Bob.
Um, anything else sticking out? I'm not seeing Oh, Cascade. Obviously, look, Cascade, they're 2-1, 5214. They're in 2A. They're here. They're ready to rock and roll.
So, very, very impressed with the uh our one overtime game of the week was in 2A. Here, it one overtime. Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter. Cardinal Ritter 39, Providence 36 in double overtime. Okay. Uh, Ritter gets the job done.
moves to one and one I believe. So yeah, over on the west side getting the getting the overtime victory. Another big margin of victory. East side beats Central Noble 63 to zero. Brownstown Central ranked first in class 2A beats New Albany 540. Breamman is 3-0.
I want to talk about the Breamman Lions beating Boone 52 to7. Breamman fresh off a drubbing of training. Come on, dude. I didn't have to make it in this show, too. 52-7 2A 2A looked pretty lopsided. Like Alexandria 41, Eastbrook 7, Blackford 47, Lwood 14.
Okay. I do want to say about Lwood. So, obviously they're they're still working on the numbers thing like they have to keep all the kids out. But I got a I got a lovely uh direct message say, "Hey, video did very well. It's really cool that um it's really cool that the boys like rallied together and did this. But the girls flag football team, apparently the Lwood Panthers girls flag football team is second to none.
Well, you saw the response of the girls flag football situation a couple weeks back. ESPN was at Grand Park. It's a huge situation. I was talking to Heather McGawan, athletic director at Ben Davis, just talking about the absolute explosion of popularity in girls flag football in the state of Indiana. People are hungry for this and it is eligible. It is I forget if it's either it has been sanctioned as an IHSA sport or it is eligible to be sanctioned for like state championships, tournament, the whole nine yards.
There are a ton of girls high school flag football teams in the state of Indiana spang. They're pumped, dude. The Lwood girls, I just they're they reached out and they said really cool that the boys are getting all this love, but just know the girls flag football team. I believe they're two and one on the season. They have some pretty good Yeah. Yeah.
They got a big win over Anderson Prep. Lost a close one 18 to 12 on against Heron and then uh got it done against Cardinal Ritter. So shout out classic. This is a show of shout outs, but we got to say Yeah, dude. I love I love all things. I want to give everyone love across the state, man.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Anything football. It's really encouraging to see young women in the game of football. I think just in sports, dude.
It's it's fantastic. This is the ep the epicenter of of female girls women's sports. Love it here in Indiana. Uh but I will say what we were talking uh Clarksville took down Switzerland County 30 to 27. Like that was a kind of close one. All of them were pretty lopsided.
Uh, Eastern 52, Deli 7, Eastern Hancock 40, Centerville 6, East Side 63, Central Noble 0ero, Green Castle 43, Frankfurt 12. Like these are just all Green Castle's first win of the year, I believe. Uh, it's a bit interesting because Cole Stevens getting a lot of love that that QB position, especially out of the Get In sports account. Try West. Are they 3A? Yes, they are.
All right, what a good segue. What a great segue. Uh, yeah, Jack Sorggy, man. We're looking at you, sir. Wait, can we get our our weekly Sorggy report? Sorggy report.
What's going on? Uh 4123 Tri West gets it done over Monrovia. Okay. I just I feel the need to say this every show. Coach Jason Ward told me if they're not playing for a state championship, it's a fail. Coaches just don't say that all the time.
And he said that to me before the season. That's a good stat. I mean, he's probably looking back like, "Oh gosh, like I get No, he's a really really nice guy. They they beat Monrovia 41-23 after falling to rights, which like no shame in falling to Evansville Rights, by the way. 4A team. That was a neutral sight game at Gibson Southern on a Saturday.
Um, yeah, they call it Friday Night Lights for a reason. So, they've beaten Western Boon, they've lost to Evansville Rights, and they beat Monrovia. I'm eyeing for Tri West. I am eyeing that Indian Creek game. Okay. And Cascade is no longer in the sectional.
So, if I'm Jason Ward, I'm feeling the exact same way. All right. We got to get this thing right. They're averaging 36 points a game. The defense needs to get tuned up a little bit, but Tri West. All right.
Class 3A, I mean, we talked about it, Spain. Class 3A doesn't have a ton of Indianapolis teams, which is fine. I'm just saying from from my position as an Indianapolis sports reporter as far as like covering it for a state championship. We're looking at Tri West and only Tri West. However, there are a ton of really good class 3A teams. Evansville Memorial, they beat Evansville Central.
Andrean out of the region they beat Kaki Valley. Gibson Southern beat Mount Vernon Posey and Adam Central obviously beat Typicanw Valley. But Indian Creek and Tri West in a couple weeks spangle that was our game of the week when those two played last year. Just watch it because uh what's his name? Max Gooden, solid coach at Indian Creek as well. Yeah, the uh the official Sergy report for uh this last So one I didn't realize he's 66.
