A Historic Treasure

Designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1957, The Miller House was commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife, Xenia. Located at 2860 Washington St., the house was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2000, and it’s easy to see why. The design showcases the combined talents of Saarinen, interior designer Alexander Girard and landscape architect Dan Kiley, making it one of the most significant residential examples of modernism in the United States.

As you approach the house, you’ll notice how it blends seamlessly with its surroundings. The landscape, designed by Kiley, is just as much a part of the experience as the house itself. The property spans 13.5 acres and is designed to feel open and airy, with a series of outdoor rooms that extend the design principles of the house into nature.

The Tour Experience

Taking a guided tour of The Miller House is like stepping into the past while simultaneously experiencing the future of architecture. Tours are approximately 90 minutes long and begin at the Columbus Area Visitors Center. From there, guests are transported to the house for an up-close look at its design and history. For just $30 per person, the tour gives you a chance to explore not only the architecture but also the design choices that made the Miller House so groundbreaking.

Interior Design and Features

The interior of the Miller House is just as stunning as the exterior. Girard’s influence is evident in the furnishings, textiles and color choices that bring warmth and personality to the sleek modern design. The 50-foot long storage wall, for example, cleverly hides clutter while displaying the Millers' eclectic collection of objects from around the world. A focal point of the living space, the conversation pit, eliminates the need for traditional, bulky seating, making the room feel both spacious and intimate.

Its combination of architectural brilliance, thoughtful interior design, and carefully crafted landscape make it a true hidden gem in Indiana.
