show today I am joined by Dan kid or better known to the masses as heavy bourbon Dan is Indianapolis in the broader nation's bourbon King and since starting to create content he has acquired over 70,000 followers across Tik Tok and Instagram today we're going to be diving into a few of of his favorite Indiana whiskies and sharing the top 10 places to enjoy a nice whiskey in Central Indiana Dan welcome to get in thank you thank you excited to be here uh he's excited to be back here so we're going to preface everyone that we did have to like wait a couple months and do a take two So today we're going to we're going to sample five different distilleries uh the first time that we that we recorded this we tried three whiskies from five to we too much and by the end of it we had gone on it was a full Joe Rogan episode 3 hours and it was just it was wild uh so we're going to save that one maybe we'll release that like the 10 year anniversary but today we're going to sample One One Whiskey One Bourbon from oh one two three four five six we're going to try out six different distilleries we're going small pores and we're going to just take you on a little taste test of uh some of the finer Spirits here in Indiana we've got ourselves a little hard truth from Nashville Indiana nice little cork pop there oh that's a good that's a good pop right there all right and so this is their sweet Mash bourbon right I believe yeah oh yeah little sweet Mash bourbon so I I since the last time we talked I had uh Brian Smith the uh Master distiller I had him on the podcast and he gave me the whole Insight of all sweet Mash sour mash like what they're doing down there is incredible and they're just going to bring more to Market oh it's insane they've got so many different finishes and different like flavor profiles it's wild like if if if you enjoy Whiskey and You can't find something there that you like then I suggest you try harder yeah and so I I will say it's down in Nashville it's an awesome Distillery I think they have 325 acres and they've only developed like 25 of it it's crazy beautiful yeah super cool place uh cheers brother cheers so do you remember what I told you last time about the how to so first we first we first you you you open your mouth you kind of breathe in kind of breathe in through your nose you're going to be able to get some of that some of those flavors on your tongue yep so you kind of do that now you're first sip is going to be just a little baby sip to kind of prepare your pette and this is teaching everyone how how you're supposed to sip whiskey yes yes so you start open open mouth breath open mouth breath you can kind of taste a little bit of it now we go in for a small little sip kind of roll that around your mouth um so what that does kind of climatized your mouth to the alcohol that it's getting ready to take so for the for the pain and suffering we're about to put it so that one might be a little bit harsh and then we go in for our next one we can to breathe in again just like that we're back on the wagon mhm now the next one I like to kind of roll it around introduce it to kind of the back the sides the corners of my mouth get that on there and then then we go in for the for the big boy the kill so well we don't have this is what got us in trouble last time was all the kill this this is a little guy this this is a little guy little guy we're uh we're not we're light bourbon today you don't you don't have to kill it today but uh and kind of let that sit and then that's where you develop all those different flavors and so what what notes are you getting there this is their sweet Mash bourbon I mean the name says it I'm not sure if that's what they meant but um I mean it's definitely a sweeter bourbon um I do get a lot of corn um not sure if that's a high Rye or not but I get a little bit of U kind of baking spice on the back you've got your classic caramels and or caramel I need to get my whiskey my bourbon flavor wheel up yeah so that's that's the fun thing um I try and suggest everyone do is you know if you're if you're looking to to throw out notes that's not my big my big Forte but um a lot of people say you know what do you get so there's no wrong answer it's whatever you're going to pull off I'm getting more yeah I'm getting maybe that like if I'm looking at the bourbon flavor wheel maybe it's between sweet and spice like they have like baked mhm like kind of finishes with those baking SP aric clove yeah herbal tea yeah well then okay so obviously yeah yeah flavor profile which is really interesting to me that you got you you've collected so many followers and created so much content but you're not a flavor guy so what really got you popping when it came to Bourbon I mean it's for me it was the it was the all out just chugging the aggressive drinking the the having fun yeah take us to the take us to the beginning when did you start putting out content uh so I started May of 2020 kind of the the co thing so um was not laid off work but I was forced to stop work and that's kind of when I started making more and more bourbon content so I think we're a couple weeks into Co a couple weeks without working and I'm kaying smoking a cigar I'm out of my Lake and like man it' be a funny be a funny post if I were to you know do a little bottle chug so I'm like oh it's it's 2:00 and and I have no idea what day it is so we're just going to do a little bottle pull and smoke a cigar so I posted that and where did you post it at uh mostly uh Facebook some of those local Facebook groups there's like a Northside bourbon group and there's tons tons of these groups and then you know that got a really good reaction so some of the guys were like oh my God that's hilarious used to do that every day so the next day I was like hey guys it's 2:00 I found out it's Thursday cuz you know I had no idea what day it was so we're going to do another bottle pull and that just LED on to chugging chugging chugging every day and then uh kind of big red got a hold of it and they said hey we want to do a bottle with your face on it you know kind of using your likeness we'll do a Dan kids 2:00 chugs and so that really kind of catapulted me and it gave me um some fam familiarity with you know kind of the whole bourbon community and then that just kind of launched my I don't know if bourbon career launch it launched my drink career just drinking career he was like yeah I was just a recreational Drinker before and now I'm a professional professional yeah I mean I love that and if anyone that's seen this stuff it's all like lighthearted fun very light-hearted very fun now I mean I I do I do host you know pretty serious tastings and we can get into some really high-end whiskey and I can really enjoy it but I enjoy I mean I obviously enjoy really really high-end whiskey but I like doing just tastings where I'm taking new people through you know giving them a little bit of an education so I do have that educational background so I'm a certified uh bourbon steart so I've got the Certification did you have that before you were a content creator or you after I actually I just did this more more for fun um just to kind of make my tastings a little bit more educational just give me a little bit more of a background yeah on that so well I love that and let's get into so let's get into what it takes to be a bourbon Stewart but but first let's try some first all right we've got some uh Moon drops uh Distillery this is from Fortville Indiana um so the cool thing about some of these bottles is we're going to be doing some giveaways if you like both our Pages yeah if if you follow if you that's that was very Boomer is if you like if you like both of our Pages if you follow both of us if you follow both of us you follow Moon drops um and then tag some friends yeah um we'll choose winners uh so we're going to be doing that for three different distilleries so there it is we're giving away a bottle of moon drops follow heavy bourbon Nate bangle follow Moon drops and uh tag some friends you see me a little guy there y perfect there we go woo so this is a seven-year so right off the bat on this one you tell you tell me you tell me okay so