What a pleasure to have you back in studio. Uh we're we're going to talk about Trade Upfest. Of course, you'll be playing at Trade Up Fest. We'll get into that. Uh but first, we like to talk about the weekends.
Couple of weekends because we didn't record last week. So, I mean, if you want to fill in some highlights, I think we got a couple a few. You want to start? I'll start with this prior week. You know, just this one.
You can take the this past weekend. Okay. You take the two weeks. I'll take that. Two weeks in two weekends ago, my birthday.
Yeah. Go ahead. So Cecil and I uh played Porchfest. Porchfest. Did you you played as well?
Yeah, we played at the same time. Yeah. So that's why we didn't That's why none of our friends were there. They were all watching her. No, that's they all uh so that was a good time.
Just it was like a throwback. It was just you and me. Just how we started. Um and then that night I played at Federal Hill at the uh the Billy Joel tribute show. Wow.
Wait, what did you what did you do? I played keys and guitar and I busted out the accordion. Yes. Yeah. Played accordion for the first time.
What song did you play accordion on? Piano man. Okay. Yeah. Not keys on piano man.
Okay. No. No. There's a real piano player doing that stuff. My dad got um so it was great, man.
Big crowd. I was so happy that it could go off um as planned because you think like what two weeks prior to that it was underwater. Yeah. Like legitimately underwater. The stage was underwater.
Yeah. So I know they lost a lot of equipment and expensed a lot of time and energy and money getting it back going again. So very happy. Good to see that. And I will say too while we're on that subject, is it this weekend or next weekend out at Federal Hill?
They're doing a flood relief concert. It's the fifth. It's this weekend. It's this weekend. Okay.
So, flood relief concert, Flying Toasters, and I can't remember the other band that's going to be there. Um, but just raising some money, raising some funds for uh people that have been affected by the flood have been Oh man, the TV turned off. Oh, well. Um, yeah. So, make sure you get out for that if you can.
But sounds like it was a great Yeah, it was good. Good weekend. Good. Best weekend in Noblesville all year. I agree.

Sunrise. Uh down at Federal Hill. So, come help support those who have been affected by the floods here in Noblesville. There's still a lot of cleanup going on for a lot of these folks. So, um yeah, it was great.
Great weekend. How many people do you think were there? I I I heard 10 or 20,000. Who'd you hear that from? I was just a guess.
He heard it from the voice inside his own head. No, say 10,000. They were saying 1 to 2,000. No, way more than that. At Wait, where?
Where? At uh Porchfest. Oh, you're talking about Federal Hill. Yeah. Oh, sorry.
No, no, I was talking about 20,000 people. Can you imagine 10 to 20,000 people in Federal Hill? Like, where would they even sit? Where would they go? It was a mess on the bridge.
They were sitting on the stage with us. Uh, so based on some AI pictures, it looks like four to 600 in front of each porch. Uh, AI pictures. Do we not have real pictures? There were drones that were taken.
No. Yeah, they take an over overhead shot and they ask AI to estimate. Can you not ask a human being just like Yeah, find a neurode divergent kid. Don't knock that out. I'm not kidding.
We use AI for too much. I don't like it. Uh, so about 1,200 to 3,000 each hour. So, what is that? 7 hours, 6 hours, 6 hours times three.
Let's say ask 12,000. No, don't don't ask AI. People need to start using their own brains. Listen, come on. I'm going to need you to get on board.
No. Oh, no. Oh, I'm anti- AI. Okay. I didn't want to I didn't want to bring it up on the podcast.

