Southern Indiana’s New Adventure: The Monon South Trail
Southern Indiana is about to get a whole lot more exciting, thanks to the upcoming Monon South Trail. Stretching 57.9 miles from Bedford to New Albany, this trail is set to become the region’s go-to spot for outdoor adventure and community connection.

The trail will be almost 60 miles long (Monon South)
The History Behind the Trail
To understand the significance of the Monon South Trail, we have to look at its past. The Monon Railroad once ran from Chicago to Louisville, helping shape the region. After the tracks were abandoned, they’ve been transformed into something truly special, a trail connecting communities and offering a new way to explore southern Indiana’s beauty.
What’s Coming
The Monon South Trail offers a chance to experience southern Indiana like never before. Imagine walking, running, or biking through farmland, scenic vistas, and charming towns. The trail will wind through eight communities (Mitchell, Orleans, Leipsic, Saltillo, Campbellsburg, Salem, New Pekin and Borden) offering easy access to outdoor adventure for residents and visitors alike.

Why You Should Be Excited
This trail is more than just a new way to get outside, it’s an economic game-changer! The Monon South Trail will boost local businesses, attract visitors, and create opportunities for small towns to thrive. Plus, connecting this trail to other regional paths will expand the network for outdoor exploration across southern Indiana. The health benefits are significant, too, encouraging physical activity, mental well-being, and bringing people together.
What’s Next
Construction is underway, with the first phase of approximately 20 miles already open! Thanks to funding from the READI program, Radius Indiana, and Next Level Trails, the Monon South Trail is well on its way. The total estimated cost of $70 million shows just how much potential this project has. Stay updated on progress through the Monon South Trail Facebook page and public meetings.