first things first first things first is a an open mouth breath oh I have like chocolate and caramel there last time I didn't know anything last time I literally could not by the end of it it was just like that's booze this let me bring my flavor wheel up you see how you're learning yeah it's funny how you learn um uh maybe sweet malt like through the grain profile sweet malt or yeah I could go also get baked chocolate so I get I get a lot of sweet like a like a burnt brown sugar almost like a multi brown sugar yeah well you know what they say everybody's uh everybody's pallets just a little bit yeah I mean it's and it's it's what's it's what it reminds you of it's what you and moon drops I think is actually I think they got a big thing with Lucas Oil yeah moops Distillery Landing um that's pretty sick so next time oh Lord if you're watching Colts you probably need a few of these let's be honest if you're watching we're watching AR back there slinging it cheers gentlemen sir cheers ladies oo yeah oh that came at the end now I wouldn't recommend drinking all these this fast but we're professionals yeah your second time through and again look look how much you've learned look how much you're develop your pal develop exactly I agree like the only way the only way to learn is to just experiment with it well so take us through then all right so so you went through the process of becoming a whiskey Steward yeah so that's like a Somali air for whiskey yeah okay so what did that process look like so it's this one was pretty simple um I mean we did like a very extensive weekend course and uh I mean I've been studying I've been studying for years and years studying many days and many nights um kind of learning about it so his true passion his calling some might say this this one um if if anybody's interested it's it's a it's more of an education for you you know how much of that you retain is is is kind of up to you but you get a big history and the you know all the history of all the whiskies and it gets it can get really boring and really nerdy um and just you know with definitions and what's the difference between you know Canadian whiskey and you know American bourb what is the difference between Canadian whiskey and American bourbon oh man where's my where's my cheat sheet so um bourbon has to be um at least 51% corn aged and a new CH Oak Barrel um and it can come from anywhere that's a big misconception that has to come from Kentucky yeah that's like the ultimate marketing Ploy that's the ultimate markting the ultimate marketing Ploy is that that bourbon has to come from Kentucky now there's straight bourbon Kentucky which that's so to be considered straight bourbon Kentucky wait straight bourbon Kentucky or straight Kentucky straight Kentucky bourbon it's already hitting me so be uh straight Kentucky bourbon and that's that's a label that they'll put that on there but that that's the only one that can come has to come from Kentucky but everything else and it's like some of those like L those brands that you know that are like you know Kentucky based brands are actually from lawence yeah yeah yeah they and we're going to get into what's going on out in Lawrenceburg contract distilling yeah the the racket that's being that's been run for years I don't know if it's a racket necessarily but it's just like Lawrenceburg creates a ton and ton and ton of whiskey and bourbon ton of whiskey yeah okay so what's the difference between whiskey and bourbon again so whiskey is the big broad category it would be like a rectangle and then a square is bourbon so think about a pyramid oh well you know how it's like every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle's a square every bourbon's a whiskey but not every Whiskey's a bourbon exactly so so we've got whiskey within whiskey is bourbon we've got Scotch we've got Ry we've got Canadian whiskey and then we've got you know I think some other random things so each of them have the specification so like again within bourbon it's got to be at least so what are we are these all Bourbons today no I see Ry whiskey there yes we've got a rye whiskey and I think straight bourbon here bourbon yeah I think most of them are Bourbons so and that means 51% corn at least 51% corn at yeah so that's what goes into the M there's only four ingredients right you can use I mean so a lot of them I mean they'll use R they'll use malt they use you know Ry malt corn like cere cereal cereal grains basically oh so it's not a specific number of grains yeah whiskey is made from a combination of grains usually one or more of the following four okay so maybe there's some more you can go but the the four core ones are corn Rye barley wheat mhm corn Rye barley wheat wow okay so I mean this this one for Moon drops was good I liked it yeah and again it's it's with each different whiskey you know depending on the climate depending on where it's where it's made you're you're going to get different different flavors and it's going to pull off different things have you been out to their to cery in I haven't and I really want to go um there's a really cool Cigar Bar close to there called the final third and they've got it's amazing guys out there they've got a cool podcast that I've been on a few times but he just a really nice cigar bar and the guys are really cool they're really knowledgeable and so they um I mean they they carry a lot of this stuff they've got a lot of really highend stuff too so shout out to those final third guys too so I would love to go um I've been offered an opportunity to go out there I just I don't have the time to I need to I need to find the time there it is priorities you're the bourbon guy you got to find time find time for bourbon yeah no need to work I just go drink all the time yeah right exactly quick pause in the action are you trying to find a gift for the person who has everything try a AAA membership now AAA isn't just roadside assistance there are even more benefits off the road like discounts on Indie com to become a member if you haven't already go back and check out my episode with Matt Goins we had an awesome conversation about all the benefits of AAA offers for you uh check them out at tria. com and use code nate4 all right we want to get into the next one let's get into the next one all right so we've got some habber Dasher I'm hoping I'm saying that right I think you are so this is a single barrel from Franklin yeah down south cuz they they're also like a nice cool bar and they do a couple other Spirits that's what I've heard yeah I've heard they're really good with their Cocktails so um yeah let's get into it oh that's a good pop yeah that was a real good pop so I believe I was reading up on the sheet this one's a little bit younger um so we'll see how yeah just a little guy little sample um but yeah so a little bit younger what do we got what does the sheet say so locally Source corn Rye molted barley um so this is a cast strength what does that mean when they put the when they put the the whiskey in um they age it and usually a lot of the water evaporates and so when it evaporates um the proof of the whiskey goes up yep so some people what they'll do to get more um volume out of their whiskey is they'll proof it down so they'll proof it down to I think most of these I I tend to prefer more cast strength whiskey so this is a 50% so they've proofed this down to 50% whereas this this is a um a 54.