Okay. Yeah. He was asking about Fousey. There was a lot of medium people there. He was there to see Fousey.
No, we we were talking about Fousey. I forget how Fousey came up. um because he's one he's performing at trade-up fest too and uh he recognized the name but I don't think he got to see at trees. What is trice? Tell tell the folks.
Trice is the uh premier hiphop festival in the Midwest premier in the Midwest. In the Midwest and it's been going on for 12 years. Oh, okay. Which is pretty remarkable for a festival to last that long. That's right.
It's kind of independent and and based primarily here locally. Love that. Yeah. Yeah. Can you get them to schedule it on a different weekend next year, please?
I' I've been I've been Yeah. It really only affects a very small amount of people, but but we're important. Yeah. And loud. We got a podcast.
We got a podcast. Um I was going to ask you, uh what did you do there? Uh I was primarily in charge of vendor load in and load out. Uh opening up the the footprint of the festival to allow cars in for for vendors to load in and then doing the reverse in the in the evening and then in the middle I was just kind of floating around and filling in wherever I needed to be. Okay.
A floater if you will. Mhm. Okay. Hey, speak And you did this as a volunteer. Yes.

Yeah. It's like, well, you make it McDonald's or whatever. No, you don't. But you should. That's way above minimum wage.
You could have paid him 750, I think. 725, I think. Yeah. To be fair, I tried to get AI to do it first and they can't do it. I know there are limitations.
Couldn't do it. So, the boys were out there uh getting people signed up for the contest. That was fun. Um, highlight for me on that, by the way, Django. Did you get a chance to see Jango night?
No. Oh my gosh. So, he played on Chris's porch. Unbelievable. Like crazy good bluesy guitar player.
He did. So, his house got flooded in the flood. Um, and I think he I don't know what all he lost, but um was affected by the flood. Didn't wasn't able to play his guitar for a couple weeks leading up to Porchfest, but he played a version of so he's like talking about this, right? And he starts going into a version of Imagine um by John Lennin, but it's like this soulful bluesy version is so good, man.
Like got a standing ovation afterwards like wow nice. Oh, dang. So he plays around I don't know, the Midwest, around the country. Um, plays at the Slippery Noodle a lot. So, it was it was really good.
Uh, but the prior weekend, my birthday weekend, we went to Willie Nelson Outlaw Country Music Festival. Um, a group of us went out there. So, it was Steven Wilson Jr., which is kind of why we went. Yeah. But I also went for the Avet brothers.
You did not. You didn't care for the Avet brothers. You don't care for the Avat brothers. That seems right up your alley. I like the AA brothers.
He didn't like them live. Oh, interesting. The word cac was used to describe their sound. Caffeus. That's not how you pronounce that.
Oh, then I mispronounced it. I'm sure you pronounced right. That's the word he used. Cacophony. Cacophony.
Correct. Cacophony. Cacophus. That's what I said. Cacophinus.
Abit brothers and Lucas Nelson stole the show for me. I don't know about you guys. Same. It was great. Um, I didn't realize how much I liked Lucas Nelson.
And then Willie came out and I'll tell you what, he is 93 years old, but he looks every bit of 212 years old. 93. Oh my god. Uh Chris, you said they they drove him to his spot on stage in a golf cart. Is that correct?
Cuz there was like a video package playing before he came on. Oh, so he doesn't even walk onto stage anymore. Well, no, he can't. He's 93. Yeah, fine.
Let the guy do that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You can take a break also, Willie.
You can just chill him out. Yeah. Well, we were talking about that like there's one of two scenarios at play here. One is his family and friends are saying, "Hey, I think we could probably make some money if we go on the road. Willie, do you want to go on the road?" And he's like, "Oh, or you know, he was what?
He's been doing this for 70 years probably or more, like constantly on the road. So, it's probably like, well, what else am I going to do?" Yeah. Go home and Well, he's with his sons, too, you know. So, I mean, that's probably really cool for him to take the stage with his sons or Yeah. Yeah.
So, I bet he enjoys it and it's like all he knows. Yeah. But I will say this, he sounded good. He could still sing. Yeah.
