WHAT’S HIDING IN MARENGO INDIANA?
This is the definition of a small town. Marengo has a population of 859 people and a total area of 0.77 square miles. Blink and you might miss it. Though the town is small it still has a claim to fame.
MARENGO CAVE
Marengo Cave is one of only four show caves in Indiana. Public tours of the cave have been given since 1883. The cave was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1984.
Marengo Cave is open all year long and offers two different walking tours. The Dripstone Trail t covers 1 mile of the cave and takes around an hour to complete. The Crystal Palace tour takes 40 minutes to complete and covers one-third mile of the cave.
MARENGO TAVERN
If you’re heading to southern Indiana to visit the caves, you have to stop in and eat at the Marengo Tavern. Don’t let its humble facade fool you; this is Marengo’s true hidden gem. It is rumored they make a mean pork tenderloin. Hoosiers know a good tenderloin is worth stopping for. This is the town's local dive with tavern-style food and a full beer and cocktail menu. Marengo Tavern seems like a place where the waitress calls you by your first name and knows your order before you sit down and that’s true Hoosier hospitality.
SMALL TOWN USA
The town of Marengo is the perfect reminder that no matter how small the dot on the map, every place has something to stop for if you are willing to look. You may find the best tenderloin in Indiana, a local business owner who has that perfect thing you’ve been looking for, or beautiful natural landmarks that often get overlooked.