1% okay and that's what it comes out as so they don't they don't put any water in that so this one's aged 14 months which is it's a pretty young one uh where was this this is a Franklin Indiana is it uh well I always like to look right is it is it Lawrenceburg distilled or is this I think this is their own yeah so what I tried to do is get a lot of uh Indiana Indiana Indiana distillers and then okay we're going to sample this and then we'll get into what I'm talking about and anyone that doesn't know about this whole thing going on down in Lawrenceburg so right off the bat it's very corn forward is what I'm that's what I'm getting and and you kind of taste that from the or knows that from just kind of how young it is but you know I I do respect a lot of these distilleries too cuz um starting off is hard um you know because you're putting out your own you're putting out your own distillate yeah I mean you go buy all the ingredients and stuff in you say 14 months like you just got to sit on it for 14 months how you make any money so yeah I mean so what people do if you want if you want to get into that now so um what a lot of people do is they'll get into they'll contract a still so MGP and Lawrenceburg Indiana they've got thousands and thousands and thousands of barrels and so they'll sell those barrels to companies like these and then they can kind of put those out as their own into their own brand and they can you know they can blend them or they can sit on them for longer or do what they want and they kind of get the flavor profile that they want and they can put those out and make a little bit of income as they're waiting for their own distillate to age yeah and so you're basically just like a glorified marketing company at that point yeah while you're waiting for you know if few if you uh Barrel your own MH how do you know so much about this process um cuz so I've got my own bottles that done my chugs bottles like I was talking about um so we went through so the first one was a three-year and we did eight barrels about 1,600 bottles um that we produced what was so this was different than the 2:00 chug no this was the two o' chug this was so you got to go through and pick what you wanted yeah so we did eight different single barrels um so we kind of had again 1,600 bottles all different flavor profiles uh yeah for eight so eight different flavor profiles and then uh for the second one we did the chugs 2.
0 so we did just a straight Single Barrel so it was about a 5year uh Single Barrel so a little bit older um and we kept that about cast strength so we got about 220 bottles out of those yeah so anyway we basically have you have you know x amount of barrels to choose from I think I had about 10 to choose from and then I picked my favorite out of that and then for the third one we did two separate single barrels and then for we did a fourth uh Edition as well and we did two single barrels as well and who's like who was like buying this up and where was it available at it was through big red but it was also through Cardinal Spirits um so they were so I think I think it was Cardinal spirits that bought it from MGP so they had bought a bunch of them and kind of sat back on them I think that's the way that that worked um and then through big red it's it's a whole it's a whole chain of distribution and your your bottles were just available and all Big Reds yep all Big Reds they were available man how quick did the first one sell out so the first one took a little while cuz we did we did a big uh we did kind of a big press release so I had people from all over like Kentucky and uh some guy from Arizona came out and so it was a pretty big it was mostly local though cuz that's where I was getting a lot of my traction um but my second third that was, 1600 bottles or what what you yeah 1600 that's a lot to sell through yeah it was a lot to sell through um but it was a cool you know I had my face on it so obviously it was really cool yeah exactly um yeah it was the it was the second and third and fourth one that um those really kind of took off um it was because I was bigger in the bourbon community so I had people I mean I was they they were making their way to Germany and California and Australia so I mean those bottles got way out there cuz there's people that are seeing the content they're like oh man everyone's chugging this bottle I've got to I've got to have one of these bottles to chug so that's so cool yeah I mean and and what did you think that you would get there like I mean millions of people have seen you drinking bourbon oh yeah and it all started on a kayak yeah out in the middle of the lake like that's crazy and it's just yeah it's turned into just a lot of a lot a lot of fun so yeah I mean cheers to that yeah cheers to that quick pause in the action to tell you about my friends from hard truth this is my favorite bourbon in the state of Indiana I was down at The Distillery in Nashville it is a place you have to check out this holiday season if you're looking for a getaway go down there get a spot at the cabin hang out at the restaurant the distiller go on all the tours it is an amazing time as you're thinking about holiday gifting go pick up a bottle of hard Truth at the nearest liquor store and and give that to the special someone in your life it is a gift that you definitely won't forget there's plenty of recipes and fun stuff that you can make with a bourbon as well I love what they have they have some amazing collabs with people like melon Camp whiskey Co hard truth has been an amazing partner of mine they were at the world mix Championship they were the bourbon of choice there their Journey over the past few years has been incredible to watch I'm a huge fan of hard truth and they've been a great supporter to us make sure you go check out hard truth now let's get back into it what's been the biggest lesson that you've learned throughout this journey of uh becoming a bourbon Creator don't judge a bourbon by its cover okay what do you mean by that uh I mean there's so there's a lot of super hyped up bottles I mean I've spent way more money than I care some papy vanwinkle some papy vanwinkle you get these bottles with so much height behind them and you know like what do a bottle of papy vanwinkle cost I mean if you're looking at like the 15 year probably 15,600 on the secondary so you know you're so say say you're you're buying one of those for a gift or for somebody else or for a special occasion you know you open it and you've got all this you know oh my this got to be amazing it's got to be amazing and you get it and you're like I mean it's good you know part of you inside's going to be like okay I spent this much money on it so it has to be good and so you're going to Hype it up yourself and you're you're going to make it good but you know after a while you know you've tasted so many Bourbons you go back you've tasted so much whiskey you go back and you're like okay was that really was that really worth it so one of the fun things that I like to do is we'll get some high-end whiskey and we'll get some everyday run-ofthe-mill stuff and we'll put it all in and we'll blind it or I'll have buddies that'll give me you know three or four samples and be like all right I'm not going to tell you what they are you tell me if you like them and it's like okay this was good that one was really good or that one wasn't that good and you're like okay well the the first one was that really high-end bottle that you spent x amount of dollars on you know and you didn't really like it so yeah do you think you could pick out the flavor profile based like blindfolded there's a few that I can um I wish I was that talented I've got buddies that they can definitely they can this is a Four Roses obsf I mean they can name the recipes and the different batches and it's absolutely wild I can do it to a certain extent I could probably maybe narrow it down to a Distillery um and that's that's a fun game I like to play like me and my girlfriend will go into a bar and you know she'll go to the bathroom or something I'll get two bourbons and I'll be like all right what are these and she'll you know she'll smell through them and try and tell me and then you know she'll do the same for me so man and have you found like a sweet spot where it's like ah you know this price point or this thing is I yeah you know and it's and it's different with you know because everyone's got everyone's got a different price point everyone's got a different budget so anywhere from I'd say4 to $75 for me like you're getting something good in there for yeah and I and I can find I know that I can find something good you know it's always fun to you know get your Wang swinging big and keeping it going you yeah right you go buy something like C you go buy something crazy for like your anniversary or something big you know special birthday big special but like you're every day