Space to Grow
Located in Jasper County, Indiana, Fair Oaks Farm opened in 2004, intending to share its dairy farming practices with total transparency. Since then, they have expanded to share other parts of the agricultural world. They now have three farm adventures, orchards and farm-to-table restaurants to enjoy. Come for the day or stay for the weekend in the farm-themed hotel. You can even book a room in a silo!
The Dairy Adventure
In this museum, you will learn how a dairy farm functions. The interactive exhibits cover everything from the care of the cows to manure management. Little ones will enjoy the play areas, 4-D movie experience, and can even try attaching a milking apparatus to a fake cow. Adults can play trivia and speak to real farmers about their experience in the agriculture world. Be sure to check out the birthing center for a chance to see a newborn calf!
The Pork Education Center
Did you know Indiana is one of the top 5 pork-producing states in America? In the education center, you can learn how pork feeds the US and the world. You can also receive pork recipes and cooking tips. Even more interesting, you can see how pork helps human health in the medical industry. The space also has a three-story ropes course where pigs can fly!
The Crop Adventure Museum
Last but certainly not least is the crop adventure museum. Farmers are finding innovative ways to feed the world’s continuously growing population. Head underground and see how a seed becomes a harvestable product. Step back in time and see how far farming has come over the last several decades. Peek into the future and see new technology helping farmers worldwide improve their farms.
Farm to Table
You’ve learned all about the farm and now it's time to eat. Fair Oaks has three dining options stocked full of delicious food from Fair Oaks and other local farms. The Dairycatessen is a great grab-and-go option for fresh sandwiches and salads from the farm. The Cowfé makes a mean grilled cheese sandwich and offers ice cream. The Farmhouse is a sit-down restaurant with an atmosphere that makes you want to linger for a while. The menu has an impressive list of steaks and all the classics like fried chicken and pork tenderloin.
Weekend Ag-Venture
Farming families make up less than 2% of the population in the United States. Now more than ever, it is so important to support farmers and understand how they work to feed the rest of the population. This hidden gem gives a small peak into the agricultural world in a unique and fun way for the family. Spending a weekend or even a day at Fair Oaks Farm will give you a renewed appreciation for the American farmer.
