Building Homes, Building Legacy: The History of J.C. Hart Company

Building Homes, Building Legacy: The History of J.C. Hart Company

Discover how J.C. Hart Company grew from a local homebuilder into one of Indiana’s premier multifamily developers — building homes and a Hoosier legacy since 1976.

Since the mid-1970s, the J.C. Hart Company has used vision and adaptation to become one of Indiana’s premier multifamily developers.

Founding the John C. Hart Company

Prior to his founding of the John C. Hart Company, John C. Hart, Sr. had already become a prominent homebuilder in the Indianapolis area. Over the course of his career, he was responsible for over 10,000 housing units beginning in the early 1950s. As the real estate landscape evolved, John Sr. diversified his portfolio with mixed-use projects and apartment development.

In 1976, John Sr. and his son John C. Hart, Jr. created the John C. Hart Company, Inc. as the management arm for the Hart family’s growing development business, Hart Development Corporation. Over time, the business focus sharpened around multifamily housing and property management.

Shift to Multifamily Apartments

By the 1980s, J.C. Hart had begun to zero in on niche opportunities in the upscale apartment rental market. The company wanted to separate from its competitors by not only developing apartments, but by delivering quality management and superior living experiences. This commitment became a cornerstone of the firm’s brand identity: “Make your home an enjoyable living experience.”

When John Jr. acquired his father’s interest in 1982, he rebranded the business under the name J.C. Hart Company, Inc. Under his leadership, the company expanded its footprint across central Indiana, focusing on luxury apartment communities with exceptional amenities and design.

Growth, Strategy, and Culture

A defining feature of J.C. Hart’s strategy has been its emphasis on core values and long-term vision. The company adopted core values of Passion, Integrity, Development, Innovation, and Teamwork as guiding principles. Its big hairy audacious goal (BHAG) is to deliver enjoyable living experiences in 12,000 J.C. Hart homes by December 31, 2025.

To support that growth, J.C. Hart delivers from start to finish in the development and construction of properties, followed by management of that property. Its construction arm emphasizes high standards, collaboration, and cost-effective execution without sacrificing quality.

Recent Projects and Awards

J.C. Hart remains active in acquisitions and new development. In 2018, the company acquired The Flats at Switch in Fishers and launched a 257-unit project in the Harmony mixed-use development at 146th Street and Ditch Road in Westfield. It also secured land in Broad Ripple to develop The Line – Urban Flats on the Monon, transforming a former pool site into a luxury apartment community.

J.C. Hart also has gained industry recognition. The company won the Indiana Apartment Association’s “Property Management Company of the Year” in 2009, 2014 and 2022, and has earned four IAA Prodigy Awards for floor plans, curb appeal, and best clubhouse/leasing office.

On top of that, J.C. Hart has proven to be a great place to work for Hoosiers. It has been recognized on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s listing for “Best Places to Work” 12 times since 2009.

Vision Leads to Impact

Today, J.C. Hart stands as a home-grown success story. Once focused on single-family homebuilding, J.C. Hart evolved with the real estate market to become a multifamily firm. As it pursues its 12,000-home goal by the end of 2025, J.C. Hart continues to provide places people are proud to call home.