like what do you like what are you paying for bottle like on an average week so my everyday um man so that's the thing is it's i' I'm so inundated with all these cuz I have all these companies sending me all these bottles so I'm like man oh yeah it must be nice have to try this I have to try this I have to try this so has anyone ever sent you something that you're just like that's not for me I've had a lot of it and I've had I've had a lot of it now hey I give this out to my buddies it's yeah I mean it happens a lot um I mean I I popped open a couple today that I was like all right this is this is very fine it's very okay you know and then now I have whiskey Cokes for another month I I do you know but I've got I've I've got a massive collection at home so well and uh okay so talk to me there's one huge Creator actually it's go we'll go into the next we get into this next part about bourbon creators so this is a four-finger Distillery this is a barrel prooof Ry um the owner let me try this at The Distillery the reason it's called four fingers uh Distillery is because he lost his pinky while they were I think if I remember the story correctly um build either saw something for The Distillery so like making the still or something right doing something um I forget the story cuz I'd had a few pores at that point yeah yeah but I mean it's it's definitely like a there we go yeah so this is a barrel prooof Ry I believe um oh I do get a little I get some fruit floral maybe H so again we've got a it's not this uh not this particular bottle cuz I believe this is a single barrel but we've got another um four fingers Distillery bottle to give away so again follow myself follow night follow four fingers y we're giving away a bottle of Four Fingers make sure you follow us tag your friends yeah follow them and uh and yeah we'll uh we'll make it I mean we're going to give away what three different bottles I think right yeah yeah I think we've got three different bottles so we got a moon drops bottle a four finger bottle and a surprise for you who wait till the end and I do have a I have a secret surprise that I'm excited to uh to sample for you so I brought one he brought he's the bourbon kind of sewer what I do want to talk about though is a bourbon Creator is it Fred minck Fred minck yeah yeah this guy is like the guy in the guy yeah he was like the first one to kind of really get into it's like you talk about uh if anyone doesn't know Fred he is the guy in Bourbon like he makes YouTube videos reviewing stuff people will send him [ __ ] and like but he's straight up he's like I will not uh he doesn't like you can't buy him yeah like you can't like I was talking to Brian he actually tried to network like no it's like he gives you an honest review and he gives his fans an honest review The Bourbon Community loves him and his videos are not like insanely produced or anything like he just a guy in front of a camera drinking bourbon yeah and he's but he's he's got such a knowledge and he's been doing it for so long and so you have a you have a respect for him just because he's been doing it for so long and he was kind of the first one to really get into it like that and he's I mean I think he's the one behind Bourbon and Beyond it's this massive music music and Bourbon Festival I don't know that it's amazing it's like a it's a three-day music event have you been uh no so uh this last year was the first year that wasn't the same time as uh bourbon Fest so normally it's at the same time bourbon Fest bourbon Fest is another three-day beautiful Festival um in Bardstown Kentucky oh yeah it's all the local Kentucky distilleries it's all the local artists um and all the I mean people come from all over I meann it's like right near Louisville right it's about 45 minutes away from yeah okay so is this Bown Road Road isn't there this whole thing there's a Bown Road in Louisville in Louisville that's like the most bars on one road or something like that yeah could be yeah okay so yeah Fred is a guy behind the bourbon and Beyond bbon and yeah bbon Bourbon and Beyond so massive Music Festival so I mean I've got a ton of friends that go that aren't even bourbon fans but it's just in Kentucky just cuz the music's so great and so I had a client that went um I think he said he had they had seven stages I think is what they said they had so just it's just a massive Festival um rocking out and they've got a lot of really good bourb in there and so it's a lot of fun heck yeah I love that is there anything like that in Indiana I think they were trying to put together a few I think uh like a whiskey Riot I think was trying to come and and put together whiskey Riot yeah they were trying to put together something and I don't think they got enough people signed up for it um but we try and do I was a part of uh we had a whiskey thing at the um historic societies last year um they just had a bunch of you know local vendors and other state vendors come and you could sample and it was a lot of fun I brought aor sport of whiskey oh heck yeah well who are the like big players in Indiana whiskey I know that hard truth is is mass and only going to continue to grow but who are the other ones heart truth is big I mean these guys that we have right here um I mean you can't go without mentioning westfork I mean West Fork's I think they've they just announced they're expanding into Fountain Square um oh wow they closed down one they closed down the one on Bell Fontaine the one right downtown but I think they're opening up a new one um in Fountain Square and then they've got the one up in Westfield next to Grand Park so that one's just massively huge it's like a whole you can have a wedding there yeah yeah it's a it's a big event center that's really cool the food there is really good too yeah and I'm thinking through like outside of like Central Indiana like I feel like hard truth is just like I think hard truth has the biggest me personally they've got the biggest foothold that's probably one of my I mean it's like all the stuff they have in their Rick house like rack house they just everything and Brian's so knowledgeable and he's been crushing it for years and then I mean just the the campus itself I mean with the the T the ATV tours that you're doing and then they've got the live music and then they've got the restaurants there I mean they've dumped a lot of money into it a lot I always love dude seeing the like the like upand cominging ones you know like I mean Franklin like a habd daser and you have four finger we're going to get into one e day which this is a new spot just off Mass app right yeah yeah yeah it's at the end of massav Circle City industrial complex Circle City industrial complex yeah so they've got like a really cool it's like a little cocktail bar there's like a cool little outdoor area you can uh you can get your cluster truck food delivered right into there that's pretty cool well if you know anything you know that Dan and I both love cluster truck they are awesome Partners to us oh yeah you'll notice that Dan just takes a little bit larger of a pore than I do which is totally fair So speaking of eth day yeah this is a 70% corn so it's a high corn 25 % Ry and 5% malt oh so and I think we we pounded our way through about a half that botle last time so we're not going we're not going to do as much I don't know how we did that I don't know how we I don't know how we I do yeah we did hit a workout the next morning which is even crazier very aggressively yeah it was a wild 24 hours there to the point we I walked home from the office so that just tells you anything we've got another Eighth Day so follow 8th day follow myself eight we're be giving away a bottle yeah I love that that'll be fun um cheers brother cheers all right so high corn on the flavor profile yeah it's interesting coming right off that rye too because you have some of those High Rye spices so that's going to kind of change what you smell what you taste I still love looking over your face sometimes cuz you're like I'm not sure I don't know I'm just it's kind of gotten into that I just smell bourbon um okay what's the what's the most expensive bottle that you've