Um his first song they came out and so they're doing like basically an acoustic set. Yeah. um with like a a guy just playing a snare and I think it was a harmonica player, maybe some other acoustic type instruments. Um first song comes out and they all start playing and Willie singing. I don't even remember what the song was, but Willie starts to play to bless his heart.
I don't know what key the song was in, but he was playing a G chord that did not sound like a G chord, nor did it fit the song. It was just like Cecil looked over at me. We looked at each other. He goes, "Uhoh." Whoops. It was just like the arthritis.
He had to warm up the hand, you know? Yeah. After that, he was on. Yeah, he did. Yeah.
Yeah. It's like that woke him up or I I don't know what happened, but man, that first song I thought, "Oh, no. If this if it's going to be like this, like just mute his guitar, right? Right. Let everybody else do the heavy lifting.
But yeah, he he got warmed up and everything else was really good after that. Yeah. And who uh who played first? The mandolin player. Sierra Hull.
Sierra Hull. Actually, Don W. Oh, yeah. They played first. Opened up.
Don and the Detroit something or other Pistons. Yes. Yes. I forgot. The Detroit Thomas on Bongos.
Don Was and the Pan Detroit Ensemble. There it is. But I do think the Pistons were in there somewhere. I feel like I saw Bill Lambir lurking in the chat. He kept fouling the trumpet player for reasons I don't understand.
No easy points trumpet player. Uh Bill Lambir. My goodness. Um yeah, so that was that was fun. That was a good birthday.
Yeah. Nice little tailgating before was nice. VIP parking is the way to go. Wow, you're sweet. You know, that's how they get you.
That's how they get you because you basically have to if you want to have an enjoyable evening. If you want to get out before midnight. Yeah. Oh, it's rough. What about your weekend?
Um, well, I played Porchfest. It was awesome. First time playing with my full band. I was going to ask you. Okay.
My I've said this at Porchfest and on social media, but um my first ever solo gig was the first front porchfest in 2021. I had played with like duos or trios or whatever and my duo partner after co had decided she didn't want to play anymore and I wanted to play still and I got approached and asked to do Porchfest and I thought I can do that by myself, right? like I can do that and I did and it was kind of revolutionary for me. And so then I've played it every year since solo. Last year I had my bass player with me.
We did a duo and then this year we did the full band and it was like kind of a full circle moment. Kind of also felt like um like a jumping off point, you know what I mean? Like being able to do that with my band was like, "Okay, this is the new like direction. And this is the new thing, Porchfest moment for me to take my music even further and do even more with it. So, it was very awesome.
Yeah, it's my favorite day of the year cuz then you just hang out. I mean, all my friends and neighbors are there. Like if you gave me a dollar for every name I shouted out walk, I'd be freaking making bank after like we all have said that same thing like it's our the best weekend of the year or whatever and it's like people I don't think people know how serious we are. Serious. Yeah.
It's my favorite day. It made me like I don't know a weird sense of pride like in Noblesville like just how cool of an event that is. Yeah, totally. How unique Noblesville is and like I love that I had like we all live downtown like a bit of an emotional moment. It's like I'm playing, my friends and family are out there, there's like kids running around and then later on there's like I'm watching another band and there's kids running around and all my it's just like everybody here and the fact that people bring their children which I feel like increasingly a lot of people don't bring their kids or like they're not kid-friendly events.
the fact that everybody still brings them and they're running around. Like it's my daughter's favorite day of the year, too. And I just think that that is such a special thing to like have as a community to have not only all of us together, but all of our kids playing together and everybody kind of next generation doing that. Yeah. It's like, oh, you look at you're like, oh, this is what life should be.
I was like, yes, this is how it should be. Yes. Community should be. This is how Yeah. I love it.

