Sport

Hinkle Fieldhouse is the sixth oldest college basketball arena still in use. Hinkle Fieldhouse is sometimes referred to as "Indiana's Basketball Cathedral."

Hinkle History

In the heart of Indianapolis on Butler University's campus, Hinkle Fieldhouse is a monumental testament to basketball's rich heritage. Constructed in 1928, it was originally known as Butler Fieldhouse and, with a seating capacity of 15,000, held the title of the largest basketball arena in the United States until 1950. In 1966 the arena was renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse to honor Paul D. "Tony" Hinkle, Butler's esteemed coach and athletic director. Beyond its primary role as the home court for Butler's basketball and volleyball teams, Hinkle Fieldhouse has hosted a myriad of events, from presidential speeches to concerts and circuses, reflecting its versatility and significance in the community. You may also recognize the court as the site of the championship game in the popular movie “Hoosiers.”

Staying On The Map

Today, Hinkle Fieldhouse continues to be a vibrant hub of activity. In 2025, it will proudly host the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) semifinals on March 31 and the championship game on April 2. This marks the second consecutive year that Indianapolis welcomes the WBIT finals, highlighting the city's commitment to women's collegiate basketball.

Furthermore, the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) semifinals and championship games are set to take place at Hinkle Fieldhouse on April 1 and April 3. Butler University, in collaboration with the Indiana Sports Corporation, serves as the host for these prestigious events, drawing basketball enthusiasts from across the nation.

Plan A Visit

For those seeking a unique experience into basketball history and live sporting excitement, a visit to Hinkle Fieldhouse is unparalleled. The arena's storied past, combined with its ongoing role in hosting significant tournaments, offers a unique blend of nostalgia and contemporary athleticism. Whether you're a die-hard basketball fan or simply appreciate historic landmarks, Hinkle Fieldhouse promises an unforgettable experience.