He he grew this past off season. Wow. He was like 6'2 63. He grew and he's committed to go to Wisconsin, right? Yeah, he was committed to Louisville. Decommitted committed to Wisconsin where his dad played, I found.
Oh, I love that legacy. Okay, here we go. Uh, he was 13 for9 for 226, three touchdowns, did throw a pick, but that's all right. You know, sometimes longest of the night was 53 yards. This Max Preps again. Oh, yeah.
I'm on max preps, baby. Max prep or miss. This is This is what I Okay. Well, this is according to Max Prep, so if the stats aren't right, blame them, not me. Uh he did rush 10 times for 82 yards. So he's good, man.
He's dynamic, dude. I want to see this guy run a 40. He said coach Fickle's got a plan for him. He He's a very mature guy. I really enjoyed talking to him. So his dad's actually obviously everyone knows his dad was the backup to Peyton Manning for a really long time.
He actually is the OC for Tri West. Oh, so I love that. Really interesting. Well, that's our that's been our source report for this week. Adam Central, Tibby Valley. That I did want to see if Tibby Valley was for real, Spang.
So, I'm happy you called that out. Indian Creek beats Greenwood. McCannqua beats Northfield. And then Evansville Memorial number one ranked. I just said they beat Evansville Central. Gibson Southern beat Mount Vernon Posie.
Also said that Twin Lakes 40 nothing over Western. Is that uh No, no, no. Twin Lakes. That's up by Monaceel. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. To win legs takes. You mentioned Hammond null obviously big time win. Okay. So, who's our front runners at 3A?
Yeah, that's a great question. Andrean getting it done 516 over Kaki Valley. Uh wait, do you know the mascot for Kaki Valley? Vikings. Cougars with the K. Okay, that was just a stab in the dark.
Hey, I want to say congratulations to John Hurley of Evansville Memorial getting win number 160 in his 19th year as head coach. Wow. I have a feeling we are going to become an Evansville program down the stretch of this season because for class 3A Evansville Memorial Spang. I I'm I'm feeling something happening here at Evansville Memorial. He's won two state championships. John Hurley, actually.
Fun fact. Oh, I remember this. His first year was 2008. You want to know what happened in 2008? The Northwood Panthers were in the All all stories always lead back to Northwood. The Northwood Panthers were in the uh semi-state game against the Belmont Braves.
Belmont and Northwood 2008. It was 15° below zero up in Belmont country. Northwood and them were, I believe, tied up at 14 apiece, something like that. Northwood has four plays from the oneyd line to score. Stuffed all of them. No.
Belmont takes over on the oneyd line. You know what happens the very next play? Drive. 99 yards. A 99 yard toss sweep touchdown. Belmont had like 14 wrestlers on their team.
They go on to beat Evansville Memorial in that state championship in 2008. It's the one that got away for for Tony Miranda. Was that was that Tone on the one yard line? Tone had like 15 tackles that game, dude. He was a dog. Shout out to Anyway, sorry.
I just got kind of offkilter. No, dude. This is what we're Don't say you're sorry. This is what we're here for. We go down, we chase rabbit holes, we tell stories, we think about like uh, you know, we pontificate on the history of things, you know, like oh those stories that you're sitting around a campfire talking with your buddies. I'm really happy that you mentioned class 3A because I think it's wide open spang.
You got Evansville modern day is 3 and 0. Okay. You got Gibson Southern and Andrean two and one. You got Indian Creek. You got Tri West. Yeah.
We know when you 3A you're in a spot where you might go up there and play a five or a 6A team. And so like if you take a loss against, you know, someone who's who's a bigger school than you, that's all right. That's why if you're Tri West, like don't be don't be upset about the rights loss. Yeah. They hung 55 on you. Okay, we can get better from that.
Lick your wounds. Okay, 55 is Yeah, 55 is a lot. But like, but yeah. Yeah, you lick your wounds. It's all good. 3A is an interesting spot to be in, Spang.
There's no question about that. Moving up to 4A. Okay, dude. R 4A into 4A. Yeah, it's it's good every time. But this is the class Spang.
I am so intrigued. This is deep. I mean, we're talking six teams, I think, that can win state. We talked about was 6A before the season. six or seven teams can win the state championship but class 4A. So everyone's looking at the Chitaard Ronali game.
Ronali goes into double overtime with Dwinganger to start the season. They get right and then they have Chitard. Chitaard just continues mowing people down. They are averaging 40 points per game on offense and only giving up nine right now. They beat Lafayette Jeff 357. They beat Leo 427.
They beat Ronali 4214. And they got Cathedral this week. That's gonna be a telling game. I It's gonna be telling for both squads. Yeah. I said it's gonna be a down year.
I don't know. Like Cathedral with their schedule, their 5A, they could win like three games. Comparing apples to oranges. Yeah, they could win three games in the regular season and go to semi-state. If Chitaard beats Cathedral, that's win number 100 for our guy Rob Doyle. Oh, he's 99.
99 and 26. Doyle, man. He's going to get that. So, I am supremely impressed with Chitaard. This Danny Adams news is giving me pause. Oh, dude.
They We need our ears to the ground here on Danny Adams. Here's the thing. That guy is electric. Dude, he is a human highlight reel. And uh all I know is uh all I know is I know nothing. But I know that if he can go, he will go.
So they can win in all ways. Aerial assault. Roni was looking for aerial assault. So what I found interesting is Ronali was trying to control the game clock. So their third their final drive of the first half took nine minutes. That's like me playing NC.
So they were just trying Exactly. They were just trying to take the air out of the ball and they were moving it. They were up 147. Things were fine. And then Chitaar's like, "All right, we're tired of this, dude. I saw some plays where Cam Harden and Julio Graves just cooked some DBs back there."
Oh yeah. Uh the Gidry brothers, man. Dude, that's a lot of Jagger and Jax. Dude, that's just some That's their names. You know them too. Beefy.
Am I saying that? Gry. Okay. I was really worried. I didn't know if that was the I said that on air when he had his kickoff return and I'm like I hope this is right. Yeah, you did it.
Uh if we're also looking around All right, we're looking around for Dwinger shuts out Fort Wayne. Delta gets it done over Northeastern 2814. Decal gets it done over New Haven 2814. Boonville's 3-0 14-7 over Southridge. Danville. They're sneaky.
Danville goes uh 53 nothing over Anderson and moves to 3 and 0. They're one of those undefeated teams. Hey, this look good. Bedford North Lawrence. The Stars 4235 over Jeffersonville. Uh confirmed are the Knox report.
They are they're still figuring out their identity. Culver Academy and Knox, they play the 356 to CMA. Um, again it's like they I will say Knox went all in last year on the Miles Mclofflin show. It was incredible run. So fun to watch. Now I just again Russ identity.
I mean you have to rearrange your entire offensive strategy. Your strategy last year was hike run. Hike run. Yeah. Just let Miles Mclofflin take us to the problem. It's funny you said Belmont too because we got to get some love.
Columbia City is good. Columbia City. They hung 76 on on the Braves of Belmont. Uh, I'm really intrigued by Columbia City. Can I say is that Am I allowed to say that on this program? That is allowed.
I I am extremely interested in Columbia City. I mean, the best game though at 4A, we got to talk about Lebanon, West Lafayette. Yeah. 1413 the Tigers. I mean, Lebanon are are they the real deal? They their only loss was the Pendleton Heights.
And I got to tell you, I'm That was a track meet though, right? Yes, it was. And I'm going to keep when we get to 5A and 6A. I mean, I'm going to keep talking about Pendleton Heights. And I submitted the ask to get Pendleton Heights in the Operation Football Sunrise Kickoff system. Okay?
So, if Pendleton Heights Arabians, if you're one of the votes in the upcoming weeks, I want you to win because I've been huffing you up and I want to come out there to Arabian country and I want a sweet welcome when I get there. Yeah. The Arab Penelman Heights, they they weren't in the in the voting system. Well, so every week we just pick two and then they go headtohead and our guy kind of struggles to think of teams because like there's so many and so many ask us and you can only do so many. Some people like bow out like we were supposed to have Danville vers playingfield this last week and Planefield said ah we're out. We were supposed to have Garen Catholic and Burbuff I think both backed out.
So, they want to if they can't do it right, they don't want to do it, which I appreciate, but uh you got to just find the teams that are mixed small and are very excited about it. Well, I mean, Ben Knights is 3 and0. They're going to have Greenfield Central there. I mean, they're Pendleton Heist is good. I'm telling you guys. Okay, wait real quick.
Wrapping up 4A. Keep an eye on the Huskies of Southbend St. Joe, folks. They're 3 and 0. They beat New Prairie 46 nil. All right.
North View gets it done over Sullivan. They're also 3-0. The Knights of Northview. I love that high school. That's a cool high school. It's off that road.
I can't think of right now. It's over by Brazil. Yes. Yeah. Correct. Northridge is three and 0, folks.
The Raiders. That is Columbia City's only loss by one point to Northridge. So, and uh Mishawaka gets it done over Plymouth 20-13. So, I got to tell you, I'm I'm really intrigued by Class 4A Spang. Yep. All right, moving into 5A.
Talk to me. Well, we had our biggest margin of victory, 77 nothing Bloomington South. Yep. Um Floyd Central's I've been hearing a lot about Floyd Central. The Highlanders, they're they're 3 and0 494. Lafayette Jeff is 1 and2.
They're ranked one and two. I got to tell you, they've probably had two really tough games. One of our games of the week, Spang, and this is kind of dipping into 6A, but I don't really care. Crown Point and Maraveville, that was the region game of the week. Crown Point 23, Maraveville 14, and what I imagine was a very high level matchup right there. The fact that Marville kept that those lowish scoring, I imagine that was a barn burner.
Yeah. So, really good stuff. Marville first loss of the year, but no shame in that. Losing to Crown Point right there. Uh Evansville North beats Evansville Harrison 22 to 20. Oo yeah, it's a little cross town rivalry.
I I do want to say Pendleton Heights, you're you I am firmly watching you Pendleton Heights. Okay, I teased this last week. No longer a tease. You're in my sights. In my sights. Possible.
Yeah. State situation. We got to talk about the Minutemen. Concord. They moved two and one 48-10 over Wawa. I mean, they are.
Yeah. They're in the rankings. They're in the mix. Concord's in the mix. They're always in the mix. They are.
They're in the mix. They're You know, that reminds me of my senior year of high school classic. I knew this. Concord visited the Andrews Field. They were ranked second in class 5A. Northwood was 2 and 0.
We were feeling ourselves. Friday night, old 25 Don Miranda scores 7 nothing. Place is going nuts. We had to we had to play the rest of that game on Saturday because of lightning. No. And Concord gets it done late by 7 because somebody fumbled that we're not going to talk about, but it wasn't.
It wasn't me, but it was somebody. And if they're listening to this program, I'll probably get a text. But um So, hey dude, you'd have to bring that up. It was it was Trent, man. I mean 5A. Uh, okay.
But two weeks from now, I want you to mark your calendars and we'll see if Pton Heights is for real. For real, because they host New PAL on September 18th. Show me. Show me something. Even if you lose by 7 to 10, Pendleton Heights, I'll be like, "All right, well, maybe you should go. Maybe that should be the Operation football game.
Maybe you should be there again." Well, that that might be like the game of the That might be the nighttime game of the I But I tell these teams, I don't want your football team in the morning because you're going to blame me if you lose. Like Franklin was ranked in 5A. They lost this week to Perry Meridian because their football team was out with me in the morning probably. It's student section. Student section only.
Student section only. Give me the band and the cheerleaders in the in the student section and parents. But don't bring the football players out. Yeah, come on. We don't need the football players, but uh I mean I would go out. I would for sure go.
I thought it was a really impressive win for Planefield. Beat Moresville 2714. Um Playingfield has bounced back after that opening week uh loss. That was when Sabance went down. Our guy at Zach's wedding was telling me, you know, our guy, Coach B, when when Sabance is not playing, things are rough. That guy's really, really good.
So, um, that kind of contributed to that first loss. All right, you want to do 6A? Let's move into 6A. Just as I'm looking at you, Pendleton Heights, you know who else I'm looking at? Spang in class 6A. Let me hear it.
The Avon Orioles. Okay. Avon 3 and 0. I We have a standing invite to tailgate at Avon, by the way. Standing invite. Yeah, standing invite.
Avon has beaten Decatur Central. Ben Davis and now Hamilton Southeastern. I'm really impressed with Avon's defense in particular, only giving up eight points per game on average. Toughest test of the season by far. Avon goes to Brownsburg this week. Also, Mudsock game is this week.
Get Oh, is that Fischer's HSC? And Fischer's pretty down, unfortunately. But, uh, what have we ever figured out why they call it the Mudstock game? I I that's a great I should know this. I don't. Avon beats Hamilton South Eastern 28 to7 and they play Brownsburg.
So I want you guys to understand that you may look at Avon last season and say you know they were only 6 and5 Dom. So why are you giving huffing up Avon like you are? Especially when they play a team like Brownsburg who's really really really good. They are not going to get it done. What are you talking about you idiot? Well Avon and Brownsburg was an absolute classic barn burner a year ago.
Okay, 5547 Avon lost that game and then they ended up going six and five. That is a battle of the West Side. Avon and Brownsburg not very far from each other. Avon has now gotten into the rankings. I believe they're ranked eighth right now in class 6A. And once it turns over, they might be even higher.
Brownsburg has been skating. I mean, absolutely skating this season. Okay, they just beat Franklin Central 48-0. They've won 48-25, 3115, 48-0. Now Avon who comes in with this solid defense is going to Brownsburg. So what happens that game?
John Hart is looking for win number 100 at Brownsburg as well. Back-to-back state champions. So I don't know. That's a game that I have my eyes out for. Spang Avon and Brownsburg in class 6A. Avon very much impressing me to start this season.
Carol beat Fort Wayne and Concordia 56 to7. Oh obviously game of the week in class 6A this past week. Center Grove and Caramel absolutely lived up to the billing. Was it 3634? 3634. Center Grove gets it done.
Caramel looked really good. Special teams killed Caramel in this game. I believe they had a punt go over the head. They had a missed pat. They had some situations that they probably want back. Center Grove after losing to Warren Central has really bounced back in a strong way.
They beat Fort Wayne Carroll. They now they beat Carmel. Caramel moves to one and two, but a competitive one and two. Oh, dude. Record, forget it. Caramel has been in both game.
They lost to Westfield 38-34 and they lose to Center Grove 3634. Are you going to hold that against them that they're a combined six points away from being 3-0 and having two unbelievable wins? You got to give the love to the Center Grove Trojans, right? Absolutely. Eric Moore, man. Eric Moore knows how to win.
Carmel, you're fine. You're definitely fine. Jackson Treadway is a very good very good receiver. The Copper Kettle Trophy 3634 goes to Center Grove. Yeah. and caramel had a couple big time plays.
I mean, they have some absolute playmakers on that team, but three phases of the game, Spang. Okay, are we going to we have to talk about the Penn Kingsman getting it done over Southbend Riley? And I saw this. Okay, so one, if you tag get in sports in like clips and stuff uh when you're posting highlights, we can see that. And so I saw one that was from uh QB Films uh in and they put Buddy Hurley was a problem Friday night. Six catches, 153 yards, and two tutties.
That's crazy. Six catches, 153 yards. One, I have to say, Buddy Hurley, great name. That guy Dan Hurley potentially, right? Looks like a beast. And uh I never noticed that the pen the they wore the jerseys that say long black line on the uh on the like over the shoulders.
Kind of kind of tough. Uh 3-0 are the Kingsman. 3-0. Okay. Lastly, well, uh Westfield beats Zansville 42-7. Zansville, you were 2 and 0.
Not anymore. Uh, speak to me about this fun game. Warren Central beats North Central 4542 in what was the longest high school game ever. I don't have any stats to back that up, but it got over at 12:20. We went on air and I it was 4535 and I'm like, guys, this game is still not over. It started at 8:15 because of the heat.
Uh, some situations also happened, but there was 87 combined points and probably 87 penalties as well. So, Warren Central remains unbeaten, but I got it. Chase Grove, class of 2028 quarterback for North Central. Remember the name. Steve Wilfong works for 247. Really, really good follow.
If you don't follow him, he's based here in Indiana, I believe. He said, "Watch out for this guy." Chase Grove, 2028. One of the best one of the best QBs he's seen. That's real. Dang.
Sophomore. I mean, that's that's good. North Central's one and two, but they gave it a game. I heard it was like I heard it was penalties. I heard it was, you know, medical emergencies, like a bunch of just craziness from that. Wild wacky stuff, as Johnny Carson would say.
Wild wacky stuff. Okay, buddy. Do you have any matchups for me you like this week? And let's let's get to it real quick. I did want to talk about uh the Mudsock rivalry. Oh, I mean, absolutely.
Wh why is it called the Mudsack? Well, the name's origin. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area that is now Fisers was a swampy agricultural settlement with unpaved dirt roads. The wet, muddy ground frequently caused residents and horses to get stuck in ankle deep mud, earning the community the the nickname mudsack. Really? And the battle they also there is some lore around potentially a a saloon brawl in 1881 and the residents called it the battle of Mudsack.
Crazy. Well, Fischers is like relatively a new high school. Fishers came to be in the early 2000s or like uh maybe like late 2000s. 2006. Yeah. Okay.
So, 2006. So, they're not that old. The town has really exploded over the last like, you know. Hey, happy 20 year anniversary. Fischers High School. Yeah.
All right. And this weekend on Friday, you can you can go catch a slice of the Mudsock rivalry. All right, Spang. You ready for this? I'm going to rattle some off for you. Let's hear it.
How about Evansville Memorial and Evansville Modern Day? Just an absolute brawl that's about to happen in class 3A. Evansville Memorial ranked number one in class 3A taking on Evansville Modern Day, ranked fourth in class 3A. Is there a rivalry? Evansville Memorial, Evansville Modern Day. Look that up because I'm telling you, Evansville, we got your eyes, we got our eyes on you.
Avon and Brownsburg, like I said, I want to know if Avon's for real, okay? And playing an absolute buzzsaw like Brownsburg. You got John Hart going for his 100th career win at Brownsburg. He has almost 400 total. That guy's an absolute stud. But Evansville Memorial, Evansville Modern Day, Avon Brownsburg.
Okay, we're absolutely looking out for that one. Mishawaka and Warsaw up north. Spang. All right. Little little bit of flavor there. Then how about this 6A number 10 Fort Wayne Carroll who has had an unbelievable start to the season as far as opponents go.
They play Fort Wayne Dwanganger ranked second in 4A. So a sweet battle of Fort Wayne also. So we got a a battle in Evansville. We got a battle in Fort Wayne. We got a battle of Indy's west side. I mean, are you not excited about this?
I'm excited. I I think Okay. I think it's called the Hunger Bowl and Memorial Modern Day. Yeah, they Memorial Modern Day. Uh I think they it's at the Writes Bowl and I think they raised money for the St. Vincent Depal food pantry.
The hunger bowl. Okay. Shout out. It's the It's the the you know the the Catholic philanthropy in them. Okay. Both being, you know, private Catholic schools.
So, Okay. Fantastic. Yeah. We love We love that a little ride for good. I'm really looking forward to that. Class 3A bash right there and battle of Evansville.
And then what do you tell me what you think about the Fort Wayne Carol Fort Wayne Dwanganger? Those are that's that's offense and defense right there. Oh yeah, that is true. Cuz Dwanganger went into overtime against Roni tied at zero, remember? Yep. And then Carol, you know, their only loss is to Center Grove.
What are you gonna hold that against them? Like, come on. Come on. Uh, what other matchups do we have coming up that I mean, obviously Shitard Cathedral, but you know, we've kind of talked a lot about them this program, so we'll just say that's going to be that's going to be good football. I'm excited about that. What about anything?
Uh, what about in the region? What's the region report? Well, real quick, Center Grove and Ben Davis also play Indian Creek and Monrovia. Region report here, Spang. Hm. Well, Crown Point obviously getting it done over Marville.
So, well done, Crown Point. You're 3 and 0. They got Lake Central. Marville's got Portage this weekend. So, Marville bounce back for us a little bit. Planefield and Perry Meridian.
So, the Casting Comets are 3-0. They've beat Witco 5414, North White 45 nothing, North Miami 2814. They're going to have a big test. Are the casting comets for real? They have Pioneer this Friday night. Obviously, Pioneer is just a a perennial powerhouse.
Also 3-0. They've beat Lewis Cass 20 to5. Knox 342. So, Pioneer beats Knox 34-26. Knox is down. This gives me hope.
Does Caston have a chance? Could Gaston move to 4-0 defeat Pioneer? And and are they legit? All I'm saying is when you're 4-0, you have this program's attention. Yeah. Okay.
I mean they have my attention at 3 and0. This is casting we're talking about. Like I'm impressed. He's impressed by casting. I love it. Anything and obviously Mishiwaka Warsaw.
Got to watch out there. The Tigers are going to for like where is the how many games do you have to win in a row? Like if you go five and0 are you like you have my attention at 5-0. Okay. So we're three games and I'm we're having Rickstro back on in two weeks time. That's our mid-season report.
So yeah, I'd say if you're 5-0, 5-1, 6 and0, we're looking at you. Yeah, you you're a contender at that point. You are a contender. I don't care who you're playing. As we're closing out, Don, we have to do a few non- football stories. Yeah, absolutely.
We're going back to Evansville and we're going this is 50 years of Memorial boys soccer down in Evansville. It started in 1976 and soccer in Evansville looked a lot different then. The sport was still finding a place in the area. Indiana didn't have an IHSAA state tournament and nobody could have known exactly what Memorial Boys soccer would eventually become. 50 years later, there aren't many high school soccer programs in Indiana with a history quite like it. Really?
Oh, it's insane. So, their first state championship came in 1979, then another in 1980, and another in 1981. Three straight more championships followed after that, Dominic. 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1992. Memorial High School soccer is insane. Uh, dynasty.
But eventually, so I don't think the IHSAA started sponsoring the own tournament until way more recently. But from 2004 through 2020, Memorial Soccer has won 17 consecutive sectional championships. Still the longest streak in Indiana boys soccer history. From 2004 to 2010, the Tigers won seven straight regional championships. Also an Yep. an Indiana record.
Then, wow, this is wild. Then there was 2007. I got a a spectacular like press release style email about this. That's insane. Uh 2007, the team finished 23 and0 in two ties. Uh won Memorial's first IHSAA state championship and was ranked number one in the nation.
Whoa. Uh, a year later they went 23 and zero and two again and won another state championships. This is insane. Okay, so not only is Evansville Memorial a rich history in football, can we talk about this? But they're a rich history in football. Uh, good good call.
Uh, Memorial won consecutive state championships again in 2016 and 2017 and another pair 2019. So, how many total state championships have they won? That's the answer I need from you right now. Evansville Memorial is ranked number one in class 3A in football. They got an unbelievable matchup with Evansville Modern Day and what I'm being told is called the Hungerbowl. Yes.
From Mr. Nate Spangle. But not only that, they have one of the most successful boys soccer programs in the nation. I'm saying definitely in the in the state of Indiana, but possibly the nation. How many state championships has Evansville Memorial Boys soccer won? All right.
To get to the state championships, you have to start with sectional championships and then we have to work our way up. 17 in a row, I heard. I mean, they had 17 in a row. They've won 40 sectional championships, 13 semi-state championships, three three state runnerup finishes, 17 state titles, 17 state titles. Been in the state championship game 20 times and won 17 of them. It's a pretty good percentage, dude.