And I have worked there 19 years. Wow. Yeah. I didn't know it's been here 19 years. Yeah.
It's been here 30 years. What? So yeah. No, it's not been here 30 years. Yeah, coffee shops haven't even existed that long.
No, they have. It opened in 1996. What? That's the original owner was really he I'm not kidding. He was like on the forefront of things and he was a big traveler.
He would go have coffee around the world and then he sold his like main business and the coffee shop was kind of his for fun thing and then it Yeah, it became like a thing. Wow. And yeah, we were lucky to kind of get in on the ground floor. Yeah, that's great. And now 30 years later and me almost 20 years later.
So I knew you as the the coffee shop person or Yeah, I knew you. Yeah, that's how people will call me uh coffee Kelly. Barista Kelly. They'll say, "Oh, no coffee." Like Yeah, that's kind of that's kind of my jam. Yeah.
Um Yeah. I typically I got a coffee this morning, but I would say 90% of the time I get a Kelly style chai, which is it's a chai made with hot coffee. That's the Kelly style chai after dark after dark. It's a chai made with vodka. Hold the chai.
Not 6:30 in the morning. Uh so chai made with uh hot coffee instead of water cuz we use a powder-based chai. So, hot coffee to melt the chai instead of water. Yeah. Just a little caffeine kick from it.
Little extra caffeine. Takes some of the sweetness edge off because I'm not like an overly sweet drinker. So, it kind of and then I don't have to pull a shot of espresso. I just pour the coffee. Well, let me ask you this.
Uh, from one barista to another, um, so I used to work for the corporate giant Starbucks. I know. Yeah. I mean, yes. Yeah.
Mhm. uh years ago. What's your least favorite drink to make? And why is it your version of a Frappuccino? I do.
I don't dislike those, but I do kind of dislike those. They're not hard. It's just annoying. It's like timeconuming. Yes.
And it breaks the flow, you know, because you're doing other things and all the drinks are roughly the same and then you get one of those and you're like, now I got to go over here. I got to do all this other stuff. Yeah. Yeah. It's a pain.
Yeah. But largely I don't have everything's kind of Yeah. the same, you know. Yeah. Yeah.
Now at Noble I forget. Do they do the grande small, medium, large? We do I will accept any nomenclature as long as I know what you mean. Technically we call them 12, 16, and 20 ounces. But if you say medium, I know what a medium is.
I'm not going to correct you. You know, I like that. Yeah. Yeah. The worst is when people come in and they say a regular.
And I'm like, what's a regular to you? Yeah. And they're like, just a normal. This happened to me with a woman. She said, just a normal.
And I was like, okay. So, I got out the medium. And she was like, that's too big. And I was like, so you want a small? Just say that.
I ordered an irregular. Yeah. So, and they gave me the right cup. Yes. Perfect.
Yeah. So it's regular irregular irregular and jumbo. What? Jumbo. Yeah.
Yeah. Okay. Um, check, check, check. I was going to say something else, too, but I don't remember what it was now. Oh well, it doesn't matter.
What's your favorite? I mean, do you Is it the Kelly Style Chai? Because that's your favorite. Favorite to make or favorite to drink? To drink.
Um, that varies honestly because I drink so much coffee. Like every day I drink black coffee. That's how I start my day. Yeah. So then anything after that is just kind of a bonus.
And it usually varies with what we have kind of going on. My like evergreen second favorite I guess is the cafe mel which is honey and cinnamon powder. Cafe meow. Mhm. Meow.
Like a cat. No, it's Mel. Mel. That's exactly how you should say it was. You look very proud of yourself after you said that.
Like kind of surprised. You confident. That's like my standard. It's not too sweet. It's, you know, good and kind of cozy.
But I don't know. We're working on a new a new pumpkin syrup. I was going to ask, how do you feel about it's come along? I usually don't like it, but I tried the new recipe that our manager, Victoria, is coming up with, and it's so freaking good. She's using real pumpkin puree.
Yes, she Yes, she's making everything real. She's got an emulsion in there. I don't know. She's doing a whole thing. And I tried a little one the other day and it was awesome.
So, stay tuned for that. So, what they what she's doing is she's cutting open a pumpkin right in front of you. The pulp, slopping it in the cup. Say, do you want it blended or not? Put some cayenne pepper in there for the spice.
Ah, yeah. It's a different take, but I think I think it could be delicious. I I liked where this is going. This is good. Anyways, that's why we're doing Hamco coffee shop Jams.