ever tried about $155,000 holy what was it so um it was a tornado Survivor eh Taylor tornado Survivor so that it a Buffalo Trace um so they had a tornado that had ripped through um The Distillery and ripped part of the roof off so it's a really it's a cool story it's a you know it's all marketing so it ripped some of the roof off so some of the barrels were exposed to the elements so instead of you know being covered they were getting the rain and the snow and all that other stuff and so instead of you know saying these bottles of ruined they took them and they they you know bottled them and then they put it as a tornado it's like a warehouse SE tornado Survivor so and then they ended up making more money yeah so that was one of their um that was one of their special that wasn't that long ago was it specialy bottles that was probably 11 or 12 years ago okay so H maybe maybe a little bit longer but yeah okay and then so what was the age on that you know I'm not sure if I had to guess I'd say eight or nine years is that funny though it's like not like a 20 year or whatever because it's like it's just the story behind it part of what makes it more expensive is one it was a limited release so they didn't release that many bottles and then back then when they were releasing these like bourbon wasn't a big deal and so you could find it on the shelf for you know $70 just like you know way back when I was in college you could find papy vanwinkle on the shelf for all all the time they just couldn't sell wait when did you get into bourbon uh in High I mean in uh when I was 21 yes yes the day he turned 21 the dad turned 21 that's a weird thing for a young a young in to get into bourbon like w I was I was doing you know I was doing shots in College of like you know cheap Evan Williams you know shots of bourbon and chasing it with you know Dr Pepper or something like that just you know kind of wincing it down um so what really got me into bourbon was the find Folks at sto Steakhouse who were going to be uh drinking some of their stuff next um oh how so I was I was a valet driver there and um they were going on one of their first uh Woodford Reserve Barrel picks and so they asked me to drive along um so I was like yeah that sounds like a fun time so you know I drive everybody down there and we have a Chris Morris the master distiller um you know we have a nice breakfast with him and we're walking through the Rick houses this is way back before they got so commercialized so we're walking through and we choose these eight different barrels and we're blending A and B A and C A and D and you know all the other ones and so he's sitting there we're sitting there with the master distiller and you know he's nosing them and he's giving us his tasting notes and kind of explaining the process and so we're blending and I wasn't really drinking at this time cuz I was still driving driving but I think they had a tie and there was a tiebreaker so like hey Dan you should you know you should be the tiebreaker and I was like oh okay so I get in there and you know I have a couple drinks and so we picked I think actually we end up there was two barrels two barrel Blends that we really liked um and so that kind of gave me my first like education and actually speaking of papy vanwinkle we went out to 21c afterwards and they bought us all flights of you know papy vanwinkle and I how are you kind of like we did last time I was you know just shooting them back like hey this is fun you know I can shoot these and then and then who had to dve D home and then well that we stayed the night oh that's nice we had to wake up the next morning and then I had to drive home but um yeah so that kind of gave me my crash course crash crash course education in Bourbon um and then you came back and you're just like yeah I love this and then from there yeah I mean because you know because you're learning about the history you're learning about everything that goes into it and again you know from a master to Stiller so and I'd never had that you know I'd always just done shots and whatever so it was you know he kind of taught us how to how to taste it how to drink it how to nose it so then from then you know at that point Woodford you know $ 30 $40 bottle was like my highend I was like oh my God Woodford I got to get that that's the best that's the best that's the best and then Woodford is a good bottle Woodford is fantastic I love you give me a good cigar good Woodford good Woodford double oaked nice dessert bourbon um I mean I'll I'll still do if you know a lot of bars you know that's kind of a staple they have that that's the most most typical bars and so if that's you know what they have then that's that's probably what I'm choosing but then then you get oh I got to try this I got to try this and then it just keeps going up and up and up and up and then there's basically no ceiling on you know how much you can spend or how much time you can spend and everything else what uh what would you say Okay obviously we love all the local Bourbons but and obviously we want you to support our local local bourbon but if you were just like getting into Bourbon and you're like ah I want something that's like semi- nice but like I don't want to break the bank what are you drinking so what iend I always recommend so there's a few things that I look at I look at um you know Price It's So price point then I look at availability cuz I can give you you know I've got there's a lot of great Bourbons but you just can't find them and you can't find them at that price and so you're going to have to pay secondary pricing so I always say there's a Four Roses small batch select so you can find you can should be able to go into any liquor store um there's a four rows of small batch and then there's a four rows of small batch select and it's about $60 but it's just a very well-rounded I'm not sure what the proof on it is it's either 90 or 100 or something like that but it's just a very well-rounded bourbon it's $60 um it's something you should be able to find everywhere else or everywhere and then there's also um there's a bullet 10 here which I think is absolutely fantastic and again that's that same price point about $60 so nice when it comes to local bourbon if you had to say what your your go-to favorite local bourbon is a go-to favorite local bourbon man all these are great I was in a hard truth they sent me about three or four different bottles um a couple weeks ago and I really dove into them and and they've got a sweet Mash Rye that is just absolutely fantastic I mean the sweet Mash bourbon's good but the sweet Mash Rye and then there's a John melon Camp expression too which I had their one of their melon Camp so wild it's it's just got so it's so rich like a marshmallowy like just sugar like a burnt sugar just like a wonderful wonderful finish and it's so good and it's it's it's so odd to drink something like you know that's that high proof and it just finishes with that real sweet but not over not overly sweet but just real sweet finish I mean no bourbon is I think is overly sweet yeah well I've I've had a few really yeah I get it's I don't know it's funny cuz I get I get kind of pretentious like that I mean when you again when you drink a lot there's some that you can I've had that I've had some that are a lot of okay so I had the Old Forest I don't want to [ __ ] on any Bourbons but I had the old Forester birthday bourbon yeah yesterday or yesterday or the day before and it's it's I mean it's good but it's just for me it's too sweet it's like a medicinal sweetness so and again that's that's one of those you know I think it's hey we we're not we're not making fun of them we're just giving again this is this is my palette but it's uh for me it's a little bit too sweet so yeah just like Frank right you just s or Fred just like Fred you just set him straight it's good and I and I've got tons of friends that they've agree with me on some stuff and some people like that and some people don't that's that's the cool thing about bourbon you can love one I can hate one and you know we move on to the next one and we enjoy it which that's how that's how life should be