Harland “Colonel” Sanders Is Born in Henryville (1890)

This week in Indiana history, we are talking about Harland Sanders, the founder and creator of the fast food chicken restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Yes, the founder of KFC actually grew up a Hoosier. His father died when he was young, so he learned how to cook out of necessity when he stepped up in the kitchen to feed his younger siblings. 

Business success was not instant… Sanders spent decades working grueling jobs in southern Indiana and failed at many different businesses. It wasn’t until he reached his 50s that his 11 herbs and spices recipe turned Kentucky Fried Chicken into one of the most recognizable food brands in the world. 

Not only did the restaurant become globally known, but Sanders himself became its most recognizable spokesperson and brand ambassador, donning a white coat and appearing in many commercials for the restaurant, where he was affectionately known as “Colonel” Sanders to this day.

Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, is the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of 2,977 innocent victims, including nine Hoosiers. September Is Hunger Action Month

Take action to end hunger in the United States this September during Hunger Action Month. According to data recently released by Feeding America, 163,870 people in Marion County (nearly 17% of the population) faced food insecurity. The Alexander, Autograph Collection in Indianapolis (333 S. Delaware St.) is hosting a canned food drive benefiting Second Helpings, a community kitchen and nonprofit in Indianapolis that fights hunger and food waste.

Canned food donations can be made at The Alexander through Sunday, Sept. 13. Plus, there’s a special cocktail exclusively available to those who donate. After dropping off donations, guests will receive a ticket they can take to Plat 99 to redeem for a Second Chance Sour, a cocktail inspired by a New York Sour with an Indiana twist.

Week 3 of Indiana high school football featured two matchups of top five teams - #4 Center Grove vs. #5 Carmel in 6A and #3 Indianapolis Bishop Chatard vs. #5 Roncalli in 4A.

The Center Grove-Carmel meeting was their first on the gridiron since 2022, and it lived up to the billing with CG prevailing 36-34. The Trojans led 21-20 at halftime and 33-20 after three quarters of play but needed a two-point conversion stop with one minute remaining to prevent the Greyhounds from tying the game. (WTHR)

In the 4A bout, Bishop Chatard scored 35 unanswered points, including 28 in the second half, to put away Roncalli 42-14. Trojans wideout Cam Harden hauled in three touchdown receptions. The Trojans beat the Royals in the regular season last fall, but Roncalli had the last laugh with a big win in the sectional final. Don’t be surprised if these two teams meet again later this fall. 🎧 Why 1 in 7 Hoosiers Are Food Insecure  🎧

🎙 On today's show I sat down with Fred Glass, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and former Indiana University athletic director and government leader, about how growing up in his father's Indianapolis tavern shaped his empathy and perspective.

Glass looks back on the turning points of his career, including DC internships with Birch Bayh, law and clerkship decisions, serving in Governor Evan Bayh's office, leading the Capital Improvement Board through efforts that helped secure Lucas Oil Stadium and convention center expansion, and helping Indianapolis win a Super Bowl bid.

He also describes rebuilding the culture and facilities of IU Athletics and the difficult decisions of firing coaches.

Now at Gleaners, Glass explains the organization's large-scale food distribution model, its nationwide reach, and argues food insecurity is driven by poverty, rising housing and grocery costs, stagnant wages, and declining support. He urges volunteering and donations to help address hunger affecting about one million Hoosiers.