Okay, that sounds nice. A little in the back. Oh, that's nice. Oh, she comes in and kind of ruins it. The scars on his body, his missing half ear.
This is a song about Mick Foley and the Undertaker's infamous Hell in a Cell match uh in Pittsburgh where Mick Foley was thrown off the top of a steel cage and went through a table and then was thrown through the steel cage after he climbed back up on top after being thrown off. I was told that he had a tooth through his nostril. Yes. He got his teeth knocked out when he went through the cage and one went through his lip and into his nose. Poor mix through a lot.
Wow. Yeah, it's uh it's like an iconic moment in professional wrestling which I was a huge fan of for a very long time. Um but why in the world did you put this song on there? Well, because I automatically think of Kimmy Dawson when I think of coffee shop jams. Who doesn't?
Um, and I also feel like a component of coffee shop jams is maybe somebody discussing a subject matter that you don't want to hear about. That's coffee shop culture is just people talking about things that no one really wants to talk about or hear about. Maybe. Okay. Maybe I could see that.
And uh, followup question. Who is Kima Dawson? Kima Dawson is one half of the Moldy Peaches. Oh, the Moldy Peach. That's what it is.

But that's what I did. Yeah, I put some of that on there. I was like, but that's not going to be a fun top five if I just pick weirdo stuff, right? That nobody knows. No.
So, I went kind of indie. Um, I will follow you into the dark. Oh, yeah. That's Yeah, that's a good one. Yeah, I feel like that's kind of that's a Yeah, I don't want to hear it when I'm in a coffee shop, but I feel like it has a spot there.
I wouldn't hate it at a coffee shop. Why don't you want to hear it? I feel like it would be fitting. Why do you go to a coffee shop? Like you're doing work.

Okay. Unfortunately, this is the first song that came to my mind when you said coffee shop Jams. I don't necessarily like this song, but it set the tone for the rest of my list. Okay. And it's a song from like the early as called Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop by Landon Pig.
I remember Landon Pig. Yeah. And that song was like everywhere. I also worked at a salon at the time and we used to listen to the Sirius coffee house station and this song would play constantly. It played at the coffee shop all the time.
It just like that acoustic guitar, the soft vocals, the like that is the coffee shop vibe. Again, I don't have to reference coffee cuz this one does not. No, it does not have to reference coffee. That's like another way you could go with it. This one just happened to and that is maybe why it was the first thing that popped into my head.
Um I also watched the music video for it last night with my husband for the first time ever and it was weird. It was very early 2000s. Very, very weird, but an aesthetic to the early. Oh, yeah. Um, yeah.
But so that that was kind of my thought was uh not necessarily like obscure or personal, which I think Chris was going for more like personal subject matter. I was going for more of the actual like sound almost always acoustic guitar, soft voice, that kind of a Well, like you were saying, like kind of background stuff. Yeah. To where you could listen in and then get back out if you wanted. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Chris, what was your approach and what was your first pick? I was leaning towards poetic style music with limited instrumental backing, uh, like acoustic guitar and maybe some percussion thing that you've never seen before or heard of before.
Mhm. And then with the subject matter being either incredibly obscure and focused or very overly sharing was kind of my thoughtful like very thoughtful very very much. All right. What was your first pick then? Uh, I think the first thing I threw on there was the Kimmy Dawson sudden that we also that we discussed.
But, uh, after that I put on a song by Cheshki, uh, who's like a folk punk, uh, guy who did an acoustic album. And I I took a song called Longot off of his acoustic album. It's a Longot that's going to make the finals. What's this guy's name? Chesky.