I'm pretty sure this coach, Hall of Fame coach Bill Ve, apologies if I'm not saying his name right. I mean, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in ' 06. I think he's still the head coach. Isn't that insane? I think that's pretty wild, Spang. That's dope.
Hey, you know what? Thank you, Spangle, for telling us about Evansville Memorial Soccer. And I'm very pleased that we got a lot of Evansville uh football talk and football talk on this program. So, why don't we finish this out with Spangle and then we'll talk a little uh college football. But, you know what? You know what I'm going to ask you to do?
I'm going to ask you to play the mascot. We got to play the mascot game. I've been doing pretty well. I I will say Spangle's been saying it in our like our friend group message or college group message and he he is like first tier and then I'm a tier below and then everyone else. How well do you know Indian High School mascots? We're going to start with R.
Nelson Snider. So Fort Wayne Snder. Fort Wayne Snder. I think it's Roy Nelson Snyder. Is it the Mustangs? No.
Panthers. Oh wow. Just absolutely brutal. Okay. Jeez. Uh, Short Ridge.
Short Ridge here in Indianapolis. Dude, if you've driven on I think it's Meridian Street. They're like right there. It's that high school. I know. Yeah.
Are they the Panthers? Blue Devils. Wow. We're tough today. Greensburg. Uh, AR maybe Pirates.
There you go. Thank you. I needed some assistance. Come on. Oh, Columbus Signature Academy, New Tech High School in Bartholomew County. Well, if it only wasn't a mouthful.
Columbus Signature Academy, New Tech High School. I'm just going to go Cougars or something. I got nothing. I'm going to say the Penguins. Shut up. Dragons.
Dang it. One of them is Penguins. No way. Casting junior senior high school. I did not I did not plan this. Casting comments.
They come up. That's how you know we're talking about the right stuff. Yeah. Enrollment. Guess the enrollment of Casten High School. 2015.
Red, royal blue, and white. See the results. Share the results. Got to go in the friend group. Come on. Okay, so that's Indiana High School mascots.
Uh we're gonna get Spangle out of here. Yep. And I gota It It was a pleasure, Dom. Uh congratulations, I'd say, to won the 65 teams that are still undefeated. I have to say congratulations to Memorial Soccer, 50 years. Coach Bill Ve, he's been, and apologies if I'm pronouncing that wrong.
I will say, apologies if it's pronounced wrong. Hey, reach out to us. I mean, he's been an absolute legend in the community as Memorial Soccer celebrates its 50th anniversary. Games to watch, refresh, Evansville Memorial, Evansville Modern Day, Cathedral Chitaard, Avon Brownsburg. All right. Always great talking to Nate Spangle just about high school football in the great state of Indiana. Let's run through college football results. First off the top of the head here, obviously IU, the sixth ranked Hoosiers getting it done 5216 over North Texas. I thought Josh Hoover looked really good. I thought his efficiency was there. I think he only incomp completed like three passes.
Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh are going to be just phenomenal weapons for this season. Turbo Rashard, one of the best names in college football, really had a nice game. Thought the defense kind of got used to themselves there as the game went on. Obviously, North Texas kind of a get right situation there. Week one, got Howard coming up. Okay, so IU is going to have a couple weeks to get this thing rolling, but I thought the offense looked really, really nice, really efficient.
It was a great environment in Bloomington on Saturday. They unveiled the the sign there, 2025 national champions in the end zone. Got the bison coming down from the scoreboard on like a kind of like a zipline situation. It was really really cool stuff there. And I thought Josh Hoover performed well. The the one-handed catch from Nick Marsh in the end zone was absolutely electric.
It's why you're paying that guy all that money. But really nice win for for IU. Okay. And then you got Notre Dame beating Wisconsin 4113. Obviously the first half was tricky for the Irish. But look, you got to let CJ Carr spin the football.
Okay. This dink dunk BS that Notre Dame rolled out against Miami first game last year. I mean, you got a guy who's the odds on favorite to win the Heisman. you got to let him spin that thing. So, I don't know if what's going to have to happen in the wide receiver room and the skill position room for Notre Dame to feel comfortable doing that, but I think that's going to be the biggest talking point going into next week's game against Rice and just as the Irish go along this early part of the season when they got guys like Purdue and Michigan State, okay, and and teams like that as they kind of just gradually get into this season is who's going to emerge from that wide receiver skill position right now? Because Jordan Faison's great.
Okay, he had 80 yards receiving. Okay, but is Milin Graham, the Ohio State transfer, going to step up? Okay, is is uh Flanigan, the tight end, going to be a pass catching option? Okay, who who's going to step up in that room right now? Because I mean, you got freshman, you got guys like Devin Fitzgerald. Okay, you got Cam Williams who we've been waiting on for a while.
All right, so I don't know. Is Quincy Porter going to be healthy? the the skill position players are something you got to keep your eyes on with Notre Dame because if they are their best offense on Sunday night was throwing the ball downfield and they didn't do much of that until the second half and I don't know if guys aren't creating separation. I don't know if this offensive if Mike Denrock's just looking as personnel. It's something to keep an eye on because I thought they played a Bminus game and they still won 4113. This defense is absolutely unbelievable.
Leonard Moore is unbelievable. Okay, the defensive line depth is crazy. I mean, you got Bryce Young in there, you got Keon Keel, you got Francis Brew, got on who went down. Uh, Mukum. Okay. KVA didn't even play.
Kingston Billy Villamuasa didn't even play. Drake Bowen from Andrean, absolute stud at the linebacker position. Was absolutely hitting people. Um, I thought it was a really, really well played game, especially in the second half, but certainly some critiques, too. If you're talking about Notre Dame, Purdue getting it done over Indiana State. I know a lot of Boilers fans were not pleased with how that game went.
We'll see how Purdue does as the season presses on here. They host Wake Forest at noon on the weekend on Saturday. IU welcomes in Howard and Notre Dame is going to play at home against Rice. Smaller college results. Okay, Marian gets it done over Defiance 53 to0. That's going to make you feel a lot better after falling to U Indie in the monumental matchup by a lot.
53-0 Marin gets it done over Defiance. Some individual stat lines here. Ben Shuster the quarterback 195 yards, two touchdowns. Alex Luggers just three carries but 86 yards and a touchdown. 28. 7 average right there.
So that's really good stuff. How about we look at Butler? They did they went to Montana State defending FCS champs. went out to I think it's Bosezeman. Bosezeman or Missoula. I forget which is which.
Montana. Montana State. But they lose 51-24. And honestly, I'm okay with that. If you're Butler, go to Montana State. You put up 24 points.
I don't hate it at all. Come back, play Franklin, play Chicago State, play Valpo, start getting in the rhythm of the Pioneer League here. And you know what? I'm I'm excited about Butler what they can do. Okay, they got some playmakers on that team. 51-24, they fall to Montana State.
No shame in that. UNDY kind of a surprising result here. Indie falling to Finley 30-10. And I'm I'm almost positive that Finley is a ranked team, is a team that makes the Division 2 football playoffs more often than not. Let's give it a look here. d2OB.
com rankings. So, what I'm seeing is Finley is ranked 12th. UND falling out after that loss. I don't know if that's accurate, but Finley is a good team. Okay. Finley is a team that's ranked consistently.
Finley is a team that is in the conference that I believe UN Indie is joining after the conclusion of this season. So, no shame in it. Maybe a little bit of a wakeup call right there. Uh it was at home 30 to10 Finley beats U Indie. So, kind of an interesting game right there. Results, something to keep your eye on.
Here was an in-state battle in division three football. Dep 31, Rose Holman 23. Really interesting right there. Okay, so Depa ranked 13th in division three football getting it done in a close one over Rose Holman 31-23. Scott Ballentine threw for 167 yards and a touchdown and uh how about Carson Johnson for Dep 20 carries 148 yards. That'll play that'll play just fine.
I did want to mention trying football as well getting it done over the University of Chicago 48-34. So the Try Thunder are 1 and0. They got Illinois Wesleian in Bloomington, Illinois next week. So there's a bit of a little bit of a college recap for you. I know I'm probably missing some teams, but anyone you think we should look out for? Any non-foot sports in the college ranks, too, like a really good volleyball program or really good program that we're not looking at just as far as an off sport, please let us know.
We want to definitely give you the shout that you need. Wrapping up here, obviously Colts welcome in the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday. First game for the Indianapolis Colts. Who knows what to expect, but it's going to be a challenging game. There's no question about it. I think the depth has been called into question for the Colts.
Um some interesting cuts there on the defensive side of the football. Who's going to be playing linebacker, Dline? Who's going to be playing secondary? Who's rotating in? Is it Holy? Is it Wler?
Who are the linebackers? Is it Betcher? Is it Allen? Is it a GK? Is it Davis Gaither? Who is going to be the main stays at the linebacker and one safety position?
I think that's something to keep an eye out for. I think Justin Wallally is going to have a really nice game and a really nice season. What is this offense look like? How healthy is Alec Pierce? Is it a hefty dose of downs? Is it a hefty dose of Tyler Warren?
Are we handing the ball off a lot? How's the right side of that line going to look? A lot of question marks with this Colts team. And it doesn't get easy that first game of the season against the Baltimore Ravens. Let's see how the boys in blue look this Sunday. Hey, it's game one of the NFL regular season for the Colts.
A consequential one at that. But this has been a great show. Talking high school ball, talking college ball, talking Evansville Memorial Soccer. Oh, by the way, we did our mascots and we're talking about the Indianapolis Colts. We'll hit you on Friday. We got a interview coming out with Jim Insep, athletic director of Caramel, and we have Lawrence Central principal Franklin Bush talking about the 30-year anniversary of the Mick Conference.
