Two Kitchens, One Community: The Story Behind L Street and Punjabi Rasoi
Sometimes the best things begin with a simple idea.
When Harpreet and Lucky first came to South Bend, their plan was modest: find a place to launch a small to-go food service. While searching for the right spot, they connected with the owner of L Street, who mentioned that the restaurant space sat empty in the evenings after the breakfast and lunch crowds had gone home.
The owner suggested they try operating there in the evenings to see how it worked.
So they did.
What followed was more than they expected.
“The response from the South Bend community was incredibly welcoming and supportive,” Harpreet shared. “Seeing how much people enjoyed the food encouraged us to take the next step. It also gave us the confidence to work toward fulfilling my husband’s dream of opening a restaurant one day.”
That dream became Punjabi Rasoi.
Lucky, the chef behind the restaurant, has always had a passion for cooking and sharing authentic Indian flavors. Opening a restaurant had long been his goal, and Punjabi Rasoi gave him the opportunity to bring that vision to life while becoming part of the L Street community.
Now the journey has entered its next chapter.
When the longtime owner of L Street decided to retire, Harpreet and Lucky saw an opportunity. Their Indian restaurant had already been operating in the space during evening hours as an incubator concept, and they were also looking for a permanent home for Punjabi Rasoi.
Taking over L Street felt like the natural next step.
“The owner of L Street was retiring, and at the same time we were looking for a permanent spot for our Indian restaurant,” Harpreet explained. “Taking over L Street felt like the perfect opportunity — it allowed us to continue serving our South Bend community, learn a new cuisine, and make this place our home.”
For the past eight to nine months, they’ve been working to carry that vision forward.
For longtime L Street fans, the good news is that the heart of the restaurant will remain the same. L Street will continue serving its beloved American breakfast and lunch during the day, while Punjabi Rasoi will offer authentic Indian cuisine in the evenings.
Rather than competing concepts, the two restaurants are designed to complement each other.
“L Street will continue serving the same American favorites during the day, while Punjabi Rasoi will offer authentic Indian cuisine in the evening,” Harpreet said. “This allows customers to enjoy two different dining experiences in the same place.”
Menus, signage, and service style will help keep the distinction clear while still allowing guests to enjoy the unique experience of two cuisines under one roof.
A few small improvements may appear over time — updated silverware, team members growing into new roles, and possibly outdoor seating in the summer so guests can enjoy meals outside. But the overall goal is simple: keep everything people already love while making the experience even better.
For Harpreet, the most rewarding part of opening a restaurant isn’t the business side of things — it’s the people.
“My favorite part about opening a restaurant is seeing people enjoy the food we make with love and passion,” she said. “I love sharing authentic flavors, creating a welcoming atmosphere, and watching our team work together to make every guest feel cared for. When people leave happy, satisfied, and smiling, that’s the most rewarding part of it all.”
Of course, opening a restaurant also comes with its challenges. From organizing and equipping the kitchen to designing menus, hiring staff, and making sure everything runs smoothly day to day, there are countless moving pieces to manage.
Still, the support from the South Bend community has made it worthwhile.
Looking ahead to 2026, Harpreet and Lucky hope both restaurants continue to grow as places people in the community truly love — spaces where families gather, friends meet, and guests feel welcome.
They also hope to expand their catering services, allowing both restaurants to serve community events, meetings, and celebrations. With two cuisines under one roof, the goal is to offer more options while continuing to build a place people trust and enjoy returning to again and again.
And as they look toward the future, they shared a message directly to the people of South Bend:

Our goal is simple: to create a place where families and friends can enjoy delicious food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for a hearty breakfast, a flavorful Indian dinner, or catering for a special occasion, we want every visit to feel special.
Thank you for welcoming us into South Bend and allowing us to share our passion and love for food with you. We look forward to serving you and growing together as part of this amazing community.