Every every one of Chris's picks, how do you spell that? Uh, okay. Well, there's that. I kind of went I didn't think uh coffee shop specific. I just was like songs that you would listen to while drinking coffee was kind of where my head was, whether that was at home or at a coffee shop.
So, I'm just thinking like coffee, rainy day, um, hot cup of coffee, maybe you're reading a book and you're listening to some records or whatever. Okay. Um, so my first one was the best part of waking up in you got to pay for that now. No. Uh, I'm gonna go with Gosh, I put some put some good ones on here.
Um, in in honor of seeing them, I'm gonna go with I and Love and You by the AET brothers. Okay, that felt very Looking through the list last night, I was like, that's a coffee shop jam. Yeah, that is probably not obscure enough for your taste, Chris, but um I feel like the vibe fits from a vibe perspective. Yeah. Yeah.

Caffeine. Pay attention kids. Here's some science for you. Caffeine is water soluble, which means that it kind of attaches itself to a water molecule. And the more you roast a bean, that coffee or that water evaporates.
And so the darker the darker the roast, the less caffeine that's in there. How about that? The lighter the roast, the higher caffeine. True. How about that?
Interesting. But also, it's a shot, so you get it into your system faster. So that's probably the the gimmick there. Espresso is also not necessarily like a super dark roast. Sure.
It doesn't have to be. No. Yeah. Ours is not like the darkest coffee we have is not our espresso by far. Yeah.

There's another there's a podcast about it uh called Dolly Parton's America where they talk about how she is one of the most universally beloved celebrities where like you go to Dolly World and you will find people from every walk of life. It doesn't matter if you are like a country fan, if you're from where she's from, if you're you know whatever. Everybody just loved her and that is such a testament to the woman that she was and how authentically herself she was all the time. I've been like watching old interviews with her and stuff. The one on Johnny Carson where she does uh she does a song about being on Johnny Carson like and he's just like enamored with it and she hits that uh D chord with her acrylic nails.
You're like that shouldn't be possible. I can't do that. That's really good. And uh I saw too where this season the uh University of Tennessee is wearing like a Dolly symbol on their helmets or whatever. Like that's crazy.
Like yeah, it's just cool. She was one of like the first um cool like famous artists that we got to make a guitar strap for. Oh, really? So we have she after we made it, this is decades ago. Um, but she sent in like an eight by10 glossy uh and signed it.

Well, I'm playing a little thing you might have heard of called Trade Up Fest. Trade Up Fest. September 19th. September 19th, I'll be there with my full band doing my original music. And you go on at 2:30 if I'm right.

I approached you about playing it very early on and I understood it as you saying you were going to go talk to your band and then let me know I you meant yeah we're going to do it. Yeah. I was like well as long as it's before like a certain hour cuz some of the other guys have stuff to go to. And you said yeah I I don't have a schedule that's not going to be a problem. And I was like okay cool.
And I thought that was like settled and then you texted me like weeks later. Hey, are you going to do this? And I was like, yeah. I thought I was like, oh crap. Okay.
So, um actually I have a lot of gigs before that to be fair. But yes, um my calendar I just posted my calendar. You can go. My September is just like crazy packed. Yeah, that weekend's actually packed.
You got something on the I'm doing SIDS on the 17th. I'm doing Trade Up Fest. I'm doing uh private events. Couple private events. It's like just a weird crazy month.
But um that's the only I think Trade Upfest is the only like all original festival uh that we're doing this month. Perfect. Love it. Uh Tyler, what do you got coming up? Anything?

Start rehearsing. Little collaboration. A collab. And we also released uh Rusty Redbucker's new album last Friday. Nice.
10,000 hours. Front Porch Records is bus is killing it. Mhm. Uh recently released um Ghost on Maple, too. Yeah.
Which is going very well. Two weeks. We've got their release party coming up September 26th at Prime Evil. Hey, nice. Okay.