yeah exactly right what's don't I think someone says don't yuck my yum yeah don't yuck my exactly if you if you like it then you like it exactly and some people just like you see Bourbon and you're like yeah run the other way I've got a buddy that's into all these weird like Saturn flavors and like there's uh there's this bloody butcher corn that they're growing in Kentucky and it's got this like weird Funk to it and for me it's it's it's like it's funky and it's like I don't know what I'm drinking it's it's like it's just it's a weird mouth feel and everything and my buddy loves it he's like oh that stuff's so good it's a weird Funk that I I can't get into but he's like oh that's that stuff's awesome interest I mean that's just how it go sometimes yeah um and as we round out this uh our collection of tastings we're going to I mean this one's interesting I've never seen this bottle before so what do we got what do we got rolling here so we've got the rare Saint um this is by sto Spirits so this is the bourbon um is this available in stores this is available in stores um I think they've done an official actual release you know I'm I'm excited about this this is fun um how old is this like this has to be fairly new I think yeah this is fairly new so this is I believe their contract distilling from this so this is 100 proof I don't think it has an age statement no no it's Age 5 years okay so it's a 5year bourbon um so I think this is a very good bourbon I don't want to sell this short but I got really excited cuz I went to Harry and Iz the other day and they have a single barrel they've got a seven-year Single Barrel that they put out and I think it's only at her and Izzy and it's absolutely fantastic and I I mean so I tried it and I was like I was blown away I think it's a seven-year um oh that's a good pop that was a really good pop but um rare Saints doing a lot of really really nice stuff um well yeah they they just released vodka too yeah they have a few different Spirits uh which is super cool I uh I just went down and competed against them in shrimp cocktail making contest yeah so it was me versus one of their chefs I was like cutting up the horseradish and then grinding it and like we made it and I ended up winning the competition oh yeah it was crazy we had their general manager like taste test blind tendia it was pretty sick nice all right so we got rare Saint here rare scent yeah and again if you guys are in the market um you guys want to try a really really nice one go to her izzi's um it's it's they've got it um behind the bar it's got a red label I'm not sure there's a special name that they've got for it but just ask for the red labeled Single Barrel R rare Saint it's fantastic I think it's a it's a weater I think so it's mostly wheat oh um so I I loved it though but cheers cheers and they've got a they've got a lot of really cool stuff coming too I know that they've acquired a bunch of nice bottles and they've got some older older barrels I should say um so I think they're going to be putting some really cool stuff I love that coming in the future so that's what I mean these are all great great table I mean I'm going to be honest my Pal's not robust enough to be like oh yes this is all but it's it's good stuff and it for me as a novice in the bourbon like it's not that different from I mean it doesn't taste any different from the what you get in Kentucky yeah it's very similar yeah I mean we we have such a similar climate than as they do as well so yeah and what they do say right is like the reason what they believe makes the Kentucky bourbon so good right as it comes off that Indiana Limestone really has that that fresh water taste or whatever down there huge thank you to our friends at Greeks Pizzeria since 1968 Greeks have been serving up Delicious Pies all over Indiana from Fort Wayne to Crawfordsville down to Bloomington and everywhere in between Greeks Pizzeria is all over the state you need to go check out the video I posted of Mike Cole now Mike owns the Greeks in zionville he ran the mill race marathon in Columbus and broke the World Record for fastest marathon while holding a pizza it was a spectacle it was super awesome the man crushed it he ran a 3-hour and 15minute Marathon while holding a pizza that's faster than I run my normal Marathon it was an insane feat to witness give yourself a break for making dinner tonight pull out your phone go to Greeks pizzeria.
com and find the store nearest you order a large pepperoni you're going to be a hero for your significant other your kids whoever they are they're going to love you there's a reason they've been in business for 55 years they know what they're doing when it comes to Pizza go check out Greek's pizzeria. com this is fun those were all great things I want to save my sample till the end okay uh but we do want to get into the top 10 places around the around Central Indiana to get a bourbon yeah and you know cuz you you go all around and you drink bourbon places and I mean I won't say I know a ton but I know a few I have a few hidden gems in there so we're going to put them in no particular order yeah so in no particular order uh we're just going to like you talk about a few uh I mean the easiest one for me is down on massav and it's the exchange yeah right there I got the corner right above right by basbo right there that's a solid little spot I love the exchange man they've got um they usually get a lot of allocated bottles in there which is really nice what what do you mean by allocated bottles alloc so it's it's going to be rare it's going to be hard to find like they might only get one that they they get to pour out of so once that bottle's gone it's gone you're not seeing it so that would be like that um eh Taylor Warehouse C tornado Survivor so they're only going to get one bottle of that and it's you know so the secondary on that might be you know $800,000 $1,500 or whatever it is and then so if you go in there and they usually have it pretty reasonably priced um go in there you get a pore that might be the only po you get you're never going to see it again dang so that's so when I say allocated that's what what what's like the rarest bourbon is there like I mean that might be a silly question yeah no I mean there's well there's there's tons of them so they've so Buffalo Trace who does all the papy vanwinkle the H tailor they're kind of known for they kind of create their own Rarity they create the scarcity CU they only release x amount of bottles so they've got like a there's a double eagle very rare that they released I think the first one was in 2021 or something um so they only did 200 bottles so they only released 200 bottles and then just this past year I think they did a a double eagle or they did another like a 25 double eagle very rare and so you know that's again same thing it was like 150 or 200 bottles that they released so if you're only releasing 200 bottles I mean that just Cates but again it's a 25y old bourbon yeah so and you they don't you don't just have a million of those laying around yeah so like Indiana might have gotten one of them that's CRA I wonder the whole state got maybe got one of them probably big red cuz they had such they're such a big powerhouse it's fair so it's like but I wonder which big red you sent it to well I'm yeah who knows yeah that's crazy okay so what would you say one of your your top picks of places to get I mean I I love if we're staying Central in Anana I mean I was just again I was just there on Saturday um 1933 again they've got great allocations it does sound like we're say elom I will say this okay I was I can't help it I can't help yeah well at first I mean I I was like a broke college kid not that long ago I didn't have the budget to go there and so now know I have a couple dollars to spend and I'll say like until you actually go and hang out and talk to the people you think they're pretentious oh yeah and I told them that today I was like I was like uh from the outside of the can in you think that it's like super fancy and they just think they're better than you and then you go in and start talking to people and you're like oh you're just you're just people you're so down to earth so nice yeah all the team that works there they're incredible so we this is not just like a let's guess up St ELO but like go in there with an open mind and like I I truly believe like um they get a I wouldn't say a bad rap they just get the like stereotype that they're just very upid and they're not they're very very down tired so I'm so specifically the north side one um so the up in up in Fishers so prime rib sandwich all day long oh hering dis no no no no I'm talking the the 1933 Lounge oh the 1933 up by in Fishers by up in Fishers um so I always I start with FL sliders always and I'll get the prime rib sandwich and I dip it in that uh The Slammer sauce and then I drink I don't know five or six bourbons and then I'm I'm set yeah right what what more do you need but they've got they you know they usually they they get they have a good allocation list I mean I think I drank five Bourbons or so on Saturday that were all allocated that's where I tried the birthday bourbon tried the new Bookers you know had had a few others that were really really good um and the atmosphere is cool it's right out they've got the back patio area and I will say like these might be bourbon bars but like all these places too like even if you don't want to just necessarily drink just straight bourbon like there's usually if there's good bourbon there's usually good cocktails oh yeah and so my next I have have a good pick that is I at least I think it's a good pick which is so Random mhm and it's uh is it called uh Wise Guys like the the spot behind I was literally thinking the behind Good Fellas the the little Speak Easy behind Good Fellas and it's like this is just like kind of like drunk Pizza like to me goodells is like you know but then the the drinks are so fancy back there and it's funny I was literally I was talking to a client yesterday and I was like Yeah The Wise Guys Lounge um he was like what's that and I was like and good Fells and he goes you mean the pizza joint he was I was like yeah it's like behind he goes yeah that's like a pizza joint and I go no you got to go back behind yeah it's phenomenal check it out back there yeah and there's uh man I'm spacing on the guy's name now but there's a bartender back there and he's just so fun to watch cuz and they're like smoking the drinks and stuff too they're do so much and there's and there's always like wedding parties or like me and my girlfriend we'll go and we'll just sit at the bar and you know we'll do the uh the what's the the peanut butter tequila shots oh peanut butter tequila well we're going to we're going to have to go and I'm going to introduce you peanut butter and tequila shot it's fantastic but so we'll do a couple of those and I'll get a couple bourbons and we just watch and it usually goes in waves so there's like a wedding party or a bachelorette party or something so it'll be like 10 people that roll in Cocktails so they're making the cocktails they're making the making the drinks smoking they're doing all this other stuff and then you know getting them out and the people go out and then you know next half an hour they kind of flush out and then you know the next group of people next wave oh it's so much fun but yeah they've got um one of the reasons why that's such a good bar too talking about allocations cuz they've got all these stores in Kentucky and um all around yeah like were they found it in Louisville I I believe Louisville or Lexington Lexington so they've got the they've got a couple stores there so they can use that power to kind of bring those allocations here so they've got I mean if if you know they've got all the papy band Winkles they've got all the wellers they've got basically anything that's allocated and they're bringing it here which is really fun so if you want to go out and have a good time and you don't mind spending a little bit of money um I mean you can have a fantastic time there where uh where else would you say I tell you what man um Oakmont oh big fan of the Oakmont so I was in there actually last last weekend um last weekend went in Friday just had a had a couple nice pores just sat at the bar um sometimes I'll just sit there by myself and just kind of see what they get in um once you kind of get in the game you kind of know when the when the drops are coming so you know what what restaurants get what you're on the inside you know when the truck comes you can kind of position yourself and say hey what do you got in the back there I know what you got so um you can kind of do that and have a few nice pores they've got some really good burgers really good food so yeah the O It's and again good cocktails well great cocktails okay I love that if you're not drinking bourbon what are you drinking barke Voda I should put that plug out there um no um if I'm not drinking bourbon um water you know I i' do you get like a specific cocktail or a beer guy I'm I'm hard it's hard for me to drink beer I'm like a one andone on beer um I mean it just reminds me of college but I I I have one and it just it bloats me like I can't I can't do the carbonation um it's funny funny though cuz I judge the devour cocktail contest every year so but it's a lot of fun cuz it's I'm a I'm a very good um Source like I'm not biased in any way either you like it or I don't so yeah I don't know it's it's hard with the there's there was some vodkin tequila cocktails that I really liked I mean if I if I like a good espresso Martini those things just three beans come on yeah I guess okay those aren't too bad yeah I mean I'm not going to say no those get the job done uh I have a good bourbon bar uh up on the North side I think actually in Caramel um yeah the Broken Barrel cocktail bar they've got a B bunch of good uh good drinks in there I mean a huge selection like it's a crazy crazy cool selection I'm going to say Union 50 if we're going my next again again these are all these are all places I've been within the past two weeks so I'll go I'll go yeah Union 50s is like I mean I've never been but I've heard good things oh man you got to go it's it's they've got this massive Long Long Bar and it's I always like to go there and I just kind of look up and I'm like what do you guys have cuz they always have something that I'm not expecting um which is always fun what was there this past time they had um they had a couple Willet purple tops um so that means but it sounds good yeah it's h it's like these eight ninee Willets um and then they had a couple single barrels um yeah pretty reasonably price too so I had some responsible amounts of those yeah responsible amount exactly um okay we have four left four left okay there's four left on our list one that I really like uh I've only been there once I didn't have bourbon but I did have a good espresso Martini there was Turners that's up at the what's it called the studs yeah I have yet to been there be there but I had a really good cocktail during the cocktail contest from Turners I forget what it was but I remember it was really mean there espresso martinis there were fire I was a big fan and I think they're a um uh SS I think they're are SS rest okay I'm pretty sure speaking of ss we're just going to carry this right into a half liter in Broad rle half Leader's got a bourbon selection half leader has an insane bourbon selection really insane Urban selection they just had the eh Taylor Barrel prooof Rye drop uh I think it was it might have been this week um so again super maybe it was last I love that you're in on they like they half liters got the drop yeah they've got the drop so they've got um they always have a really good um so there's a Buffalo Trace antique collection from Buffalo Trace you know it's like it's again it's all these you thousand plus bottles um so I went there for a Christmas party it was like last November and they they had them all out and they they weren't supposed to release them yet but they had them and I was like you guys are open all those cuz I'm going to I'm going to drink them all yeah yeah yeah um so I I think I was in there like the day before they were supposed to do it or something but it was so it's fantastic so that's that's always that's like a sleeper too cuz everyone goes in there and it's like and there's always a bunch of like kids running around on the outside like in the summertime and you expect some German like some big beer yeah they've got they've got a ton of beer but it's like I mean I go there for the bourbon it's it's a wild it's a crazy good again they they've got the good they've got the good connection from s so they've got all these it's it's these big restaurant groups I think that can pull together nothing like bourbon andcue I mean there's one that I mean I don't know cuz I'm not a member but I had stepen mshan and he talked about the benberg oh yeah and that's right there on is it College it's on um Park it's on yeah it's it's like Park and between massav and there's another little side street there yeah but it's like a private club that's like one yeah one of those like little members like you have you been in there yeah you walk by it and you really don't know are you a I'm not oh I've got friends that are members and you were in there pretty good selection yeah yeah they've got a really good again they've got a lot of those Willets they've got um again I think I think Cunningham could they've got enough power I think they could get a lot of really good Bourbons I just don't think they is it by Cunningham it's yeah it's a Cunningham um it's a Cunningham I don't know if a restaurant or it's not really restaurant proper yeah it's a Cunningham property so do they have food there is it just it's like it's like little apps and stuff like that so little T well if anyone has a private club and want to let me hang out with them sometime I think we can we can probably yeah I mean if if anyone from a private club wants to let Nate drink some bourbon let me know what do you got I went to agave and Rye oh I had these killer tacos I don't know what I've been there we'd had a few I think I had tequila so we had a few and me and my girlfriend were like at this point we were like hey feed us we want good food and so he's like I got you so I don't I don't know what he brought us out it was three of the most amazing tacos I've ever had but they had again talking about allocations they just had really crazy allocations nice bottles really really good pricing and so we just sat there and drank just enough yeah you Dr a very responsible just just enough I love that uh the one place that I've been meaning to get that I know you put on the list um that I want to talk I think we'll round this out with our our 10th it's not number 10 I don't believe but you know no no parent order uh commission row have you been in there I still haven't dude I haven't either but lots of people that I've talked to said like this is a place to get a really nice [ __ ] before P game cuz they've got the uh what's the bar in the basement called it's the so it's MES Lounge wow Melvin Simon co-founded the largest shopping mall company in the United States a Simon Property Group so yeah yeah because they have like three commission row mels and then an event center on the top I'm pretty sure so I think it's like three things which is pretty that might be a cool spot to like that'd be a really cool spot to go like and have like a big event there that'd be dope yeah um yeah that's on the list go check out this Pacer season for sure um those those were pretty 10 pretty sweet spots I would say I think half lader was the biggest surprise to me right so you had 1933 Oakmont Turners The Exchange Wise Guys commission row Union 50 half leader agave and Ry the benberg it's members only unless they want to let me in and then Wolfie's uh with Broken Barrel up on the North side yeah those are 10 great spots to to grab a beverage uh we are winding up we we kept to a tight hour this time which I'm impressed with last time we we went dangerously dangerously um I will say we've come to the younger year segment so I'm going to give you all the usual questions that we normally have so this question is brought to you by our friends at or Fellowship they are a great organization here in Indiana helping develop young Business Leaders across the state Dan what advice would you give to your 22-year-old self start taking milk thistle every time you drink so listen out here boys and girls all you college kids uh milk thistle is fantastic for your liver it helps your liver enzymes it helps you break down all the excess alcohol that you drink um it's going to keep you healthy it's going to keep you strong um what a great milk milk thistle milk thisle I wish I would have started taking it in you early in my I have I've got some in my truck I might need I might need to try some of that what so what what does it do what does it help with it's it's just it's just like a um it's just like a it helps your liver it's like a um kind of like a Tums but for alcohol I wouldn't say it's necessary for alcohol but um now if you do have like any like Ragweed poisoning cuz it's like a weed um you know you want to be careful taking it but I mean you can buy it at CVS or Amazon or anywhere you know it's like yeah 20 bucks for a little bottle and do you take it the night like you take tonight yeah typically anytime I drink I try and take it I keep it by my night stint so it's like every night I try and take it so every day so he takes so every day I take it every day suppl that's that's a good answer man I love that we do have a fun this is coming to my surprise yeah you ready for this I'm ready for it so we have uh I met these guys uh maybe a month or two ago and I'm excited to share this this is jnt's good time bevco and they have the bourbon smash so this is a bottled cocktail mm that we're going to try it's a b it's their bourbon smash so crafted with bourbon whiskey orange juice and agave nectar and this is like I mean it's the same thing so you think of like uh ready to drink Bev but it's not in a can it's not a Seltzer and it's not low ABV right so this thing I mean what is the ABV on that 20% alcohol by volume so it's a 40 proof 40 um that sweetness definitely comes right through it's good finish no I I like it um they're they're a good friend of ours I mean they're at I mean we I had it at Union Jacks or at fat Dan izos oh my gosh they sent me like there's like 10 places follow him on Instagram at Goodtime Bev I was not even paid for this promotion they're just a startup Bev company that I'm trying to help out I like that I like it's sometimes it's just about the guys being just super nice which again you know talk to my talk to any of these any of these guys any of these these local distillers and you know it's it's the people that make it you know they've got again they've got good products that speak for themselves but if the people are nice then that's you should go for that's what I think I love that two questions left for you Dan yeah uh what's something the world needs to know about Indiana we have so many Fantastic restaurants and and I know I know like I I see a lot of food focused um from the from the people that do the you know what's the you know what's what's the hidden Jam a lot of it's food focused and I think I think we just have so many good food restaurants you know food places here I think that needs to be one of our our main focuses you know everything from you know a lot of those Cunningham restaurants to Tinker Street to just you know like Blue Beard and stuff like that there's so many there's so many really good chefs out there that are are putting out just super quality hey man super quality I think Indies got a good food seat especially if you love a good BK tender wine no that's like one end of the spectrum that's what we need me you give me some pork tendel and I'll I'll drink whiskey all day with that Amen to that and the final question for you Dan what is a Hidden Gem in Indiana oo I'm going to say la pada okay I don't know this place got shrimp chimmy ch is as big as your head it's out east a little bit it's on Arsenal and New York you walk in it's always busy going on a Friday night it's always busy they've got some of the best shrimp chimy chongas in town okay laara if anyone know for some reason these like Hidden Gem Mexican restaurants